They Cast Their Nets In Galilee
My friend Darrell introduced me to the Anglican hymn, “They Cast Their Nets In Galilee.” It so beautifully carries the Gospel narrative by St. Mark of Jesus’ call to the fisherfolk: Simon and Andrew, James and John.
Darrell writes,
I think the more traditional tune is called Georgetown. However, this bautifully haunting reimagined music setting for the text sounds fresh to me. Bits of its melodic progression call to mind the lovely Lalo Schifrin title theme from the 1967 film, “The Fox.”

“The Cast Their Nets In Galilee” (1924, William Alexander Percy) “They cast their nets in Galilee just off the hills of brown; such happy, simple fisherfolk, before the Lord came down. “Contented, peaceful fishermen, before they ever knew the peace of God that filled their hearts brimful, and broke them too. “Young John who trimmed the flapping sail, homeless in Patmos died, Peter, who hauled the teeming net, head-down was crucified. “The peace of God, it is no peace, but strife closed in the sod, Yet let us pray for but one thing— the marvelous peace of God.”

As Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, the crowds were quoting major portions of Psalms 118:25-26 Save us, we pray, O Lord! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Why do we not find the word Hosanna in the passages in the Psalm text? Well, we do and we don’t. Matthew, Mark, and John chose not to translate it into Greek but transliterated it which means they wrote it down the way it sounded. And other translators have done the same so we are hearing the phrase in the original Aramaic. What the people were saying was, “Save us, we pray. You are blessed because you are going to save us from Roman domination”. It was both praise and prayer. Originally an appeal for deliverance it had come to mean “Joy and praise for deliverance granted or anticipated.” In Jesus the age-old cry, "Lord, save us, " has become the glad doxology, "Hosanna, " which equals: "Praise God and his Messiah, we are saved.” Truly the word Hosanna is the perfect word for us today in the midst of our crisis. We also cry out “Save us Lord we pray.” https://www.instagram.com/p/B-sVOCsAzOcula14gmAbdy5uPLVM71vuVxUHHk0/?igshid=123sj6nkw2iri
Lord, Make Me an Instrument (Adapted for Global Health Crisis)
Lord, Make Me an Instrument (Adapted)
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is fear, let me sow love, Where there is isolation, friendship, Where there is panic, faith, Where there is despair, hope, Where there is darkness, light, And where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may Not so much seek to be healthy as to heal, To be comfortable, as to bring comfort, To be loved, as to love; For it is in Christ’s giving that we receive, And it’s in his hands that we are made clean, And it’s in his death that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
