Day 4: What Could Have Been | Elia Martell and Baelor Hightower
“The only one who was even halfway presentable was young Baelor Hightower. A pretty lad, and my sister was half in love with him.”

Albert Camus, from a letter to María Casares featured in Correspondance, 1944-1959
They are judging you
"You said I killed you – haunt me then! Be with me always – take any form – drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you!"
Wuthering Heights – Emily Bronte
“In our family, if you cannot write an epic poem or novel that by its originality knocks all other novels on the head, you are a despicable creature, and not worth acknowledging.”
— Jane “Claire” Clairmont; Mary Shelley’s step-sister.
Excerpt of a letter from Claire Clairmont to Lord Byron discussing her step-sister Mary Shelley’s new novel, Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus, 12 January 1818:
“I have Faults. I am timid from vanity; my temper is inconstant & volage. I want dignity. I do not like our Mary sail my steady course like a ship under a gentle & favorable wind. But at thirty I shall be better and every year I hope to gain in value. What news shall I tell you? Mary has just published her first work a novel called Frankenstein or, the Modern Prometheus. It is a most wonderful performance full of genius & the fiction is of so continued and extraordinary a kind as no one would imagine could have been written by so young a person. I am delighted & whatever private feelings of envy I may have at not being able to do so well myself yet all yields when I consider that she is a woman & will prove in time an ornament to us & an argument in our favour. How I delight in a lovely woman of strong & cultivated intellect. How I delight to hear all the intricacies of mind & argument hanging on her lips! If she were my mortal enemy, if she had even injured my darling I would serve her with fidelity and fervently advocate her as doing good to the whole. When I read of Epicharis the slave in Tacitus & of Hypatia of Alexandria in Gibbon, I shriek with joy & cry Vitoria! Vitoria! I cannot bear that women should be outdone in virtue & knowledge by men.”
Great Comet characters as dumb things I have done. (inspired by thegreatcometof1989's post)
Natasha: got hypothermia because I refused to wear a jacket while ice skating in polar vortex temperatures because it would cover my gown.
Sonya: got the hypothermia partially because I lent my warm coats to my sister and friend, insisting that I was fine.
Marya: Confronted a crackhead because he was up in my friends face and scaring her, he threw a punch.
Princess Mary: Cancelled my 21st birthday party because my grandma guilt tripped me.
Pierre: completely forgot my headshot and resume for an audition and still booked the job.
Anatole: climbed into subway tracks to retrieve a fallen brooch.
Helene: spilled vodka and scotch all over a vintage satin nightgown.
Balaga: Got a concussion in a mosh pit, didn’t stop moshing, went to work for a whole day without seeking treatment.
Dolokhov: climbed up onto the cabin roof at parties, two out of three nights of a vacation.
natasha was standing in the middle of the drawing room with a pale yet steady face when i appeared in the doorway she grew flustered and i hurried to her i thought that she would give me her hand but instead she stopped breathing heavily her thin arms hanging lifelessly just in the very pose she used to stand in as a young girl when she went to the middle of the ballroom to sing but the look on her face was quite different peter kirolovich pierre prince bolkonsky was your friend he is your friend he once told me that i should turn to you pierre sniffed as he looked at her but he didn’t speak till then he had reproached her and tried to despise her but now he felt such pity for her that there was no room in his soul for reproach he is here now tell him to tell him to forgive me yes i will tell him to forgive you but he have me your letters no i know all is over i know that it never can be but still i’m tormented by the wrongs i’ve done him tell him that i beg him to forgive forgive forgive me for everything yes i will tell him tell him everything but but i should like to know one thing did you love did you love that bad man don’t call him bad but i don’t know i don’t know at all she began to cry and a greater sense of pity tenderness and love overflowed pierre’s heart he felt the tears begin to trickle underneath his spectacles and he hoped that no one would see we won’t speak of it anymore we won’t speak of it my dear but one thing i beg of you consider me your friend and if you ever need help or simply to open your heart to someone not now but when your mind is clear think of me pierre grew confused don’t speak to me like that i am not worth it stop stop stop you have your whole life before you before me no all is over for me all over if i were not myself but the brightest handsomest best man on earth and if i were free i would get down on my knees this minute and ask you for your hand and for your love and for the first time in many days i weep tears of tenderness tears of thanks and glancing at pierre oh pierre i leave the room smiling and restraining tears of tenderness tears of joy which choke me i throw my fur coat over my shoulders unable to find the sleeves outside my great broad chest breathes in deep the air with joy despite the ten degrees of frost and i get into my sleigh
do you think two pennies is still enough for the ferryman or has inflation driven up the fare
