I’m sorry but
Seriously, now that I think about it, is there like a single scene in the movie where these two aren’t standing by each others’ side? That, for me, is just like… Woah.
And I’m not talking as a shipper now. Seriously, think about the friendship those two must’ve built. Because as we know Dwalin and Balin are a few of the oldest dwarves in the company. They’ve basically known Thorin since the day he was born. They’ve served under his grandfather, his father, and now Thorin. Without a question, knowing very well that this quest might kill them.
Just. The loyalty that must lie within.
I honestly loved Dwalin and Balin since the first time I saw them interact with Thorin for this very reason, and I’ve loved them more and more every single time I’ve re-watched The Hobbit. Because Jesus, this guy is the only beacon of hope not only for their people but them personally as well. In their life, Thorin is basically the only one who shines bright enough to end the reign of Smaug the Tremendous and make their people prosper again. I can’t even deal with how far they would go for Thorin, and how high the king himself seemingly holds the two. Because do you see him interacting with any other dwarf as much as he does with Dwalin?
And who was the one who knew where the hay Thorin was when Gandalf asked, all the way back in Bilbo’s Hobbit Hole? No surprise, Dwalin. There’s no denying that though Thorin no doubt loves his nephews to no end, Dwalin has to be considered his most trusted friend. Well, that’s what I’ve concluded, anyway.
I would love to see the relationship between not only Dwalin and Thorin but Balin as well be studied further in the movies. And if that wont happen, well, my headcanons sure as Hell will never die.
And seriously, just the scene in the Hobbit where Azog beats Thorin down and Dwalin and Balin scream and shout, helpless? That for me was heartbreaking. I’ll tell you right now, when the line of Durin goes out, Dwalin and Balin will be the ones I’ll be crying for, not the three Durins.
((Asked Graham about the friendship of Dwalin and Thorin at HobbitCon and I noticed that Graham has spent a lot of time with Richard in real life. He said that the actors became somehow the characters. Richard and Graham were always together like Dwalin and Thorin. It’s so amazing. I really love this friendship.))
Just think of Dwalins face when Thorin is killed.....
