"I’mma just take a sip okay?"
I am amazed by someone who recites the Qur’an and does not know its explanation. How can such a person find any enjoyment in his recitation?

February 1995 in a youth hostel in Venice.
Wherein my Modern Orthodox high school Jewish history teacher walked into class one day and asked thirty 15-year-old girls how they felt about taking a trip to Italy. A few weeks later, we were on the plane. Nothing like this had ever happened at our school before and nothing like it ever happened again.
As we moved from Rome to Venice to Florence, my teenage brain was on overload trying to process everything, straining to remember all the details, to take them home with me, integrate them into my understanding of life.
Strictly kosher observant, we spent the week eating tuna out of cans, granola bars, and crackers with peanut butter. In Italy. A travesty, yes, but it made for an act of rebellion that has become one of my favorite high school memories.
That is, in Florence, where we were given an hour to wander by ourselves, my friend Debbie and I, our arms linked, meandered through the cobblestone alleyways, slipped into a Very Forbidden Bakery, and bought something with our few remaining lira. I don’t remember what the pastry was, but I remember the experience of sitting on a staircase and eating it as one of the happiest, and most delicious, moments of my adolescence.
In Florence, in friendship, in sculptures and cobblestones and history, in rebellion, there was future.

I loved Living Single so much. I regularly talk about it at least once a week now, as if it’s a new show. I rewatched the entire thing a couple of years ago. ❤
