Creating my video

Datamoshing in my video: The datamoshing implemented I feel really made the video as it initially solely represented poorly produced news broadcasting. I did however end up changing the audio speed, and had cuts in each clip with little to no transition to add to the poorly produced effect. To datamosh I first had to trim the videos I downloaded from YouTube as they were 10-20 minutes long each. I ended up with 15 or so small clips from those three initial videos. I then datamoshed each video in Avidumux, which was actually very easy compared to the first time I did so in the Datamoshshop class. After having messed up those videos I took them to VLC and screen recorded them using QuickTime. It all ran very smoothly.

Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014: I initially wanted to use iMovie as I had never used Premiere before but after speaking to my tutors, both insisted that Premiere was the much superior program. I got the hang of it pretty quickly after Karen gave me a quick tutorial. I had a few saving issues, and even now after I've finished I'm worried about it not opening on the computers in class but overall the program served its purpose very well.

I'm happy with the way it came together, however I'm a little worried about the ending of the video. Although I want to keep the reasoning behind the video open to interpretation, I hope my intended meaning and message  translate. I included a short description just in case, and kept it quite brief in hopes that consumers already understand the positioning of this short  video. I'm hoping the question at the end really ties the video together, making the intended meaning quite clear.

I used this YouTube video as a tutorial to export my video properly. I don't have much experience creating short videos, and it's my first time using Premiere so this helped a lot!  I exported it as a H264, setting the preset to YouTube HD 1080p 23.976. I then changed the maximum bitrate (mbps) to 25, and the target bitrate (mbps) to 15. Lastly, I selected 'use maximum render quality' and proceeded to export it.

I don't think it's all lies, but it's definitely one sided. Mainstream media neglect to inform us on particular events in certain parts of the world, or if those events are broadcasted, they are short clips, usually poorly produced and difficult to understand.

I'm currently sifting through a bunch of videos I pulled from YouTube.

I'm trying to think of a way I can focus on how mainstream media manipulate consumers to see the world a particular way. I've wanted to focus on delivering a sequence of very poorly produced clips relating to crisis' in parts of the world that don't receive as much coverage as the rest, and then juxtaposition those clips with bright, well produced clips of reports that in comparison to the conflicts in Gaza/Palestine are not news worthy at all. 

I will datamosh the clips I've chosen to represent the parts of the world with lesser coverage, as I'd like the video to explore balance (or lack of) when comparing those clips with the well produced.  The video will explore how the well produced clips shift the focus off of the poorly produced, as the poorly produced are more difficult to deconstruct, and if understood, are much harder to digest. 

I feel like there's a good chance my video will be received the way I intend as nowadays people are much more cynical and aware of how the media is controlling and manipulative.

Researching for my video I found a really interesting piece entitled The Brotherhood and the manipulation of society. Carrying on from my GIF, I want my video to question mainstream media - does production manipulate our views on world affairs?  The article I found walks us through manipulation in society as a whole.

Week 10: Dirty Media

The focus in this weeks seminar was Dirty Media. We explored the potential of glitches and errors in art, focusing on Glitch art and Datamoshing. Datamoshing is the act of intentionally compressing digital video resulting in what is known as Glitch art. Glitch art is defined as bugs or errors that corrupt digital data, creating a unforeseen effect. 

In Class we looked at many examples of Glitch art and/or Datamoshing, including Kanye West’s 2012 music video and Alex Galloway’s Prepared Playstation. 

Following the discussion we looked at how to Datamosh, participating in a Datamoshshop where we were shown to do so using a short clip in editing software Avidemux. Datamoshing is practiced using compressed videos containing different video algorithms. The algorithms are known as the I-frames, P-frames and the B-frames and are used for video compression. We were advised to remove the I-frames (also known as Key Frames) as they don’t require other video frames to decode and are the least compressible, allowing for Glitch art with the least likeliness of corrupting the video to the point where it cannot be redeemed.

My first time using Avidemux for datamoshing. I had quite a bit of trouble using this software and found it confusing at first.

After finally seeing the end result I am surprised because I wonder why anyone would even want to do this to their videos.

'SLAVE TO THE ALGORITHM'

WEEK 8:

This weeks class directed us to a discussion of algorithmic art and the use of code and machine when creating imagery, rather than relying on physical entities. We began by exploring the definition of such algorithm in ‘code’ terms which is displayed within the image provided above. In dummy version or ‘simple’ terms this translates to, if something/one is a creation and an object of art and an algorithm and one’s own algorithm then they are an allegorist/ algorithmic art. Visa versa. 

We explored a large selection of conceptual artists who employ this form of ‘code’ or algorithmic art and utilise machines or digital means in doing so. These artist will be explored in some more posts following this one so stay tuned and watch this space!
