Was wishing there was a positivity post for original fiction writers since I see so many about how fanfic writers are doing so much for their communities even when they're not actively writing, and then I thought:
Be the change you want to see in the world.
So this is a positivity post for the writers out here who are working very hard on stories with no established community. Who can't talk about their blorbos and plot lines and brainstorming to anyone and expect them to know what any of it means. Who don't have much to share publicly, but are hoping they will one day.
You're doing a lot of hard work, and I recognize and appreciate what you're putting into the world, even when you're resting.

I know this is the website where we talk about artists and writers doing anything other than making art or writing, but man, we REALLY undersell how good it feels to actually work on your stuff.

This draft is fantastic, it just needs work on pacing, character development, plot cohesion, emotional depth, world-building, scene transitions, tone consistency, theme integration, conflict resolution, dialogue realism, and staying focused for more than 2 chapters.
Take your writing motivation dose for today:
You will finish that WIP.
You will find people that like it.
You will be recognized by someone as a living legend that you are.
It may not happen today, but it will happen. Stop the worries, stop the overthinking. You got this, you goddamn living legend.
Normalize leaving unhinged comments on ao3 fics you like. I'm tired of being the only one brave enough to write "I am chewing on this fic" in the comment section. Be weird. Authors will love you for it

Fuck NaNoWriMo
It's always been a shit way to write a book. Slamming through fifty thousand words in a month leads to burnout and a garbage draft you'll spend more time unfucking than if you'd actually just paced yourself.
I'm proposing Novel Outline November
Start with your idea on November 1st.
Write something for your novel every day. The only unacceptable amount is 0.
Attempt to complete the plot in 50K words. Stick with that as a limiting factor so you focus on what's most important to your story.
When it's done it's done! Everyone is a winner!
You will
Develop good writing habits
Challenge yourself to write long form
Create a base that can be expanded into commercial fiction (70-100K) or genre fiction (100-110K)

People, especially games, get eldritch madness wrong a lot and it’s really such a shame.
An ant doesn’t start babbling when they see a circuit board. They find it strange, to them it is a landscape of strange angles and humming monoliths. They may be scared, but that is not madness.
Madness comes when the ant, for a moment, can see as a human does.
It understands those markings are words, symbols with meaning, like a pheromone but infinitely more complex. It can travel unimaginable distances, to lands unlike anything it has seen before. It knows of mirth, embarrassment, love, concepts unimaginable before this moment, and then…
It’s an ant again.
Echoes of things it cannot comprehend swirl around its mind. It cannot make use of this knowledge, but it still remembers. How is it supposed to return to its life? The more the ant saw the harder it is for it to forget. It needs to see it again, understand again. It will do anything to show others, to show itself, nothing else in this tiny world matters.
This is madness.

forms of eldritch horror include but are not limited to - nobody will ever believe you, you must live alone with this knowledge - you will never feel safe again, and you realize you were never safe before - everything that was familiar is now strange and abhorrent to the point anything that now seems normal should be held in utmost suspicion - having this new knowledge has opened doors that will continually reveal new equally cursed knowledge without end - death and madness are no longer escapes
I’ve always felt that the idea of madness or sanity in an eldritch horror sense were misnomers. If anything, I feel a better term is a change of perspective. There is nothing inherent in seeing a greater being that “drives you insane”, it’s that this being doesn’t fit into your previous worldview at all and you have to wrestle that. Every character can and should react differently, changing in ways that “make sense” for them. It’s either a change in worldview or attempting to fit the greater being into your preexisting one. Both will have negative results, but will be interesting as hell to explore.

I don't know if I've just reached Old Crone status on here, but looking back I think when it comes to my first book obsession geared towards kids:
These books were crack to me. I would read them over and over, and try to get the latest one as soon as I could. I got so emotionally involved that during the "David Trilogy" I had to continually stop reading because everything was going so wrong I was getting physically upset.
The best kid series where the main cast gets killed and dismembered multiple times over.
Additionally, when I read the ending it haunted me so badly I never read any of them ever again. Maybe I should after all these years.

Okay, I am incredibly scatter brained right now. I think that word count is spread between three different stories. I'll count this month a success if I can get from a beginning to an end. It doesn't have to be great, it just has to be a completed first draft.

This week I focused on lore and updating my World Anvil pages. I feel like I have some pretty cool stuff worked out, and the histories of the two countries I'm focusing on have really started to solidify into something tangible for me to build on. I also picked at the poem I'd really like to have done by the end of the month. It's pretty rough and unfinished but I do have something written down which is better than a blank piece of paper.

Frankly at this point I'm giving 50% of the credit for my word counts to 4thewords, and my desire to keep up my streak there.
I have been working on of two conlongs and one of them has come far enough I was able to assemble what is essentially a children's nursery rhyme:
aaleen okhoi elseen okhoi tifan okhoi gazaan okhoi kher kher kher
dog of the mountain dog of the sand dog under the tree dog under the land howl howl howl
It probably wont get used anywhere, but it was a fun exercise.

Okay, while I am supremely grateful that using 4thewords helps me get words down on paper (good or bad), I feel like I need to use stempos on my life after this. I am usually not this productive with writing, and I have ignored/skipped doing a lot to get these consistent word counts in. I'm going to be taking it easy next month, writing-wise and just let whatever writing is going to happen.
Some good news is I cracked a MAJOR over-arching plot issue that has been bothering me for what feels like several months. *confetti*

I love that writing feeling where a story starts going in a very different direction than the one you initially intended, but somehow this new direction actually achieves your desired goals way better than the original plan would have done.
