A Modern Solution for ACL Injuries: Arthroscopy
ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injuries are a common issue, often resulting from accidents or sports-related activities. In a recent video, Dr. Atul Jagga, a consultant orthopedics, joint replacement, and arthroscopy surgeon at Jain Multispeciality Hospital in Khanna, explains a modern and less invasive approach to ACL reconstruction.
Traditionally, ACL reconstruction required open knee surgery, a procedure that could be lengthy and have a more demanding recovery. However, with the new arthroscopy method, the surgery is performed using a keyhole procedure with a camera.
Here's how the procedure works:
A camera is inserted into the knee through a small incision.
A new ligament, typically taken from the patient's own hamstring or peroneal tendon, is used to replace the torn ACL.
A special screw holds the new ligament in place. This screw is designed to dissolve into the bone within six months.
One of the most significant advantages of this new technique is the swift recovery time. According to Dr. Jagga, patients can walk on the same day as the surgery and begin bending their knee the very next day. They can resume normal activities within 10 to 15 days, and athletes can return to their sport in as little as three months.
This arthroscopic method represents a major advancement in treating ACL injuries, offering patients a faster and more efficient recovery process.
