Here it is, the personal part of my FMP! I think one of my more successful matte paintings bar some technical issues which will be fixed :)Ā
And here it is! I start my new job in Bristol @ nineteen-twenty on Monday! So I have 2 days off and Iām straight into a 6 month contract as a junior compositor. I am SO excited as I loved the studio, the people and of course the work they do.Ā I did not expect to walk out of uni with a job when I was in second year but I am pleasantly surprised! I plan on sticking around nineteen-twenty for a while, learn more comp stuff, get some money together and travel! I have worked really hard over the past 3 years and Iām hoping to see a bit more of the world next year.
I plan on practicing more traditional art now that I will have my own time in the evenings :) I think I need to take a step back and really concentrate on the fundamentals of colour and light, I wanāt to be a better matte painter and I know I have the technical skill, now I need to push the artistic skill. I will go to London eventually, but iām really happy to stick around here for a bit and just chill out for a while. Iām not ready for fast - paced London just yet.Ā
University actually got me a job yay! And it wouldnāt have been possible without the passion and patience of my tutors. Yous are the best!Ā
Evaluation
What a CRAZY 3 years it has been. I donāt really know where to begin. First of all thanks to Jase, Rosie, Chris, Rodger, Kris, Geraint, Omm and all the other teachers and guest teachers to grace us with their presence! Thanks to you all, I have a job and the beginning of my career!Ā
Itās been a bit of a roller coaster of an FMP for me. Iām really happy with the Best of Brecon Collab! I was on board since they started filming and spent a lot of my time and that and helping out the guys, and I was happy to :) Itās such a cool project and Iām so glad I got to track and comp on it and work with such talented people :DĀ
I believe the FMP is supposed to showcase your best work, I feel like my environment doesnāt really do that, but I was more concerned with working in Bait most of the time. I honestly learned SO much there and did a lot of my best work while there. I think that has been the main learning experience for me this year. I got to comp on 2 TV show (Born to Kill and Casualty) and work on a music video (High Contrast - Questions) it was an immense experience and I really have to thank Lucy, Peter, Christian and the gang for having faith in me and for letting me stick around for so long! They all taught me a lot as well as my tutors! I spent January - April in Bait and it was the most fun I ever had working. I loved every moment of it! Even the mega stressful ones.Ā
I feel like I have slacked on my personal FMP, It was just hard coming from full time work, 9 - 6 to work more on nuke when I got home. I feel like my creative juices were drained during the work hours as compositing involves SO much problem solving. And in all Honesty, my interests changed the more I worked. I LOVE environments so much but I am REALLY enjoying compositing. I just love the feeling I get when I finally figure out a problem or a way around it and it made me explore Nuke way more. I know that this isnāt an excuse for slacking on my FMP but I just feel like I kind of switched around. In reality I was working 40 + hours a week as a compositor so I did get what I wanted out of this term at the end of the day. I still do want to be a matte painter but I want to start in comp because I feel like it will really push my problem solving skills as well as keep training myĀ ārealistic eyeāĀ
I am happy with my choice to work at Bait even though it has effected my FMP.Ā
What I am missing in my FMP is some live action, I would like some green screen in there! I also want to add lighting interaction and atmosphere which I am hoping to get around to before the end of year show. The projection works fairly well and iām happy with that but it is lifeless for now.
What I did learn, more 3D!! yay, I am feeling so comfortable with maya now. At the start of the year it was still pretty alien to me but I am really working my way through it now. I learned a whole new renderer during this project, lovely, lovely Arnold. It is so awesome! The mesh light is just the best!Ā
So overall I am really happy with what I have learned while working in the industry and Iām also quite happy with my 3D progress. I have worked on and off since second year and itās just crazy to think I have this experience and University is just over now. Iām gonna miss everyone a lot :( I know they will go and do amazing things and that we will be friends for life!! And iām sure I will run into everyone again at some point! Itās a small world :DĀ
I will continue this post on the next page.Ā
PASS is : abrakadabra
YAY the comp is done. there is a little issue in this version where the small dino runs through a patch on its legs but itās fixed for the final edit :)Ā
I really love your dino feeet!
So here is my comp for beast of brecons, it involved mostly painting grass over 3 of the dinos feet as the run across the hill. And also 400 frames of rotoing billy haha.Ā
It involved a LOT of roto paint nodes and the other dinos kept stepping in other patches for the other dinos and it got so confusing but more roto and some slight opacity keyframes made it possible :) It was a fun shot and it was quite challenging as iād never done something similar in comp. I tried a few different ways including projectiong grass and merging images over the top but painting it strand by strand was the most realistic way! Canāt wait to see the final film tomorrow :DĀ
I didnāt use nuke for my projection this time around, I wanted to try it out in Maya. I got it working but I find I have much more freedom in Nuke and I will stick with Nuke for projections for sure. But I really wanted to challenge myself in terms of 3D and I like to think I achieved that. I learned how to use Arnold which is a new render to me
This was the shoot day for Beasts of Brecon. I was on location to help with tracking and setting up C-stands for each shot that needed them. I tracked 5 of the 8 Shots and exported the .fbx data in order for it to be used by layout. I spent a week tracking these shots. It was a lot of fun filming on set and I learned a lot about filming on location.
For one of my main tracking shots, which was a pan up, we set up 2 tall c stands. These are the only trackable points as the background at this point is just sky. I noticed when I was tracking that the Cstands where shaking in the wind which came out in the camera track, I didnāt notice this on set at the time so it is something I will keep an eye on in the future. The track came out fine in the end as the dinosaurs being tracked are flying and it actually makes sense for them to wobble around a bit
My comp on the Beast of Brecon project. This is not the final version but a test for painting the grass back over the feet of the dinos to make it look like they are really in the environment
Finished matte painting :) Quite happy with it in terms of the colour and composition etc... I wish I had more time to comp some lights in after the camera move
3D Progress, trying out some different lighting techniques. Most of the detailing will happen when i start to texture :)
Building assets for my 3D sceneĀ
A quick photobash I did of my scene to get an idea of where the buildings will go! Going to model this in 3D and then begin to paint on top of the rendered 3D image after I sort out my lighting.Ā
Here are some photos of urban england that i took some inspiration from for my main building that will be a shady strip cluib!Ā
The idea for my environment is mixing a bit of Hong Kong with normal georgian architecture. I looked a t bunch of stock photos I had in order to build reference and to also model assets using the images Ā
Undercity environment
So the environment iām currently working on is for my āUndercityā Story. Iām building a part of the under city in 3D and I am going to use a mix of projection mapping / 2.5D matte painting and then texture painting using photoshop / Mari for some of the more important / closer elements.
I looked up a bunch of different types of architecture to try and pinpoint what sort of buildings I wanāt in my scene. Ā
Heres a few different types I studied.Ā
I wanted my city to be a mix of brutalist architecture and Georgian. So kind of a mix between London and Hongkong. I looked into LA also as a lot of blade runner was shot there and I took some influence from that too!Ā
The TV show I got to comp on while working at Bait! Such a cool experience and actually quite stressful at times. The turnovers where fast! I had a pleasure working on it though and some of the shots the senior guys did were amazing! I learned so much on my last comp shot for this. Definitely the hardest shot I worked on while at Bait.Ā
UPDATES
So ivāe finished up my job at Bait! I somehow managed to go from doing roto and prep on a high contrast music video to clean up and roto on casualty and I spent my last 3 weeks actually comping on Born to Kill! :D
The first episode aired on Thursday. My work is throughout episodes 3 and 4 which will air in May.Ā
So on top of working at Bait I have been comping for Kierans project and building my own environment. Updates on those to follow!Ā
