Heya! This is my general blog + Dangan research blog. I tackle mistranslations, beta sprites, and coding of the games, and basically any other facet of the series. Always feel free to send in a question if you have any!

Check out the tags on this post to browse the work I do. Under the cut are projects of mine I'm going to shill (lol)
Danganbase is my website where I port over all my research from here into an organized, nicely-presented place. Many things get re-written before being posted on there, to amend any errors or add extra info I may have learned after making a post. Still a work in progress, but I'm constantly chipping away at it. I also plan for there to be many exclusive pages, too!
A remake of my 2016 game Chiaki Sim with a complete graphical overhaul and added content. You play as Hinata Hajime trying to win the heart of Nanami Chiaki. Of course, things rarely ever go as planned... The game was made in Ren'py and can be played on any desktop device. Download here!
Hello, sorry this is out of the blue. But by any chance are you familiar with an old SDR2 promo visual(?) that includes Komaeda and Hinata sticking out from a doorframe?
I've been looking everywhere for more information on it, but the only traces of it I can find are old Pixiv works referencing it and this super low-res crop I found included in some compilation of images on an old tumblr post.
Yes, I remember this!
This is from the old Danganronpa website before SDR2's release, promoting the game. Obviously, it doesn't exist any longer, but thankfully, the Wayback Machine has an archived page. It was from the landing page where you scrolled around to choose what to look at. In this case, when you hovered your mouse over Monokuma, this door would open showing the image you sent. It would take you to the Characters page.
Stopping the game at 0x088ead08 and passing an argument through a1 lets us change the color of the capsule when using the MonoMono Yachine.
00 = Pink
01 = Light Blue
02 = Dark Blue
03 = Red
04 = Yellow
If you set the number to anything higher, it displays either nothing at all for the bottom half, or other random images (whatever it is closest to in memory). However, the number must be single-digit (including a, b, c, etc), anything higher will just make it by default display the pink capsule. I'm sure there's other quirks to be found, but yeah.
I've been finding it really hard to focus lately...which sucks. There's a lot I should be doing. Mostly I just passively work on disassembly efforts right now.
As a researcher of all technical aspects related to Danganronpa, one of those things includes scouring the web for information pertaining to ports of these games, such as to other consoles and countries.
Everyone knows Danganronpa is Japanese and was officially localized into English, but I think not as many people know it also received an official Mandarin translation released in Taiwan.
I cannot speak to the quality of the translation itself despite playing some for research purposes; I don't speak Mandarin. But the translation itself was done by Sony Entertainment of Taiwan, unlike the English release which was done by NIS America. The Taiwanese version also came first for both THH:DR and SDR2.
The PSVITA―the console of which the English and Taiwanese versions were sold on―is known for not coming with physical manuals for its games. Rather, all its manuals are stored within the game data itself. This is a very long way to say: the manuals are much easier to access and share than physical ones.
Each version has its own manual (except the European version, which just steals the USA version), but specifically the Taiwanese manual for SDR2 is the only one to have beta sprites I've never seen before.
Which, considering the kind of scouring I do on a daily basis...is shocking. What's more, the sprites themselves are oddly low quality.
Here's an example:
No, it's not you. For some reason, the sprites are heavily bit-crushed, while the rest of the visuals of the manual are completely fine. This honestly perplexes me more. Did the team do a sloppy job of resizing the sprites, or did they pull them from some weird place...? Considering some of these I have yet to find anywhere else, I wouldn't be shocked if it was the latter...
Now, I'll be ignoring the right-hand sprites; they are all the early "default" sprites that were misused in the original PSP release, so we already have them all.
I will instead talk about the left-hand sprites, in the order they appear in the manual.
Can I just say, it cracks me up that they chose this sprite for the manual. Isn't it a spoiler? I think this sprite is only used in Chapter 6.
Anyhow, always happy to see beta Hinata sprites! They're hard to come by! Unlike Naegi, who I think is tied with Komaeda for most beta sprites floating around...
I tried to make the .GIF as easy to follow as possible, and bit-crushed the finished sprite as well so it isn't as jarring of a comparison.
Anyways, a lot more changed than I thought by just looking! Hinata's bangs hadn't had the outlines sharpened yet. His right ear was completely reworked, and his right eye was significantly extended while his left eye slightly extended. His nose was made larger, his neck made thicker, and the "blue lines" on his forehead seemingly redrawn.
But most interesting to me is the fact they shaved off a good portion of his chin in the final sprite, which...is an odd choice to me. It looks more correct in the early sprite. Now with this comparison, it looks like the final sprite's chin is crooked to me. But what do you think?
We've seen this sprite before. If you want a full look, here is a post I covered on the SDR2 pre-release wallpapers. What I can add is we get a better look at her full body, and a lot of small changes were made. Her buttons were dramatically reduced in size, clothes folds either sharpened or entirely redrawn.
Again, another rather lukewarm find. I've talked about this sprite before in my Dangan Merch post as well as used the UTDP card as a reference in my "how to spot a beta sprite" post.
Komaeda appears to have weird proportions in regard to his face/hair between the two sprites, but that's entirely due to the bit-crushing.
No matter how many times I see this sprite, it always gets me. It looks so different!
For reference, this beta sprite is accidentally used as a "consent" sprite in the original PSP SDR2, but was fixed come the Vita remakes.
This sprite is also misused for Tsumiki's UTDP card, which...I'll cover someday...
I feel a bit bad showing you all sprites you've already seen, so I'll offer some trivia. The Tsumiki seen in the opening classroom shot in the Prologue is obviously drawn with reference to the beta Tsumiki sprite.
Makes sense, seeing as many CG arts would be drawn well in advance to the finalization of most sprites.
Nidai's sprite here is indeed a beta sprite - the same one mistakenly used in UTDP which I had discovered, initially, on accident, through an error I made on the original SDR2 Wallpapers post.
Beta Nanami sprite! This sprite can also be seen in one of the beta SDR2 screenshots (which I'm in the middle of putting together right now, as a matter of fact!) But we can see this same sprite used here as well.
It's harder to tell with the low quality, but there's several small changes: Nanami's hair has thicker details, as is a staple with these beta sprites, but her hand also has these same thicker outlines. Her shirt collar has a redrawn fold in it, for whatever reason. Her left eyebrow is not as long and her right eye has less detail in the eyelashes. Her nose is also not drawn as long. All in all, some minor but nevertheless interesting to see changes.
Same Twogami as seen the SDR2 Wallpapers, including that patch of transparency between his hair and shirt collar.
This Sonia, which is quite different, has been seen before on this SDR2 folder. That said, I find all the details here just as interesting as I did the first time around. From the changes in her braid, the folds in her clothes, her mouth, and down to the lighting error with her hair halo clipping into her bow and not even being present on her hair. It's one of my favorite beta sprite for that reason; such an obvious error that I find quite endearing.
Tanaka's seems relatively the same. Due to bit-crushing it's hard to tell what is a legitimate change and what is due to the low quality, but it looks to me his nose may be more outlined, and maaaaybe the mouth is different, but this could easily be due to the low quality, as said.
This is likely the same Saionji sprite used for the SDR2 Wallpapers, so it likely doesn't have any new differences, sadly. It's very hard to tell with the bit-crushing in any case.
Now this one is a big find. I have never, ever seen this Souda sprite before and I doubt I'll ever get the chance to see an HD version of it anywhere (ugh). But, at least we have it here! This sprite's main glaring difference is the lack of any purple coloration in Souda's face, leaving it completely normal. It may not be a line art difference, but that makes it all the more interesting to me. I feel like we rarely see coloration-only differences between sprites. But, don't let that big change distract you from the fact that this beta sprite has another huge error: Souda's zipper isn't even colored in! It has the right shading, but for some reason, there's no color, so the shading defaults to his jumper. My guess is this part is on a separate layer that was accidentally unchecked or placed below the jumpsuit layer. Also, one of the lines in his neck may have initially been shorter, but it's not super clear to tell.
I super wish we could have an HD version of this sprite, along with Hinata's. Maybe we'll get lucky one day and they'll accidentally reuse it in some promo stuff (lol).
Following Souda, we have yet another huge find! This sprite in particular means a lot to me...due to a post I made a while back discussing an elusive Hinata sprite. In the PSP Manual that that sprite comes from, there's another section that features it (in lower quality) but has a close up of this Koizumi sprite:
It's very low quality, being a manual and all, but I remember thinking at the time that the Koizumi sprite here looked meaner than her final sprite...but I couldn't really confirm it since it was just obscured enough that I couldn't get a good comparison.
Needless to say, stumbling across this sprite in this digital manual blew me away to finally see it in better quality (relatively speaking) and finding that, yes, I was right! She does look meaner! xD
I don't dislike that, though. Her eyes are more narrow and her right eyebrow especially is arched down, which does lend itself to making her look more critical. There's also a lot of minor line art differences in her hair and shirt folds, including a complete different fold shape for her tie. Her hand was also much thinner, including some fingers being redrawn.
Though I wish I could see a completely HD version of this sprite, I'm happy to get even this. This was something I never thought I'd get to see outside of the PSP manual, so it made me pleasantly surprised to lay eyes on it. Now, let's just hope that the Hinata sprite as seen in the PSP manual can also be found some day.
Sadly, try as a might, I cannot find any differences between these two Hanamura sprites. I suppose it makes some amount of sense, given how simplistic his design is, that there wouldn't need to be very many alterations.
Mioda's is the same from that wallpaper post, much like Owari, Twogami, and Nidai. Because the horns of her hair do not line up between the beta sprite and final sprite, I had to add some yellow behind the final sprite as to not end up with a somewhat confusing GIF.
I still regard this particular beta sprite as quite dramatic of a change, with almost every little detail having been altered in some manner, and some more stand-out aspects, like her hair or her eyes, were completely reworked. It still remains the same sprite in terms of pose and expression, but so many things, both big and small, were changed to the point of it being dramatically different.
Here is another completely new beta! While Kuzuryuu's face didn't change much (sans the much thicker eyelashes), many other details were changed, such as his hair, the detailing on his hand, and on his neck and shirt. While I do regard the final sprite as an improvement, I do really like the look that this early sprite gives us. His hair spiking up reminds me of other characters, like Asahina and Komaeda, who's hair also becomes erratic when being intense. It's understandably hard to make a character's hair, which is already short and spiky, even more spiky, which may be ultimately why they dropped it, as it can look sort of odd. Still, I wouldn't have minded if they kept it.
And finally, we have Pekoyama! This is actually the non-blushing variant of the beta seen in the file folder I covered. Much like there, we see the same differences, such as the complete re-arrangement of her eyes and expression, toning down how angry she looks. There was also much more detail added to her hair in the final sprite.
Because the file folder's sprite was so big, we could only really see her face, so this gives us the opportunity to dissect smaller elements, like how her hand was given far more detail with some editing to its outlining.
...And, yeah! What a fascinating little thing to stumble across. I swear, I always find beta sprites when I'm not looking for them.
