Robin and Ramy ~ Babel by R.F Kuang

i need more characters who haunt the heck out of the narrative. Characters who no one knows their name but can still feel their presence and see their decisions in the world. Characters who die halfway through the novel but their name still echoes to the very last pages. I want a character who has their symbolic claws so deep into the story that no one can bake a damn muffin without the flavor being an ode to their story.

Ramy and Robin mirroring Patroclus and Achilles…

falling into the roles that they were taught through learning Greek and Latin… but like in a cooler, queer-er way.

-The scene where Robin notices the bodies in the Old Library were just left there… (similar to Achilles seeing Patroclus’s body)

-Ramy’s death is what FINALLY motivates Robin to want to destroy the silver industry. Not the death of his brother (he chooses to keep the photo rather than the letter, for Ramy’s visage), not when he learned what happened to his mom, not even 100% visiting Canton. It was Ramy’s death that changed Robin from being nervous and questioning to only focusing on the destruction of the silver industry and colonization and then his own impending death.

-They mirror the not so subtle queerness that so many classicists try to erase
