very good girls (2014)
the last thing he was expecting was for ivy to get out of her warm, probably cozy, bed. sure, he’d probably woken her up but what kind of crazy person would get up at this time of day for someone they didn’t even like? he didn’t care, though. couldn’t focus on something so trivial when it felt like his heart was in his throat and his stomach was close to emptying its contents right on the bathroom floor in front of him. the same tile that was freezing on his toes, chill racking up his spine as he continued to kneel. there was no way he was going to be able to stand up without lashing out or falling right back down.
immediately the sound of his name falling from her lips makes him cringe. he doesn’t deserve such soft tones, such comfort. his fingers tighten in his hair and he turns his head from her, staring at the pristine white wall to his right. ambrose attempts to sound threatening, to growl out a “get out” but it’s more meek than anything else. body stills as he senses her movements, feels her so close to him that their knees are brushing. his senses feel heightened and she’s overwhelming, the scent of her shampoo wafting over him as her hair falls into her face and in front of his. there’s also the heady scent of her, something soothing like lavender but rustic like home. it’s the same smell on her sheets that he washes sometimes for her while she’s out of the house so she might be able to sleep better.
the thought makes him sigh and he allows his hands to lower slightly. one braces itself on her thigh cautiously and the other grabs for her arm gently as he rests his forehead on her shoulder. he shouldn’t allow himself to do so, shouldn’t take solace in her company, in her touch. he’s a weak man, though. a SELFISH one. ambrose shakes his head deliberately, stubbornly, before speaking. “not safe, not safe.” nails dig a little bit into the soft skin of her thigh and he automatically regrets it, withdrawing his hand, placing it on the tile. “never safe.” his eyes dart to the side, towards where his knife has fallen onto the ground to the left of him. he hates it out of reach, unable to protect himself, to protect them if he has to.
one more shake of his head and he’s pulling away from her, guilt racking his features as he backs away. stands up, whole body visibly trembling. even his heart is shaking in his chest, blood rushing to his head as he grips onto the sink counter to steady himself for a moment, vision blurring. there’s two of her for a moment and he clutches his eyes shut tight before opening them, blinking hazily. “what? what? no.” he reaches for her, hands going to either side of her face, lithe fingertips sliding behind her ears to grip gently in her hair. “you don’t get it. it’s not SAFE out there. you don’t know who’s in here, what they’re capable of.” his eyes are wide and rabid, staring at her intently. “can’t leave, can’t leave.”
there’s silence for a moment, just the sound of his heavy harsh breathing filling the air between the two. and then he’s moving again, always moving. “i’m sorry, i’m sorry.” ambrose clenches his jaw, staring at the open doorway with narrowed eyes. taps his digits against his thumb one at a time, a habit of his. anxiety is still there anyhow and he rubs his hands together desperately, the feeling of smooth skin freaking him out. he needs his bandages, his knife, his team. “ivy— ivy, i need you to get simon. get ray, get my god damn bandages— ”
before lips could chance the opportunity to speak once more, words were devoured in a single touch. the grasp on her thigh tightening as breath hitched. invasion of personal space, something she hadn’t predicted to be returned. it was a territory many knew better not to enter, that breach of comfort daring upon fatal outcomes. yet for ambrose this was broken, her own boundaries cast aside. this was new. this disowning of everything her compulsion suffocated her with, a moment of trust.
words rung in her ears, the feeling of being helpless sinking in. ivy could only keep her eyes on him, suppressing any thoughts that could flick back to her brother. fingertips buried themselves within his locks guided him closer, hand ghosting over the nape of his neck pulling him into her embrace. “ it’s safe. ” it was useless repeating herself, but any train of sense had fallen apart. she too was weak, a fallen comrade in this war of control — the blind leading the blind.
a breath in for seven seconds, hold for four and out for eight. chest to rise and fall as she attempted to compose a thread of sanity but all is lose as the contact is broken, watching as ambrose withdraws. it’s within this moment of silence that eye line following his to the knife. it a twinge of fear that consumes her, a panic of the unknown damage he could cause. yet still features keep neutral, concern far too over whelming to worry about her own safety. “ i promise. ”
everything is so rapid, his own movements mirroring whatever is going on within his mind. it’s near impossible to keep up, eyes are heavy an unseen tiredness lingering. gaze drifts back to the knife, a sudden realization that settlement on the floor was a moment of pure madness. soles of her feet, knees lifted and within one moment she has reached his height almost parallel. tears soaked her eyes and stomach churned raw tiles beneath her feet stinging her compulsion.
ambrose doesn’t allow time for the shock to sink in, the weight of his hands against her head dragging all attention away. hands float with no intentions, gaze locked with his. she’s taking it all in, searching for a logical yet practical solution. this fall of silence needed but broken too soon. he’s moving once again, unstable but now what is needed is presented to her.
“ i’ll get them but you need to sit down. listen to me ambrose, i need us to get out of the kitchen. ” tone remained soft, a hint of begging lacing words. ivy couldn’t be of help when she herself was uncomfortable and this time she couldn’t give him a choice. stepping closer she placed her hand on his lower back, an attempt to guide him out the door. “ go to the sofa. i will bring you everything you need. ” thoughts return to the knife, body twists leaning down to grab the handle, throat tightening at the possible germs. “ here. ” ivy whispered, turning back and holding it out, awaiting him to take it. “ be careful. ” it was tempting fate, handing back a mans weapon.
equanimity swells his visage and he’s smirking at the acrid utterance her tongue spits at him. “ if you wanted to talk about my ARSE you could’ve just asked, ivy. i know you always found it irresistible, didn’t you ? ”
“ oh please don’t flatter yourself. ” eyes proceeded to roll within her skull, but still a smirk lingered on her lips, amusement being swallowed like a large pill. “ did you ever think that i might of liked you for quality's other than your outer extremities? ” it was rhetorical, of course. “ i mean if talking about your arse is what you want to do then let’s go ahead, but really we both know there’s not a lot to talk about. ”
Well, that’s sweet of you to say.
the twins, ray and simon, sit behind him bickering like normal and he lazily throws a hand back to hit whatever one he can reach upside the head. “shut up, c’mon. FOCUS.” it falls on deaf ears and he rolls his eyes, turning to look at his second in command with raised eyebrows. “any word?” the slightly shorter blonde shakes his head in response and the air crackles with apprehension as the men in the back settle down. “shit.” their radios aren’t working and he hits one on his open palm, knee bouncing tightly, foot tapping an unsteady rhythm on the floorboard of the tank. dropping it out of reach, ambrose narrows his eyes, glowering ahead through the dirt-covered windshield. “fuck this, we’re retreating. we’re getting the hell out of here, there’s no way i’m going in deaf and blind.” he clears his throat, waits for anyone to disagree with him, but they never do.
they’re only a minute into backing up, thick tangible silence between the four, when gunfire hits the side of the tank. ambrose stills– knows what it means– before a guttural roar pushes its way past his lips and he slams down on the brake, going to turn. the high-pitched keening sound of an explosive soars by and he grabs the dash above him, turning to stare at his men, all as pale-faced and white-knuckled as him, that he’s led to death along side him. he barely has time to choke out an apology before the crash, so fucking loud that the air turns into static and he clutches at his ears, trying to hold onto anything he can to prepare for what he knows is most likely his demise.
ten minutes later feel like seconds as he blinks awake, hands scrambling, pawing at the desert sand beneath his already gritty nails. “no.” it’s a pathetic whimper, wipes his face on his jacket sleeve and clenches his teeth as he crawls towards the wreckage that he knows in his heart was his own teams. there’s bullets swinging past him, patches of land exploding near him, but he tones it all out. continues on his death mission to look for a familiar face. wincing at every drag, hands burning, ambrose clutches at the face-down bodies around him, desperately flipping them over to get a closer look at them. none are the ones he’s looking for.
it takes a few more panicky seconds before he sees one of the twins, a mere nineteen year old, and he curses himself for never being able to tell the damn two apart now. turns out to be ray, clutching at the cross around his wrist and gasping for air as he stares blankly above him. ambrose lets out a gust of breath, knocked straight out of him, and leans over the younger boy. “hey, hey, buddy. don’t–” the other coughs wetly and ambrose rolls him onto his side precariously, shaking his head. “no, no, no, c’mon. breathe, damn it.” his hands tremble as he tries to steady the other as his body racks with coughs, choking and sputtering on his own blood that’s now coating ambrose’s clothing, his hands. “ray, i won’t let you die.”
he’s crying, doesn’t even realize it until after the kid takes his last breath and he goes to raise a hand to cover his eyes. he ignores his wet cheeks and attempts to gather himself, can feel shock setting in already. pushes it away purposely, digs in his comrades pockets and pulls out the pictures he knows are in there. the family he’d heard tons of stories about, that simon was apart of. ( probably dead. ) slips them under ray’s fingers that are still clutching the necklace and stands up wobbily.
it’s the pain in his leg that wakes him up, gasping like a drowning man, chest heaving. ambrose knows that he’s probably been yelling for last few minutes and curses his god damn mind, runs his fingers roughly through his hair then his hands down his face. can’t take this every night sober dreaming shit, reckons he’s either got to become night owl or drink a bit more heavily. above all he hopes he hasn’t waken his roommate. his hands feel off balance, weird, and he looks down to see the bandages have been torn off in his sleep. his breath quickens and he fumbles for the knife under his pillow, stalks his way into the bathroom.
the rational part of his brain tells him that there’s no one there, no one out to get him. but he can’t get the worried faces of his team out there– his responsibilities, the deaths on his hands– or the blood pouring rivers out of ray’s mouth as he choked to death. the silence at dinner that night, the scars on his burned hands. he clutches the sink counter and shakes his head harshly, wants to knock it all out of his memory. raises his hands to tug sharply on his hair, a sharp “fuck” and he’s on the floor, on his knees like the begging, damned man that he is. needs his bandages, needs his friends, needs his mom, needs his– can’t breathe– i’ll kill you all, motherfuckers– simon– other languages around him, training, sweat, dirt, grime, blood, blood, blood.
sleep had never been a concept ivy’s body had accepted, eyes would blanket the space surrounding but shadows could only linger closer in the dark. it had become more of an unwanted habit then a necessity, with hooded eyes came lack of control, no strings for her to puppeteer and dominate the outcome. cotton sheets would feel like restraints against bare flesh, pinning her in a singular position. memories seemingly danced in the darkness, the voices of strangers that would consume her mind and suffocate any reminiscence of reality.
these groans of agonizing pain, a males voice soaking the air around. yet this voice was uncommon, tender tones of desperation than the cry of a child she was used to. this wasn’t imagination at it’s peak, these spikes in speech weren’t that of dreams. heat fluctuated throughout her frame, heart sinking to depth’s within her stomach. this was reality. her brother had been disregarded by her thoughts, eye’s flickering open at the another recurring disturbance. core strength tightened with shock, a single breath breaking the haze as torso shot upwards.
ambrose, the only culprit weary logic could home to. relief swapping pitted fear at the confirmation of further cries. hand lifting, palm making contact with the crease of her eye, rubbing away whatever sleep had managed to form. gaze flickered to the analog atop the bedside table, morning hours no one should ever see.
of course concern had riddled each moment longer she sat within her bed, staring at the door as if she expected company. yet ivy knew better than to wake another when nightmares struck, the end result far more damaging long term. still it caused discomfort, anxiety threading into her skull as lips parted to let out a heavy sigh. in times like this ivy wanted to console, to lead the individual to a place of peace, a fate she has lost with her brother. it was too late for her to lie back and dismiss what she had heard.
a brief moment of silence, indication that the issue had been composed, or was it. footsteps ran through the floorboards, eye’s tracing the invisible line her ear’s could pick out. this wasn’t her place to intrude, but curiosity would only intensify. pulling the covers over her frame, body twisted in the bed, feet colliding with the solid wood flooring. fingertips reached out, grabbing the nape of her dressing gown. a simple movement and the brunette had tugged it around her body. dropping her hand she pulled open the door, revealing only the sight of an empty room.
footfall padded in the direction her ears had lead her previously, eye’s falling on to a rather devastating sight. “ ambrose. ” words fall without hesitation, a beating heat stilling. instincts kick in, evading an concept of what degrading germs may stain the ground. hygiene is wiped from her mind, knees bowing bring her to his height.
“ hey listen, it’s okay. ” tone is soft, only decibels off a whisper. “ no-ones here, only me. ” no matter the conflict the pair had raged over in the past, this battle wasn’t one either could control. perhaps it was her motherly counterpart forcing itself upon her but hand rose to place itself on the back of his head. “ i promise you’re safe. ” words caught on the back of her throat, a wave of tears pushing to break through. it was that day all over again, words of comfort that just didn’t seem enough.
“ you’re not alone ambrose. ” free hand took hold of his shoulder, reassuring grip that she’s wasn’t going anywhere. irises could only scan over his features, the guilt of not being able to take the pain away a recollection of deja vu. “ let’s go to the sofa, i’ll get you a drink and then we’ll get the first aid box. ” plans didn’t need anymore description than was given, ivy knew all too well what he needed but this was all she could give. “ it’s just you and me. ”
.
and i realized N O we’re not promised t o m o r r o w
“Doesn’t seem to be anyone’s thing around here,” Felix remarked, making a face as he continued to dribble. “If I’d said rugby do you think I would have gotten more interest? Not that I don’t mind cheerleaders, but it’s less of a workout.” Shooting the ball into the basket casually, he shrugged as though that illustrated his point. “It’s only cold if you’re not up and moving about. Which is why I’m trying to get someone interested in a quick game. Besides I’d say it’s more brisk than freezing.”
“ oh no don’t let me trample your hopes, someone will play. just not me. ” ivy replied, watching him take a shot. “ and rugby is even worse, touching sweaty bodies and rolling around in mud. we evolved from monkeys, not pigs. ” smile touched her lips, a small reaction to her own humor. “ i haven’t played basket ball in years, i doubt i’d be an good anyway. hardly a challenge. ” words seemed to fall effortlessly, almost hinting that she’d give it a try. “ that’s sunny ‘ld england for you. better get your sunglasses out soon though, you’ll have to compact your whole summer into one day. ”
‘’as if that’s gonna keep a young man from emptying his bladder in one of the hidden corners when he needs a wee.’’ bex laughed lightly, shaking her head a little. ‘’maybe someone’s having sex in one of these nasty underground bathrooms at this very moment – the horror.’’ she teased.
words hit her ears like bullets that had ricocheted off a near by surface, stomach churing just at the thought. “ oh come on, i know it goes on but can we not. ” hand waved the air, a clear sign of her already disheartened defeat. “ public bathrooms are enough trouble for me, without having to think about the other possible bodily fluids that could contaminate them. ” of course the teasing tone was recognized in the others voice, but the brunette couldn’t stomach ‘dirty’ humor. “ i mean to you it’s happy hour, for me it’s my nightmare. ”
slender arms push at the napkin, bumping it over the edge of the table and onto the floor. she takes this opportunity in picking it up to look over at the alleged person, and in noticing their intense gaze she quickly looks over at her companion, eyes widened histrionically. “god, if looks could kill..” she shakes her head solemnly, “okay, do you want me to create a distraction so you can sneak out?”
it’s tempting fate as green irises watch the napkin float to the floor, almost like the two seconds went on for hours — a seeded wish for the napkin to not be returned to the table surface. rapidly it was shaken off, trail of thought broken by her friends words. “ i know, i mean i don’t know how they would know it’s me, it’s not like they’ve seen a picture. ” words ran to a close, soft sigh escaping before returning her gaze to rose. “ i think sneaking out might make me look more guilty. maybe i should just lay low, keep my opinions to myself. ” a hint of laughter invades the back of her throat, lips tugging into a smile. “ maybe we should just get lunch elsewhere? ”
Our doubts are traitors, And make us lose the good we oft might win By fearing to attempt.
Lucio, Measure for Measure (via brocialist)
dashiell breathed out, his face flushing, feeling instantly too foolish. he was always so tense around ivy, specifically. that woman is used to perfection, and so is he—but difference is, she needed it. his was a preference, if things weren’t perfect, he’d either change them or adapt. another thing is that, he cared about her, her safety, her comfort. he’d always put that first. “ yes, i, uh — i was wondering if you’re free this friday. if you’re not, maybe try to clear a whole afternoon for me. ”
her space was voluntary, but control essential. ivy knew all too well the discomfort she could force onto others, the distance she could push those she truly cared about. that was the thing, she was the epitome of little miss perfect but in her own eyes her greatest flaw was what graced her specific standards. “ i’m free. ” she wasn’t, but right now guilt had sunk to her stomach, his features a tell sign that once again she’d broken through the ice of discomfort. “ what have you got planned? ” ivy questioned, surprise or not, time with dashiell would always be moments she would cherish.
“ what the HELL are you talking about ? ” he straightens, childhood tar-thick in his chest. he raises his brow, opts to remain reticent. smoke filters out in curls from his lungs and he scans over her frame, observant.
temperament sunk into a hidden flutter of annoyance, yet instead she chose to take a less volatile path. “ oh you know, just talking shit, a concept you might be familar with. ” the edge of her lips sunk further into her cheeks, shit eating grin taking center stage. “ i’m surprised your arse isn’t jealous of what comes out of your mouth. ”
esoterichq answered your question:
neither , use Me as a fc
“ i think they know, i saw the man in the booth side eye me today. ” ivy expressed, arms crossing over her chest as gaze drifted to the left. “ okay so i did send them three rather extensive emails on the cleanliness of the underground, and added a chart of hygienic and profitable benefits but surely they understand where i’m coming from. ”
Maybe it was a bit cold for being outside playing basketball, but it really hadn’t stopped Felix from finding a court and shooting a few practice hoops. That was well and fine on its own but as soon as he noticed another person in the area he called out. “Fancy a game? It can be a quick one if you’ve got somewhere to go, but there’s always time to shoot some hoops, right?”
“ as much as i feel inclined to say yes, basketball isn’t really my thing. ” pointlessness wasn’t short coming, but with a ball smothered in god knows what from the floor that was a step too far. the temptation to accept did linger but she’d spend the evening submerging her hands in boiling water then smothering them in alcohol gel. “ but thank you, maybe i can watch just keep you company? ” ivy suggested, always a way around. “ it’s a little too cold to be outside don’t you think? you’ll catch a cold. ”
“ we——careful !” dashiell jumped, his heart skipped a single beat as he thought the hot cup of rich, red chai would smash and spill on the ground, or worse–on his guest. “ sorry, i – thought you were going to spill the drink on yourself. ”
“ i’ve got it. ” ivy muttered under breath, features riddled with a frown as she shot a warning look. “ i’m not going to spill it — on anything. ” she started as if it was obvious, surely it was. fingertips latching onto the cup for dear life pulling it closer to her chest, defensive instincts kicking in. deep breath and a single step backwards, utilize her surrounding space. “ what was you saying? ”
