I've always wondered WHY? We have no photos of Napoleon's Marshals (I'm not talking about Murat, Ney, etc., they died long before the photograph was taken), but some of them (in fact, a large majority) died at a time when many people were photographed (and we have photos of Wellington, Metternich, Marie Louise, etc.). Either they were photographed but the photos were lost over time, or they were simply afraid of being photographed (which could be the case since they lived most of their lives in an era without photography). So here is a list of the marshals who could have been photographed (taking into account that the first selfie dates from 1839):
Etienne MacDonald, died in 1840
Claude Victor-Perrin, died in 1841
Bon Adrien Jeannot Moncey, died in 1842
Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, died in 1844
Emmanuel Grouchy, died in 1847
Nicolas Charles Oudinot, died in 1847
Jean De Dieu Soult, died in 1851
Auguste Marmont, died in 1852
If you happen to find anything resembling photos of them, please let us know, that would be great.
Today, my history teacher wanted us to present a figure from the Panthéon (in Paris), so a friend and I chose Lannes. I can see my teacher is furious that we didn't pick a 100% republican figure. No big deal, Lannes is incomparable, so I'm not going to change my choice just because Lannes isn't a "republican" figure 😝
It's been a while.
A little message I wanted to share. I know it probably won't please some in this community, BUT I don't think it's a good idea to infantilize or romanticize a character like Junot. When you think about it, Junot suffered from mental illness; he wasn't well and was sometimes violent. He's a complex character who can't be reduced to a "cute, sweet, innocent" figure. And that doesn't excuse some of the things he did.
By the way, this applies to all historical figures, not just Junot, but I was thinking mainly of him, given the problems he suffered from.
(Mental illness should be taken seriously; it's not something aesthetic or fashionable. Some people suffer from it.)
I'm back, with part 2 of the Marshals' statues (because, once again, that's all I have to do with my life).
King Bernadotte, Oslo, Norway
Cutie Bessière, Cahors, France (very cute town by the way)
Poor little Jourdan, Limoges, France (I'm the one who took the photo…so it's normal that it's dark)
Oudinot and his flowers, Bar le Duc, France
Poniatowski, Warsaw, Poland (By the way, I'm going to Poland soon, I can't wait!)
and the last one, Lefebvre, Paris, France (Louvre)
I'm back, this time I had fun collecting the statues of the Marshals (because I never stop), know that I found all the photos (except two) on a site called Napoleon & Empire (they have a section with lots of photos of statues) that part 1
We start with my husband, Louis Nicolas Davout, France, Auxerre
The King, Joachim Murat, Italy, Naples
My favorit ginger Michel Ney, France, Metz
Jean Lannes the best, France, Lectoure
André Masséna, or Mister Money, France, Paris (Louvre)
Jean de Dieu Soult (and it's not Nicolas) France, Paris (Louvre)
I've watched a lot of films about the Napoleonic era. Do you have any other films I haven't seen because I'm getting bored... Here's a list of everything I've seen:
-Napoleon (1927)
-L'Aiglon (1931, adapted from a play)
-Napoleon (1937, a 3-hour sound version of the 1927 Napoleon)
-Désiré (1954)
-Austerlitz (1960)
-Madame Sans-Gêne (1961)
-Waterloo (1970, definitely one of my favorites)
-Napoleon (2002)
-Napoleon (2023)
Actually, I haven't seen that many... unless I've forgotten some.
I saw that my comics got a lot more attention, so I took more pictures of volume 1 (I'll probably do the same when I finish volume 2).
Last Christmas, my father's historian friend gave me a humorous comic book about the Empire...this Christmas, he gave me volume 2
I've made a compilation of some of the characters who are in it.
For those who are interested, the comic is called "Le Petit Théâtre des Opérations- les Guerres Napoléoniennes"
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all received wonderful gifts (unless you don't celebrate Christmas, in any case, have a Happy New Year!). If you still haven't opened your presents... well, be patient!
There was something I really wanted to share, even if you don't care, it doesn't matter, I finally have the COMPLETE official version of Abel Gance's Napoleon!!! I'm so happy!
(Yes, I took the photo on my sofa, so what?)
I still remember the day I chose Ney as my topic for my Spanish class project... I actually got a 9 out of 10!
I'm ashamed... don't even try to decipher what I wrote.
What I'm about to say may have hurt some people, please don't take it the wrong way, I'm just expressing my point of view.
I feel like I'm about to upset almost the entire community, but I need to say this… I'm not against fan art in general, nor am I against humorous things about the Napoleonic era; quite the opposite, I love it. But fan art that's all kawaii, cute, like Napoleon with cat ears and big, sparkly eyes… please stop… these are problematic people (like Junot… yeah, him in particular) who were responsible for thousands of deaths, and now there are people making them all cute… what are we living in? What is this, exactly? Napoleon in a Care Bear world? NO, all fan art of this kind… but it's torture for me, and for the whole world, I mean it.
⚠️So before anyone starts tearing me apart for what I just said, I want to say that I love fan art in general. There are some people whose work I truly admire, and I want to encourage them to keep it up. I don't want to spread hatred towards people who make kawaii fan art of Napoleon, I just want to say that I don't find it appropriate to make kawaii fan art of people who caused many deaths (so this applies to other historical periods).⚠️
I finished the Napoleon 2002 series...I have an overdose of Caulaincourt...I like him, but he's everywhere!
(Ans why Ney is an old grandpa ?)
I found Lady Oscar IRL
My girl Marie Thérèse Figueur...slay girl
She's not a noblewoman, she's not blonde, but she's a boss
I didn't have time to make a picture, but it's Berthier's birthday!!!
Today in this horrible month of November, it's McDonald's birthday, yes, our national McDonald's. 🥳
I don't know what nice thing to tell you today, so I'll give you this...
This is a terrible drawing I made because I was bored (obviously often), and yes, it's Oudinot with Maurice... his stuffed horse, because I decided he had one (and on the bench is Lefebvre and Jourdan).
