I don't know if this is still an active blog or not, but I like your character design. It's very charming and rather refreshing. Sadly, the personality doesn't really match, to my eyes. From appearance alone your character seems like he'd act and sound much like the Chief from the animated film 'Road to El Dorado'. You could argue that judging by appearances is erroneous in nature and your character is your own, but I believe he would've been better with a more Bacchus nature about him. Alas.
Firts of all, thank you! Both for the compliment and the critique! I will, however, disagree with you. Even from an unbiased point of view (I do this by thinking of other characters that are not mine, and, who have almost dissonant characteristics), I think his bulkiness and his awkwardness mixed together is what makes him more unique.
Much alike what you have said, I could’ve gone with a tougher personality, or even a goofy one. I would’ve been able to pull it off, I’m certain, but I find the charm in Hawthorn’s character is the contrast between his physique (bold and strong) and his personality (awkward, almost backwards and shy).
Hawthorn is simply not aware of his looks because he acquired his strength by pulling his caravan over the years. Getting tougher was not something he sought after but something he was forced to build in order to keep live his dream and travel. I could’ve said “screw it” and not take into account the realistic need for muscles since he’s in the My Little Pony world, and, as we’ve seen in the show itself, strength doesn’t seem to depend on somepony’s physical ability. We’ve seen COUNTLESS colts and mares pulling caravans and they were all out of the same male mold, save for their hair and colour. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your POV), I chose a more realistic approach.
This choice was and still is purely arbitrary, seeing as my designs for my ponies rely more on my own creativity than the stock ideas the shows gives us. While I have absolutely zero problems with people using said stock ideas from the show, it’s simply something I do not do by nature.
His personality was, to me, the best fit for him, seeing as he grew up keeping to himself and researching plants. He wasn’t the most sociable butterfly of the bunch but he was far from being unkind! I think of Hawthorn as the shy-er male pony version of how I grew up. He’s definitely more of an introvert than an extrovert!
But still, I do appreciate these kinds of asks, because they give me a reason to spill my beans and talk about characters♥ So, thank you!
