This is not tiara related but while I was watching the inauguration today I immediately focused in on the Vice President’s pearl necklace. I’m sure everyone is surprised that I was distracted by jewelry. The necklace is by Puerto Rican jeweler, Wilfredo Rosado, and feature 11.5 mm South Sea pearls and 0.66 karats of diamonds set in 18 karat gold.
When designing the necklace, Rosado said he “thought about a woman as the first female vice president elected, who is also a person of color — that’s history. I love her strength, there is a feminine aspect of it that made me want to add a bit of glamour to that moment, so there is a special movement to the necklace.”
He saw the necklace’s “chain link as a design to represent toughness and also fashion in a way. It looks very classic in terms of execution but when you see it in person and the movement, it’s very glamorous but still tough. It’s a bold necklace, not a classic string of pearls.”(x)
I’ve admired the way she wears pearls before and how she’s made them into her signature look. There usually a little twist that sets them apart from the classic strand of white pearls. I think my favorite is the pearl station necklace (top right) but I also love the one that has little turquoises next to the pearls (bottom left). Both of those necklaces are by Californian jeweler, Irene Neuwirth.
When I was looking for pictures I noticed that she usually wears an amethyst ring and it turns out it belonged to her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris. I love seeing jewelry worn by multiple generations of women. Jewelry has meaning beyond ‘oh this is pretty’ and Kamala Harris’s choices really highlight that for me.
