when dazai was eighteen, he became famous overnight.
one book, that was all it took.
one haunting, brilliant novel that made critics lose their minds, readers cling to every sentence, and suddenly there he was, on posters in bookstore windows, on magazine covers, sitting under warm stage lights while interviewers called him the voice of a generation.
it was ridiculous.
he thought it was hilarious, and at his first major book signing, he was mostly entertained by the line of people wrapped around the building.
college students. older businessmen.
women sighing dramatically when they reached his table.
fans clutching books to their chest like sacred scripture.
then, you.
sixteen years old, bright-eyed, determined, and walking up to his table with the confidence of someone twice your age.
you dropped the book in front of him.
he glanced up.
you stared directly at him and said, “i love your book. also, do you want to date me?”
the entire table went silent.
his publisher nearly choked.
dazai blinked once. twice.
then slowly, a grin spread across his face.
“that is,” he said, uncapping his pen, “the boldest confession i’ve heard all week.”
“is that a yes?”
“that,” he said, scribbling something inside the cover, “is a legal complication.”
you huffed.
he handed the book back with a smile that looked suspiciously amused.
“you look like you’re about to collapse,” he says casually, like it’s a weather report.
you frown instantly. “i’m fine.”
“liar,” dazai replies, already stepping closer.
you don’t even get a chance to react properly before he’s lifting you off the ground.
it’s too easy for him. embarrassingly easy. one arm under your knees, the other supporting your back like you’re something he’s done a hundred times before and never bothered asking permission for.
“DAZAI-!”
“hm?” he hums, completely unbothered as he starts walking.
you grab his coat instinctively, glaring up at him. “put me down.”
“you don’t sound like you mean that,” he says lightly.
you do mean it.
you think. probably.
but your body has already betrayed you by relaxing slightly, settling against him instead of fighting.
dazai notices. of course he does.
his smile softens just a little. “you’re quiet now.”
“i’m plotting your death,” you mutter.
“how comforting,” he says, sounding genuinely pleased.
you turn your face away, but it’s already warm.
“…you’re very annoying,” you add.
“and yet you’re still in my arms,” he replies immediately.
you refuse to respond after that.
mostly because you don’t want to admit how safe it feels there.

chuuya does.
“you’re gonna fall over,” he says flatly.
you blink. “i am not-”
he doesn’t argue. he just scoops you up.
no hesitation. no warning. like it’s the most obvious solution in the world.
you make a small noise of protest, grabbing at his coat. “hey- what are you doing?!”
“you were about to faceplant,” he says.
“no i wasn’t!”
“you were literally leaning into the air.”
you open your mouth, then close it again.
because okay. maybe you were a little tired.
but still.
“put me down,” you insist weakly.
he doesn’t.
instead, he adjusts his grip slightly like you weigh nothing. “no.”
“…no?”
“no,” he repeats, like that settles it.
you stare at him. “that’s not how this works.”
“it is now.”
you huff, crossing your arms as much as you can while being carried. “you’re bossy.”
“you’re light,” he counters immediately.
“that’s not an insult.”
“didn’t say it was.”
you go quiet for a moment.
his arms are steady. annoyingly steady. and warm in a way you don’t want to think about too much.
“…you’re not putting me down, are you.”
“nope.”
you groan into your sleeve.
you absolutely, definitely don’t like this.

you don’t even notice when it happens at first.
one moment you’re standing beside him, talking. the next, your feet are no longer touching the ground.
you stiffen instantly. “fyodor.”
“you are tiring yourself,” he says calmly, as if this is a reasonable response to that observation.
“that’s not an excuse to-!”
he doesn’t react to your protest. just holds you with absolute certainty, like there was never another outcome.
you hesitate.
then frown. “you could’ve asked.”
“and you would have declined,” he says.
you pause.
“…fair.”
he continues walking, unbothered by your mild outrage.
you, meanwhile, are very aware of how easily you fit in his arms. how controlled everything feels. no shaking grip, no awkward shifting—just steady, deliberate support.
it’s irritating.
it’s also… comfortable.
you glance up at him. “you’re weird.”
“you are safe,” he replies.
you blink at that.
he doesn’t elaborate.
you sigh quietly and stop resisting the urge to relax a little.
I need more Kunidazai content where it’s acknowledged that Dazai’s like 90% of Kunikida’s impulse control. When it boils down to it and lives are on the line Dazai is the calculated methodical planner and Kunikida is the one impulsively grabbing a bomb and diving out of a plane without warning.
I mean just look what happens to Kunikida when Dazai’s not around he’s the only member of the Agency assigned a partner for a reason.
BSD where everything is the same except for the fact Dazai has a cat that behaves EXACTLY like him and on days he skips work, it tends to lay in the agency and demand treats, and so everyone thinks that Dazai has some secret 2nd ability to turn into a cat. He cannot. The cat just knows where to go get treats.
cut to the agency treating dazai's cat like he is dazai. one day, dazai walks in on his coworkers talking to the cat like he is dazai. he will never let them live it down
whenever I confess to people that i feel like I am just roleplaying as a normal person they're always like noooo you don't strike me as someone who's roleplaying as a normal person at all!!! :) and every time internally im like well yes that's because I am excellent at it
