Publication final work - Part 2 (6/12)
By Jordan Gogos, Claudia Tuckwell and Michelle Nguyen.
Publication - Final (6/12)
Above is the final publication of our creative work. A collation of photography, text, models, sketches, drawings, programs, and reference.
The work embodies human production towards the future as a form of destruction. Our work is a dystopia of production.
Let us know what you think!
By Claudia Tuckwell, Jordan Gogos and Michelle Nguyen - group #TNG
Publication process - text
To produce the text, we used a variety of text scramblers.
Publication process - photo-shopping/ manipulating
The sketches were heavily manipulated through photoshop and inDesign.
Publication process - photographing models
Using a casio QV-300 digital camera, we captured the models blurred, dis-functional, futuristic.
Publication process - white charcoal/ acrylic pen (Michelle)
Some more of the orignal sketches/drawings i did for the group assessment before @cofa1002dude @cloudcofa1002 editied it through photoshops
Publication process - sketches (Jordan)
Sketches of models of production. Dystopia. These sketches were reworked through multiple processes of editing.
Publication process- models The orignal models (various materials) of production. These models were later edited and revoked through multiple process of editing. @cofa1002dude @cloudcofa1002
Week 12- teaching For the studio activity, i try to teach my classmates how to use polymer clay and make roses
Tips for Assessment 3
Hi all!
Hopefully you’re well on way to producing a great PDF publication for your group work. Below are some tips in case you need a little direction, or to help you as you engage your ideas.
/ This assessment asks you to make a publication. Think of it as an art/design magazine, the kind you’d see at a book fair or market or event or exhibition. Imagine finding a 12-page magazine that takes one cool idea and explores it from an art/design perspective. Think of it like the kind of object you’d want to download, print off, stick to your wall.
/ You are asked to use the 2015 Venice Biennale’s curatorial theme as your inspiration. This does NOT mean that the assessment asks you to write a report on the Venice Biennale. Think of it like a contribution to the exhibition. Ross put it really nicely – imagine the curator of the Biennale has asked you to send something for inclusion in the exhibition. You can make whatever you like, but it has to consider the theme of ‘All tomorrow’s futures’ in some way – maybe by talking about innovation, or apocalypse, or utopia, or dystopia, or tomorrow, or today, or time, or technology.
/ Like with every assessment in this course, this publication is a work of art and a designed object. So think about everything that you do – how you use space, image, text, form. This is not an essay; it’s a studio work that happens to be a publication. Think about what some of the possibilities are in terms of contemporary publishing – the integration of media in PDFs, the use of zooming in and out of digital files, the layering of data, the use of scanned material objects, the use of text and typography. The sky’s the limit!
Clare has helpfully posted instructions on how to submit the file via Moodle. Make sure you read them and follow them exactly. Good luck!
Thanks for the tips!

Week 10 - collaboration
Assessment 3 tips
Great to see that groups are starting to work out how they will deal with the format of the pdf and there are some excellent ideas (not all confirmed) so far including:
1. CONCEPT: A design for a futuristic machine that implements Artificial Intelligence. PDF: A manual for the machine including troubleshooting for glitches. INSPIRATION: Escher, Giger, P. Beyls, the film ex_machina, Stelarc, Hito Steyerl, Shaun Tan…
2. CONCEPT: A plan for a futuristic Utopian and environmentally friendly UNSW Art & Design campus. PDF: A proposal for what the new campus will look like including architectural models. INSPIRATION: frank lloyd wright, bladerunner, patrick blanc…
3. CONCEPT: A futuristic vision of what rebellions will look like in the future as our world becomes increasingly controlled by corporations. PDF: A mockup of a website/portal giving access to small e-activist groups. INSPIRATION: hito steyerl, futurefarmers…
4. CONCEPT: A futuristic vision of a world with increasing amounts of refugees due to climate change, war and dwindling resources. PDF: An advertising/photographic campaign that helps those in wealthy countries identify with and welcome refugees. INSPIRATION: melissa zexter, cheyenne randall, vanessa baird…
5. CONCEPT: A futuristic vision of dystopia. PDF: A fictional graphic story that combines illustration and text. INSPIRATION: Moebius, 2000 AD, Harvey Pekar, Philippe Druillet…

Concept Statement:
The challenge to define and categorise of what is the “human” is always altering and challenged regularly. With the evolution of technology and various influences such as social-cultural influences, the “human” is constantly building itself to fit within the standardised norm and forging relationships with other humans and different ecologies around them. Nature and humans have been co-existing each other for an extended period. However, the relationship between the two doesn't exactly live in harmony. The imbalance in the relationship between human and the natural world reflects on the human act and carelessness of over-exploiting the natural resources of our environment.
My approach towards the second assessment is to create a series of sculptures that reflect human activities on the environment. To show the relationships between “human” and natural, I decided to manipulate various parts of the human body to resemble branches and other natural aesthetics. Throughout my research, Kate MacDowell nature and human sculptures became my main source of inspiration as the artist concept was to examine the romantic relationships between the natural world the impact of the contemporary human society. In the works, MacDowell embedded human causing effects on nature such as climate change, toxic pollution gm crops and environmental impacts caused by humans in various body parts such as ears, lungs, hands and feet. Another artist I came across during my research is Guillermo Guardia, where I was intrigued by his “puzzled human sculptures.” From seeing the puzzle clay humans, I reflected on how the puzzles can be used in my major works, with the puzzle representing evolving and connections. I also like the idea of the puzzle pieces as reflects my concept I developed in my first assessment of how the “human” is constantly evolving and “elements of a human”.
All three sculptures in my body of work are made from polymer clay in which I purposely chose the colour beige as it was similar to human skin. My concept is reform the human physique to convey the negative impact on the environment as well as metaphorically showing human values through nature. The puzzle pieces in my works have of cravings of categories in which humans can be sorted. The puzzle is meant to represent building and breaking down of these categories of “the making of a human” as well as relationships.
In my first work, I like to call it “deforestation of the human”. The reason I decided to capture deforestation / cutting down of trees is that it reflects on of the harmful relationships that human imposed on the environment. I decided to capture deforestation in the human form (by breaking branch like limbs and removed head from body) to reflect the negative relationships between humans and nature and metaphorically convey that the “human” is constantly changing and being built. The puzzle pieces are a feature throughout all the works to represent human values / categories that define the human, where the puzzle represent “connections, relationships, and building and removing”.
The second sculpture in the body of work is made to resemble a pot-plant in the form of the human hand, The fingers resemble branches that are wrap with leaves. The pot is made of puzzle pieces of different categories the “human” are sorted. The concept of this piece was to represent that like plants, humans need to be looked after in order to grow and developed in order to survive as well as metaphorically showing the relationship that we “humans” have with nature is determined by our actions that are represented by the hand.
My last piece, I created a sculpture of the human footprint that is wrap in vines and leaves representing nature as well as a deformed sunflower. The reason behind my choice was that I wanted to capture the human activities and it effect on the environment in which is plant mutation in this artwork. I chose the “foot” to represent the “human footprint” / actions that we have on the environment. I kept the element of the puzzle pieces which are displayed in my other works to represent the “connection” of human conscious and the natural world. To create the deformed flower, I researched various plants mutations and found that the sunflower most pleasing. The deformed flower was a result from radiation from the Fukushima.
To show the relationship between humans and the environment through merging the natural environment and the human physique. Through viewing my work, I hope the audience take a chance to re-evaluate our influences upon the environment and the similarities in how we treat another human or ourselves can have the same effect as the environment.
