It was a cold and snowy night and I was in my apartment working on my graduate thesis when I suddenly began to think about my ex-boyfriend, Byron. I met Byron Robertson back when we were still in undergrad. He was in one of my classes one semester and would always sit beside me and participate in small talk with me and another student. I assumed he was straight until he asked me if I was single and then proceeded to give me his number. We went out on a date later that same week and had sex for the first time two days later. The relationship lasted a little over three years and was over by the time I was in graduate school.
      âIf you need some dick, then get you some dick,â my best friend Trey said to me over the phone.
      âBut Iâm not even sure if heâs single,â I said back. âWhat if heâs with somebody and Iâm asking him to cheat? Iâd be a hypocrite.â
      âKingston, everybody knows sex with the ex can be some of the best sex you ever have. If heâs with somebody then make it clear that itâs just a booty call.â
      âI donât want it to just be a booty call.â
      âSay what now?â
      âNo, I donât mean like that. I want it to be a one-night stand but I donât want him to treat me like a piece of ass. I wanna be held and kissed. I wanna make love like we used to. I want him to spend the night. Am I asking for too much?â
      âNo. I mean, if heâs not in a relationship with someone else. If he is then yeah, youâre asking for quite a bit.â
      âHe probably wonât even do it.â
      âBoy, please. Youâre acting like you didnât have that man begging you to keep his sorry ass five months ago.â
      âItâs really been five months? Damn, it feels more recent than that.â
      âThatâs because youâve been so busy with that damn job and finishing graduate school. For the rest of us, itâs been five months.â He laughed and then quickly said, âOoh, Reggieâs fine ass is knocking at my door.â
      âYou called Reggie over? I thought you said heâs too rough?â
      âHe is and tonight I need a roughneck. Iâll talk to you later, Kingston.â
      âGoodnight, Trey.â I ended the call and laughed to myself as I resumed working on my thesis.

      Iâd be lying if I said I didnât miss making love with Byron. He was easily the best lover Iâd ever had. The sex was never a problem with us. Our problems had to do with his failure to make a convincing commitment and me not finding enough time to spend with him. We did argue a lot but we were in love with each other. Still, I didnât want to give it another try because once I moved on from someone then that was it. I never looked back. And that night wasnât going to be about looking back. It was only going to be one night. So, with that in mind, I went ahead and called him.
