The hollow grunted a laugh, far from offended. If anything, the reminder that the shinigami wasnât making efforts to stay on his good side was amusing, fun even. âYeah, weird, that. But maybe you should be. You never know when a powerful hollow might come in handy, but I only do favors for free when itâs for a friend.â
âThatâs the spirit.â He said, cheerfully enough and with a laugh, if only because the pun was utterly hilarious to him. Likely himself. Hah. He didnât miss that, but chose not to comment. He was fairly certain this shinigami, one of the ones Ichigo called friend, had seen Ichigo use the hollow powers that heâd given to Ichigo. Those abilities were all the stronger now that they were undiluted, with no shinigami filter to go through first. But his confidence was sure enough that he felt no need to say as much.Â
He shrugged, eyes drifting towards the motions of Renjiâs hands. It seemed heâd struck a nerve with that. âThatâs true enough; we all change. Hollows evolve, shinigami learn. The difference, I think, is that itâs only a war from your side. Hollows donât even have a side. Most of us donât like each other any more than we like shinigami. Thereâs exceptions, like you and me sittinâ here talkinâ, but, well, you saw what happened to the last hollow army; didnât last long. So youâll have to forgive me, but your armies must be blind to think thereâs a war. At least against hollows.â He shrugged again, head tilting slightly as he looked out across the lawn at nothing in particular, âMaybe thatâll change too, but I suspect not. Or not in our existence, at least.â
Pale brows arched at the clarification. âPunishment duty.â He repeated dryly, not liking the taste it left in his mouth. The twist of his lips was as much a sneer as a grin as he met the look being thrown his way. âThe second sounds better; leave you here to rot. Sounds like freedom granted, if you ask me. No more rigid marching and drills, or whatever it is they have you do durinâ down time for this war theyâre pretending to have.â That crack of thunder actually got a flinch from him, and he shifts where heâs sitting, crossing his arms in an effort to disguise the slight jolt of his shoulders. His mouth was drawn into a controlled line, though, the smirk gone. But if the shinigami wasnât in a hurry to get somewhere that would stay dry, he wasnât about to suggest it and let his discomfort show so obviously.
âI donât use my friends like that. If I needed help I would ask it not as a favor but as a friend. There would be no bartering or trading of favors, no I owe you or anything. There would be a promise that I would be there for my friend no matter what was to come if they chose to help me or not.â Renji didnât like the whole caste system in the seritie and wouldnât allow it to be here in the human would like that. Impressing each other to gain favor and rise in ranks. Here it was about respect and prowess.Â
Renji had no idea what was going through the Hollows mind and wouldnât dare to try and guess. It was likely that he would be wrong so he accepted the amusement as it was, just amusement.
âThatâs what gets to me the most,â The admittance burned in his throat. Because what he was about to agree with meant everything heâd been taught, everything heâd grown for, had been a lie. And it was. âThere is no war. They made us soldiers and tossed us into a battle and let us continue as fodder against an enemy that isnât. Hollows are weak and they canât band together,â He meant the large faceless ones, not ones like Shiro- the ones with brains. âits within that the real enemies are and we are always blind to it because we are made to think the world is black and white.âÂ
Looking at Shiro he snorted. Because there was irony in this. Black and white- hah! âWe are good you are bad and thatâs that. But it was Aizen that caused Hollows to evolve, one of our own, and the Quincies waged a war because of our predecessors murdering them. If any thing, Hollows are the least of our true worries. And those higher than us are working to blind us.â
Pinching his brow he heaved a sigh. This was talking in circles at this point and he was gaining a headache from it. âIt wouldnât be so bad to being here, free as youâve said, but Iâve lost everything in that case. My friends, my rank- what I fought and bled to gain-, everything that had been important is now gone. I have no home anymore.â Thatâs what heâd truly lost. Seeing the flinch he knew something about the weather was bothering the Hollow so he stood up and stretched.Â
Having no clue if it was the thunder, the threat of lightening, or if Shiro was just very cat like and didnât like the wet- hell maybe he was like a chalk painting and might melt away- Renji would ahve to make it seem like he cared. Even if being in the rain was the most peaceful he ever felt anymore. He felt like he could just hide in the downpour and no one would see who he was pretending to be. âLetâs head somewhere. Itâs fairly uncomfortable when a uniform gets soaked and you gain the weight of an extra body clinging to you.â Not that he was too weak to move just as easily, it was just a decent lie to save everyone from humility most times.
âEr- I donât really know anywhere to go though. Do you?â
