BACKSTORY !
as an only child and having a rocky relationship with both of her parents, mariana constantly felt alone and secluded. if and when asked who raised her, she gives all the credit to her grandmother. her grandmother was always the one to look after her, care for her, and was always her biggest supporter and number one fan. life wasnβt too bad with her abuela around, but then of course her grandmother moved to california when she was 10 years old. but even with the distance, her grandmother became her biggest inspiration. she was strong, confident, ambitious, hard working, and truly beautiful. she embodied everything that mariana stood for and aspired to be, and she helped to mold mari into the woman she is today.Β
since then, it was every man, woman, and child for themselves. her parents, a hair stylist and a mechanic, drowned themselves in their work. her mother was always timid, a woman that never understood her true worth, one who always allowed men to claim her value and shit on her. mariana witnessed a lot of abuse towards her mother, and suffered from emotional and verbal abuse herself. it was safe to say their marriage was anything but healthy, causing them both to dedicate all of their time and energy to their work, and mariana was pretty much left on the back burner.Β
things only got more complicated when mariana came out to her parents at the age of 15, which is when she decided to begin her transition. while her mom attempted to be supportive, her father basically disowned her, and became even more verbally and emotionally abusive. between him and the cruel world of high school, she just couldnβt catch a break.Β
she began working from the young age of 14, working underground jobs and getting paid under the table to avoid the shitty child labor laws that always held her back. she also did small jobs like shoveling the neighbors drive way, cut the grass, walk dogs, etc. she had always been hard working. finally, when she was just 16 years old, she looked into getting emancipated and began the process. it wasnβt much of a fight, really. her father didnβt want her around, and her mother was too scared of him to fight for her. she craved to get a new start, to get away from the abuse and childhood trauma that she had faced...so right after everything went through with the court proceedings, she packed up a small suitcase and flew out to california to live with her grandmother. and of course, she was accepted with open arms; being loved and supported for who she truly was by the elderly woman.
as she got old, mariβs grandmother began growing more and more ill. she was diagnosed dementia and early alzheimer's before marianaβs arrival, but continued to work to help with the financial burden that came with mariβs transition (at least, she worked as much as she could). because of this mari never finished high school, instead working 70+ hours a week in order to support both herself and her grandmother and obtaining her GED at the age of 17. she completed her transition by the age of 19, which was the same age she unfortunately had to put her grandmother into a locked dementia facility due to how her disease had begin to progress. mariana officially became her health care proxy and her conservator...and this broke her heart. she makes it a point to visit her at least twice a week, and she makes sure that the woman gets the best care.
mariana decided to go back to school for political science and womens studies at the age of 20. but with having to pay for school, her grandmothers care and facility, and just her wanting to live a lavish lifestyle, she realized she needed quick money...and quite frankly, she was growing tired of working like a dog. so, she got into the escorting business. she was beautiful, confident, and had a wonderful personality - so it wasnβt really hard for her to thrive. once she realized that, she never even thought about looking back.Β
now sheβs thriving at egu!! sheβs living her truth and is looking to go into law after graduation.Β Β

It was not a far off assumption to assume that Iris hated parties. More so, she quickly found out she despised frat and sorority parties even more. But she was on a mission to make friends, get out there, become more than the girl that people saw in classes, but never enjoying campus life.
