“Can’t I just turn back the clock?
Forgive my sins
I just wanna roll my sleeves up
And start again”
city of origin: New York City
occupation: Homicide Detective
Jack Taylor was born into a family of witches. He never had to wonder who he was, and he never had to question his powers when they started to affect those around him. His parents, Mike and Kerry Taylor, were both witches in their own right, with abilities that they’d mastered at a young age, as did their parents, and Jack’s entire lineage dating back to the early 1400’s. With two sisters who inherited the same abilities, Jack was never shy about using his, even when his parents warned him against it. They assured him that there was so much more to witchcraft than simply convincing people to do as he pleased. Jack was receptive to it, most of the time, but he was also very independent, and he wanted to learn things on his own.
His parents didn’t clue him in to what he was a part of, only assuring him that the coven was the only way to ensure a witch’s survival when people like them were inevitably vilified and hunted by other creatures. So he did as he was told, following alongside his parents as they attended meetings, despite his apprehensions about it.
By the time he got to high school, he’d proven that he could excel in many things all at once, sports, academics, witchcraft, and even gaining valedictorian as he graduated. His parents could only encourage him to do more, to use his abilities for good. With the Clave encouraging him to do more with his powers, more that could potentially harm someone else, he drifted further and further away, until he didn’t claim it altogether by the time he finished college. He never expected it would turn into anything more, that it would end up claiming the life of his family. Eight years after being brought into the coven, his entire coven was killed, an accident that claimed his parents as well as his sisters. He was the last of his family line, and his coven.
The first time he found Chicago, he only knew that the city was filled with people like him, including some of the oldest witches known to man. It was easier to be a witch in a place that didn’t target him as an outsider, or a monster, even though he knew was less scary than most of the things he’d encountered. He got a job as a police officer, rising quickly to detective and his powers serving as a little something extra to sway the men he caught.
When the regent of his coven was murdered, Jack was just as distraught as anyone else, and he was already apprehensive of the new regent. She was young, or so it seemed, but when he discovered she was truly the first of their kind, he had nothing but respect for the women. His allegiance to his coven is unwavering, despite his connection to an original vampire that’s kept secret. He can now be found running the homicide division of the Chicago police department, a job that requires just a little bit of insanity. He never imagined his night job would be a hired killer for the coven, but he’s managed to put his abilities to good use, even if it’s in the worst way.
Jack was always the charmer, something that stemmed from his abilities. Even as a young child, getting people to do his bidding wasn’t very hard, especially once he could bat green eyes and get anything he wanted. He didn’t need his powers to do that, they were simply glad to make the little charmer smile. As he got older, he grew into his powers, and he knew when to use them, and when to steer clear. He’s fiercely protective of those he cares for, which are few and far between, and he’s been around the block enough to know that everyone has an agenda, whether they know it or not.
At one point, he used to be a man of many emotions, rolling through them just as quick as anyone could think to, due to the unpredictability of his powers. But once he came into his own, he learned to focus his emotions, and found that he had a penchant for sarcasm, and hated anyone that couldn’t see any farther than the hand in front of their face. He can be close minded at times, choosing only his way unless forced otherwise, but given the size of his heart, it’s surprising so few are actually let inside.
