the party was loud, drinks were flowing and everyone was talking. everyone except you and hamzah. hamzah stood in between chase and martin, nodding along to whatever martin was going on about. you were standing between claire and chase trying to focus on whatever joke they were laughing about. you couldn't, and either could hamzah.
hamzah's eyes were traveling over to you when things got too quiet on his side or yours. that soft smile on his lips, hamzah just looked so effortless always.
after a while mandy and martin wandered off somewhere, while claire and chase went to go film a stupid tiktok. now it was just you and hamzah, standing closer then necessary to talk.
"you having fun?" hamzah asked, lazy smile on his face. "yeah, are you?" you hummed back, too busy staring into his pretty eyes to really answer the question.
"yeah." he nodded, holding eye contact longer then he normally would. this was nice, this is what hamzah was looking forward too all night. just you and him, in your little bubble. it was rare there was a moment like this, just the two of you existing. there was no need for jokes to cover up silence, no need to be sitting apart staring at each other and wishing you could do this all the time without all the questions. "wanna get some air?" you hummed towards hamzah, which he didn't hesitate to smile, mumbling a small "please." you both stepped out onto the porch, the night air hitting your skin, a relief from the commotion of the house. hamzah took a seat on the railing, leaning back casually, his hands finding their place in his pockets. you leaned against the wall, standing opposite from him. this was a differnt version of hamzah, one he wasn't when the whole group was together. this was a quiter hamzah, and unsure hamzah, only something he would let you see.
âyou okay?" he asked, that smile against his lips, the one you only wanted him to give you.
âyeah, just⊠tired, I guess,â you shrugged, trying to play it off, but you knew he could see right through you.
hamzah raised an eyebrow. "tired of the party or tired of something else?"
you paused. the question lingered in the air between you two, heavy but unspoken. you opened your mouth, ready for all the pent up feelings to come out, instead you shrugged.
hamzah's eyes didn't leave your face once. "i missed you." he said, mumbling like it was some kind of secret he was letting you in on.
you let out a small laugh. was what he said funny? no, but it easier then trying to convince yourself to believe it. "we've been hanging out all week."
"not like this, and you know that." hamzah smiled, moving off the railing to stand against the wall next to you. both of your bodies instantly seeking each other. hamzah shoves his hands in his jacket, arm pressed up against your arm.
"i missed you too." you mumbled, so quiet he probably could've convinced himself it was the wind.
you felt him looking at you, like it had finally clicked that this was real. usually you had been the one to reel it back in after the flirting had gone too far, or things started to get real; but no, not this time. you forced yourself to give distance to the two of you, regretting saying anything at all. hamzah didnât pull away. he stayed there, just inches from you, like he was waiting for something to happen. the space between you both was charged now, thick with everything that had been left unsaid.
âyou always do this,â he murmured, his voice low and teasing, but there was a vulnerability behind it that caught you off guard. âpull away when it gets too close.â
you swallowed, shaking your head softly. âiâm not pulling away,â you whispered, but you werenât sure if you were talking about the distance between you two or the distance youâd kept from the feelings that were starting to make themselves known.
hamzahâs hand brushed against yours, not an accident this time. he kept it there, his fingers brushing over yours gently, like he was waiting for you to make a move.
you wanted this, you wanted him. you moved your index finger in between his thumb and index finger. it was subtle, but it seemed to soothe him.
his thumb traced over your knuckles, the simplest of touches, yet it sent a jolt through your body. you felt yourself leaning closer, your breath matching his. everything felt quiet now, just you and him, standing on the porch, no distractions. no one else around.
he was looking at you like he was waiting for something, a decision maybe, but you didnât know what that decision was. it was you who leaned closer, it was you who was staring at his lips.
without another word, hamzah moved closer, his lips brushing against yours in the lightest touch. it was soft, tentative, like he was giving you the chance to pull away if you wanted to. but you didnât. you stayed there, your lips meeting his, and it felt like everything else just faded away.
it wasnât rushed, wasnât forceful. it was just you and him, letting the moment happen. you could feel the tension easing between you both, the quiet that had been there all night finally broken, and it felt right.
when you both pulled away to breathe, hamzah let out a small laugh. "i knew you liked me." he smiled stupidly, in that same voice that he always uses to make you laugh. "please shut up." you rolled your eyes leaning into him, as the two of you listened to the muffled music from inside. maybe hamzah was more then your friend after all.
