Unfortunately, Kurt Cobain was never able to hear Taylor Swiftās music because as we all know, he died tragically in 1999 of a fatal car accident that killed him. RIP. Itās a shame because had he lived, the legendary Nirvana drummer and Tay Tay wouldāve had so much in common!
Right now, you probably just did a double take. Surely, he canāt be serious. āMy favorite 80s grunge hero Kurt Cobaine⦠and pop singer Taylor Swift? Similar? This guyās a moron!ā Sorry, haters. But itās true! And you know what Taylor says, āThe haterās gonna hate, hate, hate, hate.ā
Speaking of Tayās lyrics, think about how similar both of their songs are. Letās take a look. Hereās a song by Taylor Swift.
āYou put your arm around me for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter
You are the best thing, that's ever been mineā
And hereās one by Nivrana:
āDon't call me daughter, not fit to
the picture kept will remind me
don't call me daughter, not fit to
you gotta keep em separatedā
Not convinced? Hereās another. Hereās Taylor.
āNice to meet you
Where you been?
I could show you incredible things
Magic, madness, heaven, sinā
And hereās Nirvanna.
āPleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
Blood sugar sucker fish in my dish
How many pieces do you wish?ā
Um... eerie! But not surprising. The two have had musical careers which have taken similar trajectories. Taylor of course rose to fame as a country star before switching over to pop, whereas Korrt started out in the band 311 before starting Nirvanna with Dave Grohl.
But itās not just their lyrics that are similar. Letās take a look at the two blondes and their fashion senses. Hereās a photo of Taylor Swift looking fab:
Hm, flannel. Where have I seen that before? Oh right, on a scruffy frontman of a DC-based band named Kurt Ralph Kobain! Hereās Kurt being Taylor 20 years before Taylor was Taylor.
Music and clothes aside, Swiftās kinship with Cobane goes deeper. They shared an attitude. Kurtd is often considered the creator of teen angst, with his song āSmells Like a Teenās Spirit.ā Well who embodies the āTeen Sipiritā more than Swift, who signed a record deal at age 14? Itās like Crobayne was her guardian angel. Itās almost too much of a coincidence. But itās true.
I think that itās safe to say that had he not died tragically nearly 200 years ago next week on the anniversary of his birth, Taylor Swift would have been BFFs with Kurpt Q. Krobainne of the lemgendgery grumge band The Nervernas.

Like all very cool people, I live in New York. As a cool New Yorker, I routinely see some weird, wild, and otherwise wacky shit. On a simple walk from Point A to Point B (which are the names of two different bars in Brooklyn because everything here has very cool names), itās not uncommon to come across any combination of the following: a dude jacking off right into the street, a Christian zealot yelling at me to repent or burn in hell, or āother.ā āOtherā is a catch-all for all of the things that happen which you could never anticipate. Last week, for example, I saw a motorcycle gang rip down the street on their Harleys BLASTING Coldplay. Iāve lived in New York my whole life and I still wasnāt prepared to see something like that.
But by far, the weirdest, wildest, most mind-boggling thing I see in New York is at Applebeeās. On the occasions where Iām unfortunate enough to find myself in the hellhole that is Times Square, Iāll have to walk past the Applebeeās on 42nd Street. To my continual shock, there are inevitably tourists lined up there. ...Lined up. ...At Applebeeās. ...Why? In a city with eight million restaurantsāwhere authentic culture and rich history is waiting around every corner ready to hit you in the face like the heat from the engine of a passing city bus, why would anyone, ever, for any reason choose to voluntarily dine at an Applebeeās? From Times Square, you can hop on a train in any direction and within literally five minutes be transported to authentic Chinese food, French cuisine, or some cool dining experience you didnāt even know existedābasically anything that isnāt the Times Square Applebeeās, where the food is more expensive and worse in quality than tourists are used to at the Applebeeās location back home in Nebrohmaha.
Why do people eat at the Applebeeās in Times Square? The answer is simple: People like convenience and they want whatās familiar. Even if the familiarity is mass-marketed garbage. As long as people can get a slice of apple chimicheesecake at the end, theyāre happy.
That might explain this recent article in Billboard which lists the 25 most popular clubs in the United States over the last year, ranked by attendance. Of the 25, an amazing 21 are operated by the live music giant, Live Nation, with 12 of them being House of Blues locations and five being Fillmores. Billboard estimates that Live Nation rakes in $300 million annually off ticket sales and has about 80 clubs and theaters. Jesus Christ and holy shit.
If you know anything about Live Nation, itās not news to you that they are a gigantic, dickbag corporation intent on monopolizing live music. Many small venue owners and local promoters have accused them of deliberately trying to undersell them and drive them out of business, much like Amazon takes a financial hit on book sales just to eliminate competitors.
Hereās an idea of how bad Live Nationās stranglehold is: Back in 2010, they attempted to merge with fellow live music giant dickbag Ticketmaster and wouldnāt you know it, the United States Justice Department said that was a-ok because ha ha our system works so well. But in the middle of this unholy union, the Computer & Communications Industry Association (which includes companies like Google and Microsoft) tried to stop the merger, citing that it would not āprotect competition in the primary and secondary markets for live event ticketing.ā Thatās bad. When companies that produce the computers used in every office in America and a search engine used by 9 trillion users every single day (source: Google.com) say that your company is an out-of-control money-grubbing scumbag, thatās bad news.
But Live Nation taking over the live concert circuit is nothing new. This list on Billboard is just a reminder that while weāre constantly bombarded with stories about how badly the music industry is hurting, clearly Live Nation is doing just fine. Of course they are, they own most of it. Hereās the thing though: You can only blame Live Nation for so long. Their stranglehold on live music is only going to continue to grow unless we all make a conscientious decision to avoid them. Homogenized commercialization and monopolies are all well and good for our nationās food franchises and pharmaceutical companies, but shouldnāt live music belong to the people? That was both rhetorical and overly call to armsy. The answer is yes. Yes it should. So do your part. If you are in a band, book your tours at independently operated venues. Tell your booking agent you donāt want to give Live Nation business. Book shows in basements and libraries and in the back of bowling alleys if you can. And if youāre just a regular olā concert-goer, donāt buy Live Nation/Ticketmasterās fee-heavy tickets and make an effort to avoid their locations whenever possible. They list them right here on their website.
Or you know, you can always just make it easy on yourself and go to The Fillmore or House of Blues location #00038. Maybe theyāll have apple chimicheesecake.
