Hitting the streets to make your voice heard is a fundamental right in the United States, and it’s part of our country’s lifeblood. Whether you’re headed out in support or dissent, you should know what you’re getting into before you go. Even if you think the event is purely peaceful, someone else, another protest group, or the police may all have different ideas. Here are some tips to prepare before you go out to have your voice heard.
When you're dealing with the police, it's important to know your rights so you don't do anything that could cause you unwanted trouble. It may be hard to remember every detail in the event it happens, however, so we've created some handy printable cards you can stick in your wallet to make sure you're always prepared.
Our friends at the Electronic Frontier Foundation have released a handy "Tips for Talking to the Police" cheatsheet intended to help you understand your rights, specifically in regards to searching your digital stuff.

Preparing to attend the rally against Trump’s anti-immigration order tomorrow in front of the RI statehouse from 1-3 with my Iranian colleagues, who are now trapped in the country while trying to earn their PHDs in Geoscience. This is getting absurd.
What do fame, wealth and lots of sex bring? Exactly the opposite of what you think.
Note to other scientists...
With this sudden influx of threats to our freedom of speech and research, I am finding it difficult to figure out how to balance my responsibilities as a researcher with my responsibilities as an active citizen, and I’m sure other scientists are too. Just remember that it’s ok to save yourself before saving the rest of the world. Take care of yourselves, you’ll need it.
This will likely be taken down, so get it while it's hot!

When this all started happening I followed this scientist, and he immediately followed me back. And all I could think was “LET’S DO THIS.”
A required read from Michael Oman-Reagan.
This is all true. This all happened in Canada, and its very likely it will happen in the USA under Trump and be worse than Harper’s crackdown on Science ever was.

This is pretty overwhelming - take some time, get through a few of these articles.
I will be reading all of this tomorrow and will inquire about distributing these materials to my university colleagues. Thank you to whoever put this together, incredibly helpful.
