“She was the first Queen Regnant of Tonga and longest reigning Tongan monarch, with a forty-eight year reign. She had a difficult childhood, being shunned because her mother had not been a part of Tonga’s upper class. Her mother died and, when her father remarried, Salote was sent away to boarding school in New Zealand. She became queen when her father died in the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. She proved very successful and popular.”
