This is a Japanese beetle. They are invasive to the USA. Do not crush them! The smell will attract more beetles, and you definitely don't want that. Eliminate them in some warm, soapy water!

I believe this specific tree is a Black Oak (Quercus velutina). They are one of the most beneficial Oak trees for wildlife. They feed the squirrels, birds, and deer. Their hardy and tough exterior make them a great addition to help boost local ecosystems.

Echinacea purpurea, or purple coneflower, is a medicinal plant that helps the immune system. It is often found in teas, cough drops, and gardens! It is recognised by its cone like shape (a result of its drooping petals and gumdrop shaped disk) and super spiky center. You'll know one when you see it! Their name comes from the greek root word "echinos," meaning hedgehog.

This is an amazing invention by trees that acts similarly to a scab or dead skin on people. It protects and insulates trees from harsh weather and things that want to eat it. Each tree species has its own unique pattern and features. You can even tell the trees history by looking for injuries in the top layers. When taking your next forest walk, city meander, or even just sitting in your backyard, take a closer look 🔎.
