Let’s Talk About Discrimination

With social media being the number one source nowadays for news and humor of all kinds, more and more people are joining social networks like Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Tumblr. But some people abuse their power by using it as a gateway to end people’s social lives by cyberbullying. One particular case of cyberbullying that is most common is discrimination. To bring awareness to this social injustice, let’s briefly talk about it.

One thing you should consider when applying for job openings is that the managers do have the right to look you up on social media to see if you are eligible, but they can use their findings on your online profile to discriminate you and probably not hire you. According to an article made by the Wall Street Journal, Carnegie Mellon University conducted an experiment where they sent in multiple applications to job openings all across the United States and created Facebook profiles based on what they wrote in the application. It appeared that people who consider themselves Muslim have a longer waiting period to be called in for the interview than do people who consider themselves Christian. This form of discrimination is considered religious discrimination. We see this one every day. More and more people are discriminating Muslims as “jihadists” or “extremists ready to blow us up”, but not all of them are like that. Another finding that was intriguing to the research was that there was no telling on if the managers would discriminate on people’s sexual orientation.

Yes, discrimination is out there. All we have to do, as people, is to not become so arrogant in what we believe in, and what the media is telling us. So let’s band together and be nice to everyone around us. Let’s join hands and end discrimination by not voicing opinions that could hurt others.
