5 Top Tips for caring for Bleach Blonde Hair
If you’re like me and you’ve chosen the high-maintenance yet fabulous hair colour that is bleach blonde, you’re probably sick and tired of people telling you how it’s all going to fall out and will never grow a millimetre again.
I’m here to tell you that that isn’t strictly true — I mean, it could be if you decided you were going to bleach it within an inch of its life while using heat every day without even considering a conditioning mask! But we’re here to discuss how you can enjoy your stunning new colour without having to compromise on condition!
Here are my top 5 tips, along with product recommendations that will help you keep that luscious colour while maintaining your hair’s quality. For reference, I have been bleach blonde for over 4 years now!
Top 5 tips for maintaining and caring for bleach blonde hair:
1. Minimise heat
I know, I know, you hear it all the time but it’s such an important point. Using heat on your gorgeous blonde hair doesn’t just cause dry and split ends, it is also one of the key culprits turning your colour an unforgivable yellow!
Investing in a quality heat defence spray is crucial, here are a few of my favourites.
Up Market — Kérastase Genesis Defense Thermique Heat Protector
Drug Store — TRESemme Hair Heat Defense Spray
2. Use a Shampoo and Conditioner that suits your hair type
For most of you, you’ll likely want to opt for a shampoo and conditioner duo that is specifically designed for bleached or damaged hair. This will give your hair the nourishment it needs to stay healthy. Personally, I only wash my hair twice a week maximum, but I understand that this isn’t realistic for everyone, so I’d recommend no more than once every two days.
Up Market — Redken Extreme Trio
Drug Store — Noughty ‘To The Rescue’ Shampoo & Noughty ‘ To The Rescue’ Conditioner
3. Masks & Treatments
I would recommend doing a hair mask once per week, any more may cause product build-up, and treatments will depend on the product itself.
Masks:
Noughty ‘To The Rescue’ Intense Moisture Mask
Wella Professionals FusionPlex Intense Repair Mask
Treatments:
Noughty Intensive Care Leave-In Conditioner
Redken Extreme Bleach Recovery Lamellar Water
Redken Extreme Anti-Snap
4. Toners & Silver Shampoos
Now, let me be very clear, toners and silver shampoos do not lighten your hair, and they don’t bleach your hair. Instead, they work by cancelling out the yellow brassy tones that develop a few weeks or months after having your hair bleached. While they don’t bleach your hair, they can still be very drying so I would advise using a hair mask or treatment after, or alternatively, I’ll link some ‘silver’ conditioning masks below too.
Toners
BLEACH London White Toner Kit
Wella Professionals Color Fresh Semi-Permanent Colour — Light Pearl Ash Blonde
Silver Shampoos
Aussie Blonde Silver Hydration Shampoo
BLEACH London Silver Shampoo
Silver Conditioning Masks
Wella Professionals Color Fresh Semi-Permanent Colour Mask — Pearl Blonde
Redken Color Extend Blondage Express Anti-Brass Mask
L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Blondifier Mask
5. Get regular trims
I’m not saying go and chop 4 inches off of your hair every 4–6 weeks, but it’s really important to stay on top of split ends and breakage. I tend to cut off noticeable split ends every 4–6 weeks and go for a ‘proper’ cut once or twice a year.
And, that’s all folks. I hope this helps, if you have any questions or if you would like me to cover this topic further, drop a note in the comments.
