hall mark (museum worker wylan au) fun facts

i'd say i put too much thought into this au but i did in fact write the whole fic in uh. 8 hours. but these are some background facts that flavored the au that weren't outright mentioned, as far as i know

kuwei + wylan are in their last year of undergrad—kuwei's in environmental science on a geoengineering track, while wylan's a double major in chemistry and studio art

each intern has three different halls they rotate through in a shift (the insectarium is a required one, which is why kuwei works a rotation there):

wylan's halls: insectarium, discovery room, north american forests -> the insectarium *is* required so he didn't need to pick it but i think he enjoys it both in terms of content AND interactivity. the discovery room is similar in that it has a lot of interactive aspects (live animals, touchable items) but it's also easier overall to strike up conversations in because people are more expecting to talk in there, which wylan appreciates for the lower barrier of entry for conversation. i deliberated long and hard over his third hall, and i eventually settled on north american forests over smth like one of the fossil halls (which i also think he'd LOVE) because it's one of the quieter halls with a few dioramas (which i think he'd like to examine/sketch), and i think he'd have wanted a lower stimulation hall to contrast his other super busy/interactive halls. also this hall has a freight elevator i could have wylan blab about

kuwei's halls: gems & minerals, hall of the universe, insectarium -> gems & minerals is ofc very related to his major but also there's a chemistry-based interactive in that hall where you can like. drag and drop different elements to make compounds that i think both he and wylan would like fucking around with. idk he feels like a rock kid to me. likewise, he feels like a space kid to me. i also picked hall of the universe because i talked to a hall of the universe facilitator + she complained that babies kept peeing on the floor there and i thought it was just. really funny to imagine kuwei bitching about that. beyond that, i feel like kuwei's halls being more information-dense/halls with more abstract explanations fits.

kuwei is 100% fucking with wylan this whole time. he's not SURE jesper is a robber (which is why he still gives jes wylan's schedule) but bc he actually works in the hall jes is casing, he does eventually pick up on jesper is like. definitely counting the guards + asking about how the hall is maintained + stuff like that. he's kinda just like. eh wylan needs to get laid it can be with a guy planning a robbery if he's hot enough

a jesper pov of this would be deeply entertaining bc in the crows gc he's playing his own game of "is cute museum boy dating his coworker or not" after watching wy and kuwei bickering. kaz is telling him to get his shit together + STOP GETTING DISTRACTED DID HE GET THE GUARD SCHEDULE + jes is just like. whatttttt. nooooo. guess i have to back—next wednesday. for no reason. not because wy doesn't work until then again. haha

kaz absolutely knows who wylan is btw. he does not mention this to anyone but like. he did his research. he knows this kid'll either be a good hostage or has daddy issues he can work around

i'm in love with the idea of jesper one day coming home to the mansion after a particularly hard day and struggling not to go gambling, andwhen he walks in, he immediately smells freshly baked cinnamon rolls, and can hear the faint sound of the piano throughout the house. and he wanders off to the music room, and wylan's there, with his back to the door, playing softly to no one in particular. and jesper just leans against the doorframe and watches him and he feels so warm and content and happy, truly happy, for what feels like the first time and years. and he walks in and sits on the piano bench by wylan and wylan just smiles at him softly and leans his head on jesper's shoulder and keeps playing and says 'i baked cinnamon rolls while you were out, think they're still hot' and jesper just puts his arm around his waist and says 'shall we go and read some more of our book and eat them then?' and they both curl up like cats against each other in the sitting room, with their cinnamon rolls, and their warmest blanket and their latest books that jesper is reading to wylan. and jesper is so happy that he didn't go gambling after the job, that he wouldn't have to break this beautiful moment by having to tell his favourite person in the world that he relapsed. because it might be hard sometimes, but he's found the comfort that he needed, that he holds onto, that he's scared to lose, and would do anything to keep it

The key to writing good fanfiction is to harbor a deeply humiliating desire, and the trick there is that even pretty basic and societally-accepted desires like “being held” and “being wanted” CAN and WILL be humiliating if they’re intense enough. Become so estranged from human connection that the idea of someone playing with your hair fills you with yearning so deep you feel like you’re going to throw up and you will write some banger fanfiction. It might have some other consequences too but idrk about that.

hermes in hadestown is the exact opposite of an unreliable narrator. a tortured narrator. a little *too* reliable. incredibly aware of exactly what is happening at any given moment, vaguely spoiling it for you in the beginning, despairing every second of it. but ultimately motivated to continue to tell the story over and over and over with a smiling face for the sake of the audience, and for the sake of the characters themselves, singing it again to keep them alive. knowing how it will end, but singing it again so that the cycle may restart and eurydice may come back to life. enduring the misery of it all, over and over, holding the knowledge of what will come to pass but continuing anyway to see orpheus happy just one more time before it all goes down in flames again.
