Jains form less than one percent of the total Indian population in the country. For centuries, Jains were known as the traders and merchants who deal in different kinds of business. Jainism is mostly followed by the twenty-fourth and the last Tirthankars called Lord Mahaveera. Mostly Jains are found in the region of Gujarat and Rajasthan and is surrounded by the different pilgrimage place there. Lord Mahavir taken birth in the family of ikshvaku Dynasty, he was that time prince called Vardhamana, the son of King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. He was born in 599 B.C on the thirteenth day of the rising moon according to the Nirvana samvat calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar he was born in the month of march-April which is celebrated as Mahavir jayanti today. Most of the historians agree that he was born in the Kshatriyakund in the kingdom of Vaishali which is in modern day Bihar. In the age of 30 he renounced his royal life and devoted himself to the task of discovering the meaning of existence. At the age of 42 he started enlightenment and spent the rest of the life meditating and preaching Jainism.
Jainism rest on a real understanding of working on Karma, which effects the soul and extinguishing action and the soul release. According to Jainism, the soul is a living substance which combines with different kinds of non-living matters. The Jains rest on complete inactivity and absolute nonviolence against living beings. It is been evident by the Jain monks and nuns who cover their face just because they cannot inhale small micro-organisms. It is for the same reason all the practicing Jains try to remain vegetarians.
The Jain community has been evolved into two divisions- the Digambara or “sky-clad” monks who don’t wear clothes and the other Swetambara or “white-clad” monks who wear the clothes with a bowl for collecting the food. For centuries Western and southern India has been Jain stronghold. In the mid 1990’s there were about 7 million Jains, mostly in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Karnataka conventionally a stronghold of Digambara in the Jain community.
Though the Jain shrines with images of various Tirthankars, yet they are not worshiped but remembered and revered. Daily activities of Jain include meditation, bathing the images, offered flowers to images and light lamps or incense sticks in front of their god. Jains also participate in the Hindu or Muslim festivals but they do not compromise in their fundamental path. The five major events of Lord Mahavir which Jainism celebrates is- conception, birth, renunciation, enlightenment and the final release after death.
