The Light Between Oceans

Let’s now talk about The Light Between Oceans (2016).

The movie was released in Venice (my hometown) during the Venice Film Festival and it was an absolutely success.

This movie is about love, of course and big big big dramas…I don’t want to spoiler too much eheh.

So Tom (Fassbender) works as a lightkeeper in a isolated isle with his wife Isabel (Alicia). 

Things get hard when Isabel loses two pregnancies; the couple is frustrated and depressed until a newborn baby girl comes into their lives.

Since then the family have to face with reality, truth and justice…can love overcome any obstacle ?.

I like this movie because Michael is the main actor of course, and his eyes, his handsome voice and…oh I should stop. I’m sorry.

The movie is absolutely well directed, the scenes and the setting are amazing.

But you must know...that................You’ll cry a lot. 

Sometimes you will even hate them.

And then you’ll cry again.

I guess this quote sums up perfectly the movie: 

“You only have to forgive once. To resent, you have to do it all day, every day. You have to keep remembering all the bad things”.

FAR FROM THE MADDING            CROWD

The film (2015) faithfully reproduces Thomas Hardy's novel with a few revisions. The plot is quite complicated, the storyline is difficult to explain… One advice: you should watch this movie, you’ll not regret!. Briefly the story tells about Bathsheba Everdine, a strong and indipendent woman who runs a farm in the english countryside. In her life there are three men: - Gabriel Oak, deep in debt pastor seeking his fortune; - William Boldwood, a wealthy landowner neighbour; - Sergeant Frank Troy apparently an incurable romantic. SPOILER ALERT: Who will win over Carey’s heart ? Clue: the cast, the charmest one is always the winner! Or…take a look at the poster!

The movie is well done even if sometimes it’s a little bit messy and, in my opinion the director gives too much importance to secondary characters not directly linked to the protagonist. The plot, as said before, is a double-edged sword: Vintenberg (director) tried to keep it as faithfully as possible to the book but, sometimes is difficult to hold the line of conversation… The story is understandable: she, he, the other, and the other…money, true love, a bit of insanity and there it is!

The setting is fabulous and Bath’s farm transmits peace and quiet: birds singing, sun rays illuminate barns and wooden furnitures give a touch of romanticism in a perfect victorian style. Fashion is not so important: countryside needs comfortable clothes and collected hair!.

The actors are the ones for a great work: Matthias Shoenaerts is an icon. When we talk about love and costume drama he cannot miss it! (take a look at: French Suite, A little caos, The danish girl and many other)…therefore a must!

Recommend to who is looking for a difficult happy ending story ( but it will be, I promise)!.

VIA DALLA PAZZA FOLLA

Il film (2015) riprende fedelmente il romanzo di Thomas Hardy con qualche piccola rivisitazione. La trama del film è alquanto complicata, ricca di intrecci e difficile da spiegare…Un consiglio: guardate assolutamente questo film, non ve ne pentirete!!! In poche parole la storia ruota attorno a Bathsheba Everdine, una donna forte ed indipendente che gestisce una fattoria nella campagna inglese. Nella vita di Bath ci sono tre uomini: - Gabriel Oak, un pastore indebitato in cerca di fortuna; - William Boldwood, ricco latifondista e vicino di casa di Bath; - Sergente Frank Troy, apparentemente un inguaribile romantico. SPOILER ALERT: Chi riuscirà a conquistare il cuore della bella Carey Mulligan (Bathsheba)? Indizio: guardate il cast, quello con più charme è sempre il vincitore! O in alternativa date un’occhiata alla copertina.

Il film è ben fatto anche se a tratti risulta un po’ “confusionario” e a mio parere, viene data troppa importanza a personaggi secondari che non hanno un legame diretto con la protagonista. La trama come detto prima, è un’arma a doppio taglio: Vintenberg (regista) ha cercato di mantenerla il più possibile simile al libro ma, essendo molto articolata, a tratti si rischia di perdere il filo… La storia di fondo comunque è ben chiara: lei, lui, l’altro e l’altro ancora…i soldi, il vero amore, un po’ di pazzia e il gioco è fatto!

L’ambientazione è da favola e la fattoria di Bath trasmette pace e tranquillità: gli uccellini che cantano, i raggi di sole che illuminano i fienili e i mobili in legno danno un tocco di romanticismo in perfetto stile vittoriano. Poco spazio alla moda: in campagna servono abiti comodi e capelli raccolti!.

Gli attori sono quelli delle grandi occasioni: Matthias Shoenaerts una sentenza. Quando si parla di amore e di film in costume lui non può mancare! (vedi: Suite Francese, Le regole del caos, The Danish girl e molti altri)…insomma un must.

Consigliato per chi vuole vedere una storia d’amore che fatica a decollare (ma decollerà, promesso).

                                           MADAME BOVARY

Flaubert’s novel (1856) tells about the famous story of Emma, a young and charmful side woman married to a wealthy widowed doctor. Emma is attracted by luxury and adventures, the opposite of what her quiet life in a small Normandy village. The movie (2014) is completely centered on the analysis of Emma’s character: short moments of satisfaction coexist with constant feelings of anxiety and depression…

Mia Wasikowska is almost perfect: her particular beauty is perfectly matched with Flaubert’s character, her angel face collides with her determined and provocative personality; Ezra Miller gives the movie that prime touch of mystery and sensuality.

The setting is classic and not particularly studied. The producer chose a typical belgian town surrounded by a green countryside. No scene leaves you breathless, they could have done much better!

Merit note: the costumes. Wonderful clothes changed almost to every scene. Emma’s addiction to luxury and fashion is emphasized. Bright colors and glossy fabrics but also gloomy and melancholic clothes accompany Emma’s moods along the film.

It’s quite difficult to rate and almost impossible to compare the movie with the book. I think that everyone should watch it and draw own conclusion…personally I adore Mia Wasikowska and I adore Emma!.

Il romanzo di Flaubert (1856) narra la celebre storia di Emma, una giovane e affascinante ragazza di campagna che sposa un benestante medico rimasto vedovo per la prematura morte della moglie. Emma è attratta dal lusso e dalle avventure, l’opposto di ciò che le offre il marito e la sua tranquilla vita in un piccolo paese in Normandia. Il film (2014) è interamente centrato sull’analisi della figura di Emma: momenti di appagamento ed eccessi convivono con costanti sentimenti di inquietudine e depressione...

Mia Wasikowska non delude: la sua particolare bellezza si sposa perfettamente con il personaggio di Flaubert, il suo viso angelico si scontra con una personalità decisa e provocatoria; Ezra Miller offre quel tocco di sensualità e mistero che non possono mai mancare!

L’ambientazione è classica e non particolarmente ricercata. La regista ha scelto una tipica cittadina belga circondata da una verdeggiante campagna. Nessuna scena ti lascia senza fiato, potevano fare di meglio!

Nota di merito: i costumi. Abiti fantastici e molto elaborati, cambio di costumi quasi ad ogni scena. La passione per il lusso e la moda di Emma viene enfatizzata. Colori sgargianti e tessuti lucidi ma anche abiti cupi e malinconici accompagnano gli stati d’animo di Emma lungo il film.

Difficile dare un giudizio e impossibile paragonare il film al libro. Credo che ognuno debba trarre le proprie conclusioni dopo averlo visto...personalmente adoro Mia Wasikowska e adoro Emma!
