Yesterday I visited the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, and while this monument itself was incredibly powerful and moving, I happened to capture this heart-shaped note that was stuck in the engraved name of a Mr. Joseph Jenkins Jr, among other names holding American flags and roses in their names. My heart goes out to the Jenkins family as they still mourn their loss, as well as all the families and everyone affected by this tragedy still.

In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, a world is imagined where prisoners are chained in place in a cave, forced to see nothing but shadows of people and creatures passing by, illuminated by a fire behind them. These prisoners know nothing but these shadows, therefore they assume that what they see is real and nothing else. But what happens if a prisoner was to be freed and looked back at the fire? His eyes would hurt, and he would realize that reality is not just these shadows cast upon a cave wall. If the prisoner was taken outside the cave, light would blind his eyes and his disorientation would be great - but soon he would be able to see reflections, dimensions, even himself. After learning this reality, the prisoner would then see how ‘pitiable’ his fellow prisoners in the cave actually are. If he were to return, he would know these shadows are not real, yet his colleagues would think of him as deranged, as they know nothing but these shadows on the wall.

My professor used this allegory with me today in regards to my attitude and emotions lately. I hadn’t had time to work on my assignments due to stress and other complications in life and she felt like I was letting my love of photography slip away from me. She told me she felt like I was letting myself become a prisoner in the cave, accepting the fact that what I see in the confines of my apartment or the confines of my mind is all there is to life. However, this is incredibly false, and I guess it took a bit of tough love and a push like that to get me back on my feet. The idea for the first photograph popped into my head almost immediately during our conversation, and (kind of ironically) I rushed home to shoot that, and the others just followed with ease. Open yourself up to the world. It’s worth it.
