✴︎  — “ Well then you’re in luck ! I absolutely fit this description, ” Sutton laughed, “ I’m sure I’m just as much work. After all, I can be quite disagreeable at times. According to my niece. Although sometimes I think she exaggerates, ” she grinned. “ If you ever need anyone to disappear, I’m your vampire. Unless I’m making someone else’s nemesis disappear. Then you might have to wait a day or two. All depends on my appetite. ”

“Excellent. Lucky me.” Jack replied with a cheerful laugh. “I’m sure she exaggerates terribly. Poor you. But I am very capable of handling disagreeable. So long as I stay off the menu. Although I am pretty sure that might get you into a wee-bit of trouble with the program.  “Does your niece live here as well?”

Henry was beginning to think this just might work.  He nodded to Jack. “Wow, that sounds excellent, thank you. In fact, even if this place isn’t available, maybe you can help me find something similar that is.”  He smiled and gestured toward the area where the other rooms were.  “Please lead the way– let’s see what we can dig up.”

“I aim to please and always happy to help out a new friend. We’ll figure it out.” Jack replied with good cheer. He picked up his coffee cup and tucked the folder under one arm. “This way.” He led Henry down the hall and into the still barren conference room, comprising a lovely table and a circle of fairly comfortable chairs. Otherwise there was nothing to speak for the room. Jack took a sip of his coffee before spreading out one large map. “Okay so this is the lake area. Tell me which side we are supposed to be looking at and then I can pull out the detail maps.”

“Jack, hi,” Henry responded as he approached his new acquaintance. “It’s good to see you too. I’m getting on well, thanks for asking.”

Jack had put Henry at ease the moment they met, but he was still trying not to get his hopes up too high about securing the property he had his eye on since almost day one. Who am I kidding? Henry thought to himself. They’re already up.

“Nice place you have here,” Henry nodded appreciatively. “As I mentioned yesterday when we spoke, I’ve had my eye on the house on the edge of town, by the lake, bordered by woods. I can’t remember the name of the road, I’m still learning my way around.” He shrugged. “It’s not quite a cabin, it’s a bit bigger than that, but it’s rather rustic. I was wondering if you knew if it was for sale. It doesn’t look like anyone lives there.” 

“Thank you. It is a little bit of a beige box to me but the rent was right. I need to add a little colour to it I think.” Jack replied with a soft laugh. “Okay ... so I pulled all the local maps of the area. I figured we could look through and see if you can spot it. Then I shall use my trusty dusty title registry skills to work on tracking down the owner.” Jack walked over to his desk and lifted up a large folder. “Shall we head into the conference room? We can spread out the area maps there.”

✴︎  — “ Yep, just one. Pretty sure there’s nothing else. I’m absolutely the worst, ” Sutton grinned, only really half joking. She nodded, “ of course. ” Sutton chuckled, “ I’m sure you have more than just one or two talents, ” she grinned. “ Well I’m certain you’ll do a great job with it. If you need help… I’m really good at customer service, ” she laughed, shaking her head, “ nah, I’m joking. I’m not really good at anything other than music. According to an ex-boss, I’m absolutely terrifying when I work in customer service. Apparently people don’t like it when you threaten to eat them when they’re being overly entitled assholes who can’t slice their own bread, ” she mused.

“Fair enough. I suppose if one has to have a companion and guard, then I want her to be the absolute worst  ... so long as she was on my side. I’m a terrible amount of work after all.” Jack replied with a soft laugh. “Good to know that I have backup in the event someone needs to be eaten.”

Jack set down the phone before heading over to the keurig to make himself another coffee. He turned when he heard the front bell give a light jangle. Glancing over, Jack nodded in greeting. “Henry. Nice to see you again. How are you doing today?”

✴︎  — “ One, perhaps, ” the vampire laughed. She hadn’t truly enjoyed herself this much with human company since Antoine had been alive. “ Perhaps, ” she echoed. She shook her head, “ nonsense, I wouldn’t be bored, and it wouldn’t matter if I was, anyways. We are supposed to look out for each other, are we not ? I would not bemoan you needing to talk or anything else. If you need support, I will support you, ” she smiled. She nodded, “ it’s a lovely sentiment. I wish I had a talent for that sort of thing. ”

“Just one? Hmmm .. well I suppose if I look really hard ...” Jack teased with a low laugh. He shrugged lightly at her kind words, still struggling with taking assistance when offered. Of course that was the point of this place, wasn’t it? “I appreciate that and I will keep it in mind. Thank you.” He grinned, “Well I have to have my one or two talents after all. Otherwise the world would be quite dull. Currently I have my eye on a run down old property at the end of town. I think it would make a really nice bed and breakfast and it’d give me something to do. To start out here.”

✴︎  — “ It’s my one redeeming quality, ” Sutton joked. She’d always admired talent — even if she hadn’t admired a person. After all, she was a fan of Wagner’s composition, but the man himself had been racist. The vampire listened to Jack speak, “ I can’t say I am particularly familiar with Canada. I haven’t made it yet. ‘ So far so good ’ is good. If you need to talk or anything, I can try to be there. I don’t always say the right thing, but I know that staying sober can be really tough, ” she smiled. “ That’s really nice. It’s always nice to see old buildings brought back to life. I always hated to see buildings that have been around for so long just fall into disrepair until someone knocks them down. ”

“I’m sure you have one or two more than that.” Jack teased with a soft laugh. He shrugged lightly. “Perhaps in the next century or two, you’ll find the time.” He cleared his throat. “Thank you. I appreciate that. I found out where AA meets and organized a sponsor so hopefully I won’t be boring you with too many soggy tales of woe. I do however appreciate the offer.” Jack tried to deflect a little, not wanting the beautiful vampire to be filing for a pairing change just yet. “I like to make the old find their glory again, or perhaps be repurposed for something entirely new.”

“I look forward to meeting her,” Henry nodded. It had previously occurred to him that he might run into an old acquaintance in town, or even his maker. Since his maker abandoned and blocked him immediately after his ‘rebirth,’ he wasn’t even sure she was alive.  He couldn’t decide if this was something he hoped for, or dreaded.  But first and foremost, he needed a permanent residence. The “pay by the day” apartment he was renting didn’t suit him.

“So Jack– I have had my eye on a cabin by the lake at the other end of town, bordered by the forest, and it doesn’t look like anyone lives there. I think it would be perfect for me. Do you know who I could speak with about buying or renting it?”

“She is worth meeting.” Jack replied sincerely. He smiled warmly at the other man. “Hmmm ... I was actually looking at deeds for that area earlier but I honestly can’t recall off the top of my head.” Jack reached into his pocket and withdrew a small, crisply new card. He held it out. “Stop by my office tomorrow and we will see what information we can track down.”

I wasn’t at all sure if you had children in your very long life to date but it seemed possible so, in that event, Happy Mother’s Day. If you did not, then have a lovely arrangement for no particular reason whatsoever.

Henry couldn’t help but laugh. “Well I am working on it, but this is all very surreal. I’ve only just arrived and I’m trying to find my feet, as it were. How do you do Jack. I’m pleased to meet you. Tell me, how does one find their other half in this town?”

“It can be rather surreal. I will admit that much.” Jack replied thoughtfully. “It takes a bit to settle in. Other half? I got an address in the mail. I popped over for a visit. I haven’t seen her much to be honest but she’s very nice. Vampire. Musician. Beautiful. If you see a petite redhead about town, that is likely her. She goes by Sutton.”

✴︎  — “ I don’t know much about her, but she has an incredible vocal range, ” she shrugged.  “ Well it’s always nice to have an excuse to show off. Kidding, I enjoy playing for people, come, ” she smiled, settling at her piano. She played through Schubert’s Erlkönig, “ I’ve always loved this setting of the poem. Can’t sing it at its original key or anything close, but it’s my favourite lied. ” she grinned.

      “ Yes, I suppose we do. Well so far I’ve felt very welcome, ” Sutton smiled. “ Sit if you’d like, tell me about yourself. ”

“A woman who appreciates range. I can admire that.” Jack replied softly. He walked along beside the beautiful woman and watched her settle at the piano. He watched her play and had to admire her tremendous skill. It wasn’t just the technical skill but the passion she clearly had for the music. He nodded at the invitation, selected a comfortable looking chair before taking a seat. “Well, a few basics. I’m originally from Vancouver, which if you are not familiar, is on the west coast of Canada. I am an alcoholic. Seven months sober after a rather brutal stint in rehab but so far so good. Oh and I work in property development. I like to refurbish the old and abandoned, turn them back into living and working spaces for everyone.”

Henry couldn’t help but laugh. “Well I am working on it, but this is all very surreal. I’ve only just arrived and I’m trying to find my feet, as it were. How do you do Jack. I’m pleased to meet you. Tell me, how does one find their other half in this town?”

“It is rather. I do feel safe though. I’m not even sure if I should but I do.” Jack replied with a soft laugh. “Oh I just got an envelope. Went to her place and we had a nice chat. Haven’t seen her since then but she was all right.”
