Initial Sketches for Storyboards
Before our final interim presentation I want to have at least one storyboard completed to show our fellow cohort, in order for us to gather some useful feedback. The first product and storyboard will involve a man at his desk in work, the boss dumps a pile of work for him todo before we leaves work. He drinks his Grand Cafe Coffee and is taken from his desk to a jungle. He sees an array of animals, however he’s still in his work place.
Whats needed…
Myself and Jack have decided to delegate tasks up before we have our final interim presentation. We want to have some final pieces to show for our final brief, get some feedback on this and be able to have a good body of work before the deadline. Jack has decided to do the packaging for the four products, and I have decided to create four storyboards which will allow the campaign to come to life.
The stories will involve people drinking the products and being taken from a stressed, busy or horrible situation to a fantastic paradise. The locations for each drink will be were its from, for example the Grand Cafe Rainforest, the person drinking the Coffee will be taken to a jungle.
Grand Cafe product profile
To gather a greater understanding into the Grand Cafe brand, myself and jack reviewed the brief from the YCN. We noticed that there are four individual products under the Grand Cafe brand umbrella. Each products doesn’t have a distinctive name, or image. Unlike the majority of coffee brands, each product has its own image and reputation. Their product name is very bland, and unimaginative, for example Fair trade, or Fair trade decaf. At this stage, we cannot give names to each product yet, because we do not have a campaign idea. However when we do, we intend to devise names or each product, in a creative manner, and in relation to the campaign.
NMP Evaluation
Q1. Briefly describe the work you have submitted for the NMP module highlighting its aims and purpose.
I have submitted a range of work that highlights my skills. I like to pick briefs that allow me to come up with an idea that is unique and then turn it into a successful campaign displayed on a various range of media platforms. I like to take each campaign all of the way so that there are no stones left unturned. The 4 briefs I chose for NMP where all different which has allowed me to test and improve my skills. It took me a while to choose the right briefs as I wanted to have a whole body of work that will highlight my skills at the end of it and I think I have achieved that.
Q2. How has producing this work helped you in the development of your creative practice?
I feel that this project has defiantly allowed me to develop my creative practice as I have chosen briefs that interese. Because of the projects I have completed for NMP I have now got a solid portfolio to help me get a job and get my name out there within industry.
Q3. How would you rate your personal engagement in terms of taking responsibility and managing the production of your work for the NMP? Consider your decision making, time management, use of resources etc.
I would say that the NMP project is by far the best project I have completed in terms of managing my workload, managing time and producing a professional standard of work. At the beginning of this project I choose the briefs I wanted to complete and I finished all of them to a high standard. I am really proud of myself for the work I have produced for this project.
Q4. How you rate the standard of the work you have submitted? What went well and what could have been better? What would you do differently if you were to do the project again?
I am really happy with the standard of work I have submitted as I feel that I worked consistently throughout this project. I stuck to my own personal deadlines which has allowed me to become more self disciplined. I felt that I could have took some of my concepts a little further. If I was to do this project again I would give myself a few days extra after each deadline to look over my work and refine it more.
Q5. What have you learnt as a result of producing your NMP work that will be useful and relevant to your creative practice after graduation?
I have learnt how to manage my time efficiently so that I work consistently everyday to complete a project on time. This attribute will be really useful when working in a design agency as briefs turnover times are really fast. I have also learnt how to present my work professionally in a PDF format which is really useful to highlight my work in the best way possible. I feel that after this project I am much more confidant in myself and my ability. I can work under pressure, and talk in front of big groups of people.
Q6. Which word would you pick to describe your overall achievement for this module – Outstanding – Excellent – Very Good – Good – Fair – Adequate – Unsatisfactory – Poor – Very Poor – Extremely Poor?
Outstanding.
I recently had a 2 week placement at EMS Internet which I really enjoyed. I learnt so much on how each team worked within the company and everyone was so friendly. They have even offered me another intern-ship when I finish uni with a full time job open at the end of it. The environment was also very fun with pool tables and football tables to play on when you needed to take a break.
I attended an open day with Nuttersons digital design agency based in Manchester’s city centre. It was really good to see people from industry and make new connections. Nuttersons is a creative digital agency who specialize in website design and development, graphic design, marketing and UX design. After attending the digital skills festival and speaking to several agencies, this is how I found out from the day about Nuttersons. I am pleased with myself that I attended this opening night as I feel more people are getting to know me within the Manchester design community.
Experimenting with different packaging ideas for our magic coffee bean idea.
MAGIC BEANS.
The idea that me and my partner @thomasgorst are taking forward is called magic Beans. The idea behind this name is that the coffee beans are magic because of the positive effects it has for the farmers that grow the coffee all over the world. We are also going to give each of the UCC Coffee range products, different coloured packaging to visually bring our idea together.
Innocent smoothie ad.
Innocent smoothies. I love the way this company promotes itself in the way that they focus on the benefits of drinking the smoothies and also the benefits it has for the people who grow the fruit.

Packaging Research
I showed on a previous blog Percol packaging, however that was for grounded coffee. I came across on the opposite side, whole beans and Percol are selling one specific type of flavour. I really like the idea of showing the beans through the packaging, and enabling the customer the chance to see the product before they purchase it. Which in my opinion expresses how proud they are of their product, they don’t want to hide it they want it to burst out.
