Evelyn Irons (1900-2000) was a Scottish journalist who acted as a war correspondent during World War II. She was the first woman to be decorated with the French Croix de Guerre for this service.

She was initially hired with the beauty page of the Daily Mail, but chose to report on the war as soon as it broke out. Despite objections regarding the presence of female reporters on the battlefield, she was one of the first journalists to reach liberated Paris, and the first female journalist to reach Hitler’s Eagle Nest. In 1935, she became the first woman to be awarded the Stanhope Gold Medal by the Royal Humane Society.

I’m pretty sure it’s safe to assume that neither Ron nor Hermione ever saw their original wands again. I find this whole business of people losing their wands quite sad, actually. As we come to learn, wands are less an instrument of magic than an extension of the user’s personality. They are symbols of belonging in the wizarding world, especially for people like Harry, Hermione and Dean, who grew up not knowing about magic. To lose something like their wands, which they have had for six years already, seems like a real loss.

Here’s the thing: if the Republicans don’t suffer significant losses in the midterms, then they will interpret this as meaning that the racism and the xenophobia and the scapegoating of Jews and muslims and transgender people are winning propositions, and they will double down on all of these things. Yes the Democrats are frustratingly mediocre, and it sucks. But things still have a LOT of room to get worse.

It is incredibly unlikely to happen, but, still, IT IS POSSIBLE - as it wouldn’t break any laws of physics. Like, do you ever think about that?? How maybe one day all the atoms in your body will quantum tunnel themselves through the floor at the same time, and you will fall through the goddamn floor??? Like, it is NOT impossible for it to happen. Or maybe one day a wardrobe, a floor above you, will quantum tunnel itself through the floor and crush you - what an amazing way to go, right? Any second now. And that’s no magic or fiction. No laws of nature would be broken. Like, do you. ever. think. about. that. at .all?.?.?.
