27
November birthday.
the bell rings as the dark dull figure steps through the door around 6:30 in the morning, smelling of cigarettes and manila folders and parking lots after it's rained. he grumbles as he trods tiredly to the counter, seemingly annoyed when he checks his watch as he shakes it and holds it up to his ear. he sits down with a huff and rests his face in his hand.
"boy, what a day..." he seems to be unaware of the time, thinking that it's still the late night of yesterday.

Always a glowing review this early in the morning.
[A woman with red hair, smiles at him.]
Should I go ahead and get the coffee pot going?
"yes please," he mutters without taking his hand away.
"morning, really...?"
he grumbles under his breath about it, moving his arms to rest on the counter in front of him.
[She flicks on the coffee pot.]
Just a couple minutes on that.
[She passes him a menu.]
What had you up so late last night?
he keeps his head down, looks at the menu on the counter.
"...work."
You must be getting quite the overtime.
he snorts.
"i'm self employed, miss h- ... miss. ma'am."
[She catches the slip of the tongue.]
Don't know what all the secrecy is for. It's not like my name is something that I hide.
"well it's just, i, er... haven't met you in person before. so i wasn't sure if it'd be strange that i'd know your name."
Not at all, but I am curious now how you know it.
"you know, i... i forget where. probably heard it from someone else talking about the diner."

the private detective sits at his chair, back to the desk as he faces the window, blinds half slitted. the smoke from his cigarette billows lazily around the room, and he sulks silently as he gazes out the window to the dreary world outside. his door says "walk-ins welcome".
[A woman with long, black hair in a well-tailored suit knocked on the door. She scanned the detective, one eye deep, emerald green and the other a more dulled, almost grey color. She walked with an ornate cane.]
May I come in.
he answered without spinning around in his chair, blowing out the drag of smoke he'd just taken.
"enter."
[The woman enters, closing the door behind her.]
What sort of cases do you take, detective?
he spins in his chair partway.
"well, I specialize in missing person cases, which, this being Hatchetfield..."
he sighs.
"but I'm willing to hear out anyone who comes to me asking for my help."
Just so happens a missing person is who I'm looking for.
[A proper look at the woman reveals her to be Penelope Templeton. Templeton has a very colored past, rising through the legal system to be the DA under mayor Lauter, retiring from that and being the CEO of CCRP for a time before its abrupt collapse. She now seems to do consulting work mostly.]
"say, weren't you... CEO of Coven Communications Research and Power? my... that is, I used to know someone who worked there. Miss Templeton, yes?"
he spins his chair the rest of the way around, sticking out his hand to shake.
"you've seen my name on the door, but I'm Karawski. or J, if you like."
That was a different life, Mr. Karawski. I am no longer affiliated with them.
[She sits down across from him, a hand still on her cane.]
"ah. a new woman. a new life. i understand completely."
he taps his cigarette into the ashtray on his desk.
"that company always did seem... off, anyway. you said you had a missing person case?"
That I do.
[She slides a file over.]
Rachel Ansbury, age 16. Ran off about a week ago, and those who still had contact haven't heard from her in 24 hours.
he lifts the file up and begins looking it over.
"ran off, did she? hmm, maybe... did you know her? who do you mean by those 'in contact'? if she's a runaway, she might not be speaking to her family, but still secretly be speaking with her friends. i'm curious as to what her home life was like."
That's who I'm referring to. Her friends have been in contact the entire time she's been gone. Her parents are in the processed of getting divorced, likely the cause for the running away.
"ah, i see. so now even her friends can't reach her? it sounds less like teenage rebellion, going to sneak off to get away, and more like... some kind of real trouble. how did you know her?"
Her mother is a client of mine.
he nods thoughtfully. his next words are chosen carefully, after a brief moment.
"did she have any friends or family outside of town?"
None that we're aware of. But you know how kids are with technology nowadays.
"heh. i've got an idea."
he scoffs in dry amusement.
"did she attend hatchetfield high? i may have to pay a visit to ask her friends who were last in contact with her about the situation."
Sycamore, actually. I can give you a list of contacts.
"timberwolves. ha. maybe that's the real reason she ran off."
he smirks at his own poor taste joke.
I don't find a missing child amusing, detective.
he coughs.
"r-right. of course. ah... anything else i should know about? the only lead i've got is her sycamore friends, which might not yield anything. any details might be crucial, even if they don't seem relevant. i'm wondering if she had any places of refuge she sought in the past she may be hiding in now, especially."
I understand that she was quite the mall rat. When not at school or with a friend, she was almost always there.
"that's a good thing to know. i'll make a note of it. well, if there’s nothing else, miss Templeton, i'll see to it that this case is pursued before anything else in my files."

[She sits down across from him, a hand still on her cane.]
"ah. a new woman. a new life. i understand completely."
he taps his cigarette into the ashtray on his desk.
"that company always did seem... off, anyway. you said you had a missing person case?"
the private detective sits at his chair, back to the desk as he faces the window, blinds half slitted. the smoke from his cigarette billows lazily around the room, and he sulks silently as he gazes out the window to the dreary world outside. his door says "walk-ins welcome".
