People who argue against gun control with "Well then the good guys won't have guns but the bad guys will" frustrate me to no end!

Like, holy shit! The evidence for gun control is overwhelming, yet people always say "Oh, those statistics don't mean anything. I'm a legal gun owner." Good for you! But what about Johnny over here who got his gun illegally? What about Paul who is using his gun to "stand his ground" against non threatening individuals. Did you know that there were only 259 "justifiable" gun homicides in 2012? Against 1.2 million non-justified homicides? A year when more than 259,000 guns were stolen? A year when there were 578 unintentional gun homicides? So even if you are law-abiding, you are more likely to accidentally kill somebody or have your gun stolen than use it in self defense. How can you argue that your guns are making you safer?? Do you not understand numbers??

The Perfect Explanation of Privilege – In One Powerful Punchline

“The Pencilsword” is a comic strip by Toby Morris, an illustrator from New Zealand. His most recent comic, “On a Plate” hits hard at the heart of the issues of concerning wealth and privilege.

How many times have you heard the “I’ve never been handed anything on a platter” argument in regard to social security and other social benefits?

Toby wrecks this argument by showing how two children can grow up, be loved and supported, and yet still have two very different outcomes.

Make sure to follow all the way to the end for the powerful punchline. This comic is an increasingly sad reality for far too many of this nation’s children and families.

Their names are Carlos Polanco, Carl Snyder and Alex Hall and they defeated the Harvard debate team on the topic of access to education for undocumented children

Honestly this is so great.

This is a great story, but I really dislike the way the meme frames it.

1. The prison debate team is part of an important program in which Bard College brings prisoners a chance to get a rigorous college education. The lesson here isn’t that education doesn’t matter; it’s that education can help foster great achievements. Including for those who might normally not get a chance at a Bard College education.

2. The meme minimizes that the prison debate team members, by all accounts, work very hard at their education. This was not an “educated vs uneducated” debate, and framing it that way is insulting to the prisoners.

3. It irritates me that the three Harvard students pictured in the meme aren’t the students that participated in the prison debate. And the picture the meme uses seems chosen to play into some rather boring vapid-rich-kids versus smart-street-kids, as if this were a movie rather than real life. Here’s what the actual Harvard debaters looked like:

I guess that wouldn’t have played quite as well into the narrative as three random Harvard students wearing funny hats did.

That said, this is a great story. (There’s also a follow-up story which is fun to read; one member of the prison team was thrilled to hear that his nephew is bragging about the debate at school.) They’re making a documentary about the prison debate team; I hope it’s good when it comes out.

People keep condemning the riots when they should be condemning the problem

People are angry and taking their anger out. Destruction and looting isn't the best, but can you blame people? The most angry I have ever been is in a volleyball match, and I tried to rush at the referee that made bad calls. These people, on the other hand, lost a community member, neighbor, and friend. These people have experienced oppression that is unfathomable to many. If I was in their situation, I would be angry as well. Hell, I tried to charge a ref for calls in a game. This is life or death. So don't say riots are the problem. Say that the problem is the systematic oppression of an entire group of people. Say that the problem is the death of a man, unfortunately one of many men and women, based on skin color and the resulting bigotry that results from it.
