It’s that time of year again! Twice a year, The Dinner Party undergoes an extensive cleaning by conservators with the assistance of collections management staff. The settings are removed to clean the ceramics, and the textile runners are removed and thoroughly vacuumed. At the same time we also check for any changes in condition, and thoroughly clean the surrounding space.

Kara Walker’s bold installations of wall-sized black-and-white silhouettes address the complex legacy of discrimination, oppression, and sexual exploitation initiated by the transatlantic slave trade. Blending elegantly crafted forms, biting humor, and horrific, often violent subjects drawn from stereotypes of the antebellum South, she avoids explicit narratives, instead compelling the viewer to contemplate multiple interpretations.
