“Johnny, I’m home!” you called as you stepped into the house.

“Hey,” he answered quickly, making his way over to greet you, “Do you need help with your stuff?”

“Yes, please,” you answered, but before you even finished speaking, Johnny was already in the doorway grabbing your luggage and bringing it into the house.

“How was the trip?” he asked as he transported your suitcase and other carry-ons into the living room for you to unpack.

“It was alright… it was still work. We went to Disneyland though!” you announced excitedly, pulling out the little tsumtsum and keychain you’d chosen for him from one of your bags.

“Thank you,” he answered with a brief grin and minimal emotion, making you furrow your brows in concern.

“Is something wrong?” you asked worriedly, interlacing your fingers with his.

He let out a brief sigh before responding. “Can we talk?”

“Is it… bad?”

“Potentially…”

Following him to sit on the couch, you felt your heart rate suddenly spike and the warmth from your hands dissipate. You wanted to think your relationship up until now was problem free, but you knew deep down that the one issue you’d been suppressing all this time would eventually resurface and bite you in the ass. Had the time finally come? 

“I want to trust you…” Johnny started, and from those words alone you had a sinking feeling in your stomach knowing where this was going, “But you’re still not over your ex. I can tell.”

“I am! He and I worked things out on the trip, I sorted out my feelings and he sorted out his… We’re on good terms now!”

“So your co-worker is your ex?”

“I—” you choked up realizing you hadn’t even told Johnny that Jaehyun and you had been working together all this time…If you were being honest, you hadn’t told him anything since that first day when you found out you’d be shadowing Jaehyun for your training. Knowing you’d just dug your own grave, you decided the best thing you could do was be completely honest with him, “Yeah… he’s my mentor.”

“So the co-worker you’ve been talking about and getting rides from and all that… was him?”

“Yeah…”

You could feel your stomach folding into knots as you observed the disappointed expression on his face, his eyes fluttering shut as he took a deep breath and then let out an exasperated sigh. “I know that you’ve been having trouble getting past your relationship with your ex. I get it, it’s hard… But I really thought I made it clear to you that I care a lot about you and that I want to help however I can. My arms have always been open to you and yet, you’ve never confided in me about any of this, not even once. Don’t think I haven’t noticed how distant you’ve become or how you’d come home emotional or upset after work, and actually I knew about your situation to a small degree because Emily told me… but I wish I’d heard it from you instead. Why did you hide it from me? Do you not trust me?”

“No! Johnny, I do trust you!” you argued, a lump forming in your throat while your eyes welled with tears. “It’s just… it’s just…”

“It’s just what?”

“I was scared! That if you knew…” you trailed off, voice cracking as tears streamed down your face, “You’d get mad and leave…”

“I love you, and I don’t want us to break up… but  I need you to think about something. Are you afraid of me leaving because you don’t want to be alone? Or is it because you genuinely want me in your life? What if it was your ex instead? Do you think you’d be happier if you kept him in your life instead of me? You don’t have to answer now. I want you to really think about this before we discuss it again, and once you truly know where your heart is, I want you to make the decision.”

At that point, you were choking back sobs and sniffles, but you couldn’t do much about the tears that rushed down your face. The questions he asked were valid and if you were being really honest, you knew you couldn’t tell him with confidence you only had eyes on him and only wanted to be with him for the rest of your life. You couldn’t tell him with confidence that you had absolutely zero romantic feelings for Jaehyun. 

You gasped at the feeling of an arm around your waist, pulling you into a loving embrace that seemed to elicit even more emotions from you. “Do what you feel is best for you. I just want you to be happy.”

Johnny’s words stuck with you for the rest of the evening, and like he’d requested, you did a lot of thinking. What was it that you were gaining from Johnny? What were you offering him? What about Jaehyun? Though Johnny was the one who’d always been there for you, supporting you through thick and thin, what have you done for him? On top of all this, you still had yet to disclose to Johnny about what happened with Jaehyun on the first night of the trip and the guilt was really starting to devour you and tear you to shreds. You couldn’t even bear to think about how Johnny would react to finding out that you cheated on him. 

After hours and hours of sulking and dwelling in thoughts that only enraged your already scorching guilt, you realized you were getting nowhere with making a rational decision, given your current emotional state, so you dialed the one other person you trusted with your life to update her on the situation and get some advice at the same time.

“Hey, how was your trip?” Just the sound of her voice choked you up, knowing just how disappointed she would be in you hearing your story, but at the same time, you knew there was no one else who could give you as good advice as she could.

“Hey… so about that… Do you have time to talk? In person?” you replied in a low tone, guilt oozing from your voice much more than you intended.

“That doesn’t sound good…” she drawled out, “I’m not working today so, yeah. Did you want to come over? Or should I come to you?”

“I’ll go to your place. I’m in need of a nice long drive.”

“Alright. Text me when you’re here.”

“I will. See you soon.”

After hanging up, you were hesitant to face Johnny, but you knew it’d be rude to leave without notice, so you made your way up to the bedroom to tell him where you were going.

“Hey… I’m gonna go see Emily,” you spoke quietly, popping your head into the bedroom, where he was lounging.

“Okay,” he answered with a brief nod. “I assume you won’t be back for lunch, but what about dinner?”

“Not sure yet. I’ll let you know.”

“Okay. Drive safe.”

With that, you made your way out, blasting your music as you drove to drown out your thoughts and worries about how this conversation would go down. The fact that Emily was a very straightforward and honest person was terrifying to you, and you knew that she wouldn’t necessarily tell you what you wanted to hear; regardless of how it’d make you feel, she would tell you what’s best for both you and Johnny and you weren’t sure if you were ready to hear that.

Though the drive to Emily's house was long, this time around, it felt particularly short, robbing you of the time you needed to mentally prepare, but it was too late to back out now. You’d been running from this issue for far too long and it was about time you faced it head on.

It took all your willpower to actually get out of the car and walk up to the front door. You waited anxiously on the porch for Emily to answer, but it didn’t take very long before you heard her footsteps approach from the other side and open the door.

“Whoa, are you okay?” she greeted worriedly, observing your current state. “You look… uneasy.”

“I am,” you answered bluntly, giving a nervous chuckle as you stepped through the doorway.

“Trip must’ve not gone well, huh?”

“I guess… you could say that…”

She only nodded to acknowledge your statement as she guided you to the living room, gesturing for you to sit on the couch while she made her way to the kitchen.

“Okay. So what happened?” Emily started as she made her way back with a glass of water, placing it on the coffee table directly  in front of you.

“God, where do I even start…” you answered, letting out an exasperated sigh before beginning. “So to start off… you know how Jaehyun is my co-worker?”

“This already sounds bad…”

“Not helping!” you whined, “Anyways… so this trip was a business trip right? The number of men and women were uneven so, my boss asked Jaehyun if it was okay for us to be in the same room together since he knew we were friends, and he told him yes… without asking me first. I found out at our informational meeting about it, so I mean, I had the time to say something, but I didn’t…”

“So you guys were staying in the same room for the whole trip?”

I can’t tell you who to pick, but if there’s a time for you to make a solid decision, it’s definitely now. I think you need to weigh out the pros and cons of being with both of them and see who is genuinely better for you. Even without me saying, you can probably guess whose side I’m rooting for, but you know yourself better than I do, and you also know Jaehyun and Johnny better than I do, so only you can judge what’s best for you.”

“It’s so hard to choose…” you muttered under your breath, trying to the best of your ability to suppress the emotions that were building up inside.

“No one said it’d be easy, but for all three of your sakes, the sooner you make a decision, the better. And also, I forgot to mention, I assume you haven’t told Johnny yet about what happened with Jaehyun on the trip, so I suggest you start with that. If you can’t be transparent and honest with him, then his trust in you will be tainted more than it already is and in the long run, you’ll put a lot of strain on your relationship with him.”

“How the hell do I even bring that up?”

“I don’t know… I think you just have to do it, like ripping off a bandaid. This isn’t really something you can just squeeze into a typical everyday conversation. Just tell him, ‘Hey, there’s something I need to talk about with you,’ and then explain everything.”

“But…” you started, but the moment you even thought about the words you were about to say, you got choked up and tears started to well up in your eyes, “But what if he wants to break up with me after I tell him?”

“As much as it pains me to say it, he does have the right to say that if he really wants to. If that’s what he decides, there isn’t much that can be done about it. I’m sure with how he feels about you, I could easily persuade him to change his mind, but then his decision would be biased and untrue to his actual feelings. I can only see that hurting both of you in the end.”

“Fuck…” you groaned, finally letting it all out as you cupped your face in your hands.

“Whatever happens, I’ll still be here for you,” Emily assured, rubbing a comforting hand to the small of your back. “Take your time thinking about it tonight, alright? Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.”

Unable to make coherent sentences in your current state, you only gave a small nod in acknowledgement. If anything, you decided you should at least do as Emily had said and tell Johnny everything regarding Jaehyun, especially the situation with the hotel room. As difficult as you knew it would be to muster up the courage to tell him, you knew it was the best thing you could do in the moment to start crawling out of the deep ditch you’d dug yourself into.

Johnny greeted you upon your arrival home. He was on the couch watching TV when you walked in, and so he invited you to join him. You agreed, thinking it would help to calm you down, but it didn’t. Instead you sat there in silence, mentally preparing yourself for the talk you would have with your fiance tonight, and he seemed to have picked up on your mood, considering he didn’t try to prod or ask any questions. It made you extra nervous that the topic of Jaehyun had already come up, but you hadn’t told him then. Will he break up with you in that instant? Will he resent you forever? And what will he think of your pregnancy?

The more you thought about it, the more anxious it made you and it even tempted you to run away from the issue yet again… but you knew you couldn’t, not this time. To cope, you forced yourself not to think about it, or at least kept yourself distracted until you were actually ready to have the conversation with him.

Finally, when Johnny and you were getting ready for bed, you decided it was now or never; if you didn’t do it today, you knew you never would. It took all of your willpower to even open your mouth, but despite your reluctance, you spoke up, “Johnny, can we talk?”

“Sure. What’s up?” he answered quickly, his attention now fixated on you.

Suddenly the room felt hot, and the only thing you could hear was the thumping of your heart in your ears. Taking a deep breath, you prepared to speak, but the words were lodged in the back of your throat. “I—” you barely made out before abruptly pausing.

“Cat got your tongue?” Johnny asked, seemingly trying to lighten the mood, but it was to no avail.

“I—” you started again, but this time, a lump in your throat stopped you, “I…”

“Are you okay?” Johnny spoke up concerned, quickly shifting toward you and taking you into his arms.

“I… ch-cheated…” you finally stated, barely above a whisper. Though you’d spoken quietly, you knew he’d heard from the way he stiffened in response, and with that you completely lost it. “I’m so sorry, Johnny! I just— I don’t know what came over me! Everything just happened so fast and I—!” you blurted between hiccups, tears streaming down your face.

“Shh. It’s okay,” Johnny comforted, pulling you into him as he gently stroked the back of your head, “Let it all out, calm down, and then you can explain, okay?”

Nodding, you did as he said, first letting out all your emotions, allowing yourself to finally calm down, at least to some extent, and then you started to explain everything.

“I cheated on you…” you started once more, still sniffling in the process.

“Okay… so what happened?”

“The trip… My boss asked Jaehyun if it was okay for us to stay in a room together, and Jaehyun told him yes. I found out about it at that one meeting… the one that he texted me late in the night that there would be a meeting the next day. There was still time to say something about it before the trip, but I didn’t… so we shared a room… We had separate beds… but… we kinda… masturbated together… I was wearing my black cocktail dress and I guess it was too tempting for him…”

“Would you be happier with him?”

“I mean it was just theoretical, I didn’t mean to upset you, I’m sorry. It’s just, I can’t help but think that maybe my only purpose for being in your life was to help build you back up after your break up with Jaehyun. Maybe we aren’t actually meant to be together.”

“What?!” you burst out, tears streaming down your cheeks, “What the hell brought you to that conclusion?!”

Letting out a deep sigh, he took a brief moment before he answered. “There’s always been this distance between us because of that part of you that yearns for him. I don’t know him well enough to say if he’s better for you than me, since I’ve only heard about his bad traits, but I think now that you’ve reconnected with him, sorted everything out, and improved your mental health, maybe it’s time for you to go back to him.”

“B-but, Johnny…” you trailed off, hardly able to speak with how choked up you’d become.

“You’ve been waiting all this time haven’t you? For him? Just promise me one thing; if he ever mistreats you again, you leave him right away.”

“Are you… breaking up with me?”

“I’ve given my best for you. I love you so much… but there’s something he has that I don’t. I’m not sure what it is, but whatever it is, you’re continuously seeking him out for it. I don’t mean to come off rudely, but that’s just not fair to me after all I’ve done for you. At the end of the day though, my top priority is your happiness, and if I’m not sufficient enough to ensure that, then you should be with someone who is.”

As much as you wanted to argue back, your sobs prevented you from doing so. What was there to argue about anyway? Everything he’d said was more or less true. You did love Johnny, but there was something about Jaehyun that kept you crawling back to him every damn time. “I’m sorry….” you mumbled under your breath, still sniffling and trying to catch your breath, “I’m sorry I couldn’t love you the way you loved me.”

“Good morning,” Jaehyun greeted cheerfully while you trudged heavily to your cubicle. You couldn’t bring yourself to answer him, or even look up at him, so you continued on with unpacking your things and getting comfortable at your desk until he spoke up again. “Are you okay?”

“Trying to be,” you mumbled softly, hoping he wouldn’t hear… but of course he did.

“Is it your fiance? Did something happen with the reveal?”

“It’s a long story… and I have a lot of shit to do right now so ask me later,” you answered deadpan, not even glancing up for a second while you answered.

Jaehyun was slightly taken aback by your response, however, he got the vibe that you weren’t in any mood to talk, so he laid off the questions and left you to be. Thankfully, with the two of you having plenty of work to do, the day went by relatively quickly.
