The native Maori people of New Zealand have tattooed their faces for centuries. They had a complex warrior culture before the arrival of Europeans, and suffered under early colonialism, but have experienced a cultural revival since the 60′s. 

The marks are called moko, and are etched with chisels instead of needles to leave grooves along with the ink. The true form is sacred, unique to each person, and distinct from European tattoos that mimic that traditional style.

Another mural of the US presidential hopeful crops up in Europe. By By VINCE CHADWICK

Love may have finally conquered fear in a new mural in the U.K. city of Bristol, depicting Donald Trump locking lips with fellow Brexit advocate Boris Johnson.

The roughly four-square-meter mural, similar to a recent Brezhnev-Honecker-style image of Trump smooching Russian President Vladimir Putin on the wall of a Lithuanian barbecue restaurant, was commissioned from community muralists Paintsmiths of Bristol by the pro-Remain group, We Are Europe.

“Not #INFORTHIS?,” the accompanying text reads. “Register to vote on the EU referendum now!”

Billie Holiday was performing in a Manhattan club in 1943, and between sets she took a seat at a table and ordered her usual Top and Bottom (a mixture of gin and port wine). Two white sailors from the South, on leave in the Big Apple, approached her, wanting to know where a “darkie” got off wearing a mink coat. When Lady told them to get lost they snuffed out their cigarettes in her mink. Without pause, Holiday told them to meet her outside, if they had any balls. At which point Holiday proceeded to beat them both unconscious with her fists. It was a bad idea to mess with Lady Day.
