Dally’s death perfectly encapsulates his life. To an outside perspective he died because he broke the law. He was a 'hoodlum' who died pursuing a life of crime. To outside perspectives, that's who he was: a heartless kid who broke the law. But really, he died for love. He died because he couldn’t live on without Johnny, the only person who truly knew him. Johnny saw that Dally wasn’t just a criminal, but a broken kid.
i LOVE the parallel writing whenever Pony says “dally never talked like that” and it’s only when Dally is worrying about Johnny
Dallas winston and his soft spot for his johnnycake will always be special to me
Dallas Winston is not entirely mean and uncaring. Even though he acts tough, he isn't mean around the gang. Yes, he’ll beat them up, but that's not out of dislike, just that violence is the only solution he knows. Pony as a narrator can’t see that he actually cares about the gang. Dally literally takes care of Pony, goofs off with everybody, and has a genuine close friendship with Johnny.
At the church, Dally hits pony on the back and pony collapses, Dally thinks he killed pony and just thinks "gosh darn"
When johnny dies however, dally immediately blames himself even though it wasn't his fault and is so upset by it he becomes suicidal and kills himself.
All Dally cares about is his ego, how tough he can look, and tries to get people to fear of him. Violence is all he has been taught. The only other thing he cares about is Johnny, and ten times in the book he sacrifices his ego for him.
Dally worships Johnny so much that Johnny is now the only thing Dally needs. Johnny’s death was so hard on him because he didn’t just lose his closest friend, he lost the person he revolved his life around.

I think johnny is 17 or just about to turn 17. Six months prior to the book he gets beat up, specifically when he is 16, and I assume that was at least a couple months after his birthday

Dally’s worship for Johnny is most obvious in the drive through scene. Johnny tells Dally he still cares about his parents and Dally gets offended by this. I think in this moment Dally is feeling two things:
They have a mutual feeling of being seen by the other, and Dally worships Johnny so much that he is the only thing Dally needs in life. When Johnny says this, he could be interpreting is as he isn't enough for Johnny. Why does Johnny need his parents when he has Dally? Dally doesn't need his parents, Johnny is enough for him
Johnny and Dally have very similar experiences especially with their parents. Dally in an attempt of protecting Johnny from heartbreak, wants him to forget about his parents because that's what Dally did, and he thinks it's the right thing to do.
Johnny and Dally’s relationship, to me, is kinda like “I’m not gonna judge you cause I’ve done/been through worse”
It’s nice, having someone who doesn’t see you through the same “mentally ill” lens that everyone else does. Someone who doesn’t judge your emotions, cause they can relate—- it makes you feel less alone and more human yk
Johnny & Dally being the only two people who see the best in one another and the other’s true self, them feeling so comfortable and understanding of each other
modern day parry where Darrel and Paul meet in college and all their respective friend groups are convinced their buddy’s “boyfriend” is made up.
Like sureeee Darrel, you do have a rich boyfriend who is super tall, buff, handsome and likes playing football with you! He’s in a frat? He’s superrrrr cool and popular? Yeah, we all believe you, pal.
And for sure Paul, your hot greaser boyfriend who is a bad boy but is also so sweet and kind, and is a provider is totallyyyy real. He DEFINITELY has two real, living brothers to take care of, that’s why we can’t meet him. What are their names again? Ponyboy and Sodapop? Mhmkay.

i'll be real i get tired of the "darry is the gang dad" thing. like yes the gang all look out for each other but... darry's not even a father figure to sodapop who he's legally the guardian of. and as much as it pains me to admit as a person who loves mixed up family dynamics, by the end of the story the three brothers like... they give up the parents-and-son roles and go back to all being brothers and equals. sure theres a level of like darry is the legal authority but theyre all. equal to each other. it feels like a disservice to that character development to be like actually darry parents the whole gang. they are all his children. he makes their lunches and spanks them if they stay out late. you know what i mean?
while pony sees darry as a (forced upon him) father figure, the rest of the gang dont! Especially when soda and darry were probably very close as brothers before their parents passed, and had an established relationship as such.
You cant tell me steve or dally of all people, who are maybe 2-3 years younger than darry, are going to let darry boss them around the same way he does to pony

jally is such an integral part of the book to me. I don't understand how some people can come out of reading the novel thinking they don't at least have a very close relationship
