There's some fierce debate going on about the demise of HMV tonight. Many will blame the rise in digital downloads, the fall in physical formats and HMV's failure in adapting their business model quickly enough. I can't help thinking, however, that the real reason behind HMV's demise are the companies who undercut HMV online such as Amazon - the companies that can do so because they fail to pay the correct amount (if any) of corporation tax, unlike HMV who not only pay corporation tax but also contribute to the country by paying National Insurance for their employees and also business rates on the shops that they rent. HMV won't be the first, and certainly won't be the last, but it smacks when the Government seem quite content to let it happen.

Smartphone users now spend more time on Instagram than Twitter.

In August, some 7.3 million people pulled up Instagram on their phones every day, compared to only 6.9 million who opened Twitter’s mobile platform religiously, according to data released by comScore, a digital market research firm. What’s more, fans of Instagram, which lets users snap, edit and share photos, spent almost 4½ hours using the app in August, compared with just under three hours for serial tweeters, who blast out short messages to “followers.”

Twitter still has more smartphone users, but not as many log in daily. The social media start-up had 29 million unique mobile visitors last month, compared with 22 million who used Instagram. Twitter also has almost 300 million total visitors — including those logging in from desktop computers — while Instagram is only on phones.

If you define yourself as a “newspaper,” social media is bad for you. You are going to lose. There is no way around that. But if you frame your world differently, the scene changes. Like the universe, journalism is expanding. AP plays a shrinking role in that universe, at the head end of the reporting process on primarily world and national news. Journalism used to be describable as “gather, order, and present” — or reporting, writing and publishing. AP lives in the first two layers, disconnected from and sometimes baffled by the rest. But that’s not the process any more. Journalism doesn’t end with publication of a story, or even necessarily begin with the reporter. Journalism now is a dynamic and continuous process that can begin with the “people formerly known as the audience” and continues after publication in a public, social interaction in which the community discusses, digests, processes, adds to, remixes and redistributes information. One-way journalism was an illusion of the 20th century. It’s over. Past tense. It was illusory anyway. Social processes existed even when we didn’t see them. Practicing journalism in this century requires social media literacy and engagement in all the layers. Yes, it’s a time suck, along with everything else. As an old copy editor once told me, “that’s why they call it work.”
