WE ARE SKINT... This week we bring a special podcast from the man who graced Skint with his first single with us, "Dorola", in 2012. He later went on to join the "Back To The Boutique" mix series and engineered a fantastic take on the Skint catalogue expressing influence and skill in one exclusive mix. Belfast producer and DJ Phil Kieran's ever-shifting sonic palette took another twist recently with the release of 'Going There' (and b-side 'Getting Away') on Scuba's Hotflush imprint. Part old school electro, part new school vocal deep house, it's every inch a summer anthem-in-waiting – backed with remixes from Richy Ahmed and Ryan Elliott for good measure. But then Kieran's restless output has thrown up a variety of moments of marvel over his history, stretching back to the late '90s. Whether re-editing no wave punkers Bush Tetras or working with Green Velvet, his studio output combines the best of vintage, analog warmth with a progressive, forward-thinking mindset - which is why he's been in good company on labels such as Turbo, Soma and Cocoon. We don't have a tracklist for his DJ Weekly mix yet but suffice to say it's filled with raw, stripped-back jackers which revolve around the joyous piano of 'Going There' at the midway point.
Hmm, how do you say dee'licious, dee'lovely, D'Julz? Bass Culture boss D'Julz has been representing the deeper side of Parisian nightlife since 1992, and producing since the mid-'90s - releases for established labels such as Ovum and Circus Company making him a regular at nights like Circoloco, whether at DC10 or further afield, as in Detroit where we recently caught him. For a taster of why he's so travelled he sent us this live set, recorded in Berlin this April. The remix EP of D'Julz's 'Da Madness' is also out this week, with remixes from The Martinez Brothers featuring Phil Weeks, Rolando, Doc Martin and a 2013 re-mark from D'Julz himself proving groove really is in the heart.
Belgian producer Kolombo (aka Olivier Grégoire) is one of house music's most accomplished and versatile players. Just check his recent 'Busta Business EP' of hip-hop flavoured tracks for Solomun's 2DIY4 label, then compare it with the epic space funk of 'Sustain', forthcoming on Kompakt, and you'll hear there's no sound that he can't eek out of his studio. When he's not flying solo, he's running his own LouLou Records label and touring as LouLou Players alongside partner Jerome, or recording with Geoffroy Mugwump on esteemed underground labels like Throne Of Blood, International Feel and Permanent Vacation. Basically, we can't understand why he's not bigger so dive into his podcast and join us on the Kolombo bangwagon. 1. Junk Yard Rhythm Selection - Falling - Kolombo rmx 2. Christian Burkhardt - Delight 3. Kolombo - Whatever U Like 4. Betoko - U So Fine 5. Sharam Jey & Kolombo - Talkin2u 6. Kolombo VS Loulou Players - Don't Go Away 7. Kolombo - Get So Hot 8. Sounds of the the Groove Armada, they're super-stylin'... again. Having conquered main stages around the world and further showed off their musical tastes via their Love Box festival, Tom Findlay and Andy Kato have headed back to the underground of late, hooking up with one of DJ Mag's favourite labels, Hypercolour. Already Pete Tong's Essential New Tune, latest single 'Pull Up' welcomes Slarta John to add the heady MC vibes to their jump-up joint. This live set from their Rockers Revenge beach party in Ibiza continues their renaissance with the freshest new house sitting alongside plenty of Groove Armada's own tracks.
