Darry was oblivious despite how many times pony has came home wearing one of curly's signature belts

Dally finds it cute although keeps a close eye on Curly. The Shepards are hoods and he's not gonna let pony get fucked over... "It's not like I really care though." He does in fact really care.

Tim Shepard has had to track down pony multiple times because of how many times he's left his stuff in curly's room.

The first time curly went to the reformatory while they were dating it hit pony hard. (especially since curly was dragged there for beating up a soc who tried to jump pony) Since Dal was the only one who knew a lick of an idea about pony and curly's relationship because of how many times he'd see pony at the Shepard house he ended up making extra trips to the Curtis house to make sure pony was okay (that meant doing a forceful search and a pep talk. That's what he went through when he was in NY and was feeling bad. He doesn't know better)

Curly and pony spent every day for a week together after curly got out just gossiping about the people in the reformatory and how crazy dally was acting

Curly has started to grow his hair out ever since pony has expressed interest in it. Not too long though.

The only reason Darry found out was because he came home early with the rest of the gang and lots of cupcakes (I think you already know they're chocolate) from pony's favorite bakery on his birthday.

When Darry walked in Pony and curly were on the couch with one of curly's longer coats draped over them and they were mid makeout

Darry literally chased curly back to the Shepard house (after he set down the cupcakes)

Tim and him had a not so friendly interaction about reigning in his stupid, hellion, hoodlum brother and perhaps a shove or two.

"We already have enough gang members in our circle. For god's sake, Soda is already running around with dally I don't need my other kid brother running around with yours." Pony could feel that Darry still had a good amount of soc in him.

Ponyboy was mortified and profusely apologized to Tim. Tim suggested he should be trying to make amends with darry and curly, not him.

Pony snuck a cupcake to curly.

Pony was grounded for the rest of the week.

Pony had only ever had cigarettes before curly let him have a hit of his blunt.

Pony underestimated how strong it'd be so he took a drag that lasted at least a minute (if it was a cigarette he'd be fine). He ended up throwing up multiple times.

Curly brought(carried) him to Tim for help

That doesn't mean pony didn't keep smoking blunts or letting curly shotgun smoke to him.

If anything curly started making pony let him shotgun him smoke so he could help control the dose

It wasn't like pony disliked him doing that. Quite the opposite actually.

Curly has asked if pony wanted to get closer with the Shepard gang.

That triggered one of pony's "I wish we were more than greasers and socs" monologue.

Curly has specifically learnt to massage just so he could massage pony's legs after a track meet.

You think YOUR girlfriend steals a lot of your hoodies? Pony deeply believes that curly's hoodies are joined property

Pony accidently fell asleep in curly's bed after school one day. He and curly woke up at 5am to Darry intaragating Tim about where pony was

When pony finally got a shirt on and walked out of curly's room to the living room Darry had stopped fighting Tim and resorted to sitting on the ground and crying quietly. His face was paler than usual.

As soon as Darry spotted pony he rushed over and hugged him

"I thought you ran away or got fucked up by some soc. Are you okay?"

"Yeah I'm fine," Pony mumbled

"What were you doing here?" Darry asked but found the answer himself. Curly was standing right at the doorway but slightly hidden behind the frame.

"Darry, I just fell asleep."

"Okay. Do you have everything?"

Pony just nodded and started walking to the front door. Curly reluctantly headed back to his room.

"Darryl," Tim spoke up again "Ponyboy is safe here. Do you really think I'd hurt him? And plus, while Curly might not be the most well behaved have you seen how he treats Pony? Have you seen how they look at eachother... Just let em' be."

Darry didn't respond to Tim.

He turned to pony "at least warn me before you run off with Curly. I don't need to have to worry about where my kid brother is at all the time," Darry paused "you can stay here tonight if you want just be back by 9am tomorrow."

These were rlly fun to write.

the persecution of lefthandedness is insane to think about because it was so intense for so long, in some places still is, without any clear profit motivation. sheer love of the game. as late as the 70s at least they were smacking my stepdad's hands for it with a wooden ruler at school, to this day he's in weird ambidexterity situation where he's not great with either side and notably clumsy due to poor hand-eye coordination. just wtf

It is fascinating to me that people also think of handedness as an example of bigotry that just...went away. As you note, it...hasn't in some places. I know people who grew up in the mid-late 90s who still had this problem.

But also, and this is really important to keep in mind regarding bigotry that still causes in many ways larger problems, that the structural problems are not actually fixed.

If you go to any computer lab or public library, the mice will be on the right side of the computer. Sometimes they can be moved. Sometimes they can't. Many computer mice are curved to only fit in right hands.

It is impossible to find lefthanded scissors without going to a specialty store, because most scissor makers don't even make them. And it's not just a matter of grip; the slicing side of the blades is obscured if you use righty scissors in your left hand, so your cut is off.

All those signing pads with the little chained styluses? Almost always on the right side, often not even long enough to stretch to the left. Makes signing for lefties extremely difficult.

I caused actual muscular problems in college having to twist around in order to write at right-handed desks in college when there weren't enough lefty desks--and there never were. Some classrooms didn't even have a single one.

I could go on.

But the point is, bigotry isn't just a mindset shift. People can't just decide they're not bothered by that particular difference anymore and everything's fine, because society is still structured and designed to cause problems for marginalized people. And they're never even going to notice all the little ways their life is bent to convenience them that inconveniences others.

When kiddo was learning to write, their teacher—who was a beautifully kind, caring, compassionate person who even thanked me for making them aware of certain kinds of left/handed supplies, because their new toddler was a lefty and they’d never even thought about it—was teaching the kids a method for word spacing that involved placing their free index finger down at the end of each word and then writing the next one.

Pause for a moment, especially if you’re right-handed—and I’m being serious here, physically do this if you have two functioning arms and hands—and grab a writing tool in your left hand. Now place your right index finger down and try to start writing a word next to it.

Yeah. Great technique, huh? Really convenient and comfortable and easy. 🙃

I sent in a small baggie of small popsicle sticks I’d custom painted for them and labeled with their name for kiddo to use instead, but ultimately they stopped because it wasn’t as convenient when nobody else had to get something out.

Writing in English is difficult enough when you’re left-handed (most of our letters are designed with pull motions, but lefties must push), but even other foundational basics are made more difficult than they have to be, because their needs aren’t considered, even in situations where overt hostility isn’t intended.

Even now, in an older grade, they’re now all sharing a lot of the supplies, but my kiddo has their own pair of labeled lefty scissors they keep in their personal cubby. Teacher was 100% chill with me sending them in, but didn’t even consider to take the step further when I’d asked about whether or not they had them to just… get some for all the lefties. I know there are other kids, know some of them personally. (I made a set of writing spacing sticks for the single one that I knew of back in 1st grade.)

Regarding computer mice? Kiddo had standardized testing last year. They do it on chromebooks now at their school. They did their entire first day with the track pad instead of the mouse, because none of the teachers proctoring or assisting even knew you COULD switch the sides/toggle a setting to switch which button was the dominant select. We happened to have one at home thanks to remote learning during Covid’s early days, so that night we sat down together and found the setting ourselves so they could fix it the following day. But on a student account at school, they couldn’t change that setting. And? None of those teachers knew enough about technology to be able to override it. So even when I went above and beyond and personally sought out the skills and tools to help my child level the playing field on their own, the teaching staff was so unaccustomed to even considering this as a need or problem, that they weren’t able to remove the incredibly basic barriers to a fair schooling experience.

And this is honestly a good school, with staff that care and work hard and take 99% of bigotry concepts very seriously, teach about truth and compassion and how to recognize at this kid level a lot of the basic seeds that can grow into hate and hurt and also healing and helping. But the fact that left-handed needs are different? It is so ingrained to default to right-handed layouts that even left-handed staff don’t conceptualize these problems, because they were taught the exact same way.

you wanna know what else he is. a cool character thats got a lot to him that gets left up to interpretation.

we only see what dally is like from ponyboy's perspective but he describes him from a sense of that he's similar to a brother whilst is also slightly intimidated by him, but also is trying to remember him and help other people remember him.

dally was described as being cold and mean (?) but we don't really know why that happened. maybe it happened before he went to tulsa or when he was in new york and got involved in the murder wrap or when he got to tulsa or when he was 10 and getting out of jail. we don't know what background he comes from other than likely neglect and lack of support, like how he said "my old man don't give a hang whether I'm in jail or dead in a car wreck" and I dont remember the rest of the quote. maybe the lack of support indirectly affected him and made him into the cold person he was in the outsiders. the only time that dally was really sort of emotional was when johnny suggested turning himself into jail. he doesn't want johnny to turn into him, doesn't want the skittish kid to turn into a person whos unloving to the world.

he sees ponyboy and johnny like family/brothers/somethingthatsfamilialwhoevenknowsatthispoint, especially johnny. the second he's dead, dally just runs out. he doesn't seem to fully process it nor accept it, and it seems like he ran through a lot of denial. nobody knows what he was thinking in that moment, and likely nobody ever will. i like when writers write what they think he was doing in between the time when he left the hospital and died, because it was hours or something, but it was a long time.

so, in general, hes not just "so hot" he's also a sort of interesting/complex character. i had more thoughts but forgot them.

Don't cry:

3 cans black beans

1 package of sausage OR small ham cut up in bite size pieces

Add onion powder and beef bullion

High heat for 4-5 hours in a crock pot or other slow cooker

Add 1 1/2 cup cooked white rice

You now have rice and beans (~5 people's worth) :)

To make better, try it with:

A Guaraná!! Best soda ever 👌

Farofa! A seasoning salt basically (i like the bacon kind)

Pão de queijo (see also: cheese bread) get it frozen or make it yourself, either way is good :)
