but a real question and i want your opinion. something i never understood about jay's initial characterization is that they pretty much made him street rat!aladdin. there was never one hint of jafar being a petty thief and con artist so i don't understand why they made that choice. how do you think the son of a grand vizier became how he is? jafar also was a master of arcane lore and became a sorcerer so do you think jay also has any magical affinities?

BITCH ! ME ! TOO ! i literally didn’t understand why jay had such an aladdin vibe when he was first introduced. i literally thought he was aladdin and was like ‘wtf kinda au’ but once it was explained i was like … okay ? but yes we’ve spilt the tea over this and how booboo’s not even middle - eastern but it’s fine.

anyways onto your questions!

so for one i definitely disagree with how jay was made out to be a petty thief on the isle. i envisioned him as being a more professional, high - class one. like going after the kids or families of the wealthier and bigger name villains who had higher quality possessions and pulling off much bigger maneuvers and finesses so that he could either give them to his father to sell or trade for things that made he and his family more powerful in their reign. or if not for his father, then for his own personal enjoyment because i’m willing to bet that he shared his father’s emotional sadism. rather than just pickpocketing ( but i do like how good he is at the whole slight of hand thing with the pickpocketing considering that his father was also a magician in his early days and it’s amusing seeing people get distressed after not noticing theft for a good few minutes ) the only way i could see jay maybe becoming more of a petty thief for smaller, insignificant things would be to spite his father from time to time, but i don’t imagine that happens super often considering how loyal he is to him. in other words, we don’t talk about his initial characterization because it kinda sucks.

in terms of jay having magical abilities , i think it’s possible that he does ! though if he does i don’t imagine them to be super significant. i think if anything he would have been given some magical abilities to hypnotise or manipulate people like jafar did with his staff to make life easier in taking what he wants, like jafar himself was not able to do when he was his son’s age. and so maybe on the isle he used his decent abilities to divert people’s attention while he stole from them or make them forget he was ever there, etc. haven’t given it much thought though, i have to rewatch alladin n things to brush up on jafar’s history but yeah !
