A 19 year old neurodivergent transmasc who wants a chance like anyone else. This future journalist wants to bring social issues and more to the attention of the people, so we can all live in peace!
Hello everyone! My name is James and I'm a 19 year old soon-to-be college freshman. I am going to be attending Winthrop University at the start of the Spring 2026 semester and plan to major in mass communications with a specialty in journalism! I am a transgender male with a love for writing and the arts in general! I do theatre in my spare time, while also being a board member at my local community theatre! Since I started in 2022, I've been in multiple junior and adult productions as an actor, stagehand, up in the light booth running spotlights, or simply just ushering! As much as I love performing, I find it just as fun to tell a story by... you guessed it, writing!
I primarily made this account as a side blog for whatever my brain could conjure up, but then I forgot about it (as one does when they're busy). As I write this, I am just days away from moving to my college dorm to start my journey in postsecondary education. So what do I do to prepare myself and keep myself busy? Start a journalism blog, of course! Well... sort of.
See, I have no experience with reporting, but I do love to write. Whether it be essays, fanfiction, or even a musical, writing gives me an outlet to persuade, inform, or even just entertain myself and create a new world different from the one we live in now. I'd love to hear tips from fellow mass comms/journalism students, those who have made a career out of journalism, or just writing advice in general! I also want to get back into the habit of properly researching events. Feel free to use the ask box to request events for me to research/write about. I'm pretty good at informative and opinion pieces, so I think I'll start out with those.
Before I go, here's some more about myself!
I am neurodivergent, being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and sensory processing disorder at the age of 5 and moderate inattentive type ADHD at the age of 18. I also struggle with many of the conditions/symptoms that come with it, like Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria and Pathological Demand Avoidance.
I struggle with depression and anxiety.
As a kid, I wanted to be a firefighter or a chiropractor. As I started to go into high school, I wanted to be a screenwriter before settling on radiology. I tried some pre-requisite courses over the summer and burnt out fast. Now, I'm trying the mass comms track!
I struggled to hold down a job for a while. My first job was McDonalds. After that, I briefly worked at Burlington. Currently, I'm employed with Lowes Foods! Although I'm leaving for college, I will hopefully be working there again over the summer or during breaks when I'm back home with my parents.
My main account is @thememeablelifeofjames
I'm currently in the works of getting voice actors for a passion project based on my longest running fanfiction. I am also a beginner voice actor in my own right. I've only been casted once in a project still ongoing, but I hope to get more roles as time goes on!
That's all for me! I will update this as time goes on! Again, feel free to request topics for me to research/write about in the ask box!
Hi everyone!! So sorry I've been neglecting this blog! College has been really busy and with finals coming up, I've just been focused mainly on school. In other news, I've got volunteer work!! I'm a staff writer for my friend's upcoming blog The Writer's Corner! It launches in May, but we have social media accounts for it, which I will link here! It's also with this that I may post articles from there onto here when the blog launches! This will range from research articles from topics that I enjoy to narrative articles talking about myself and my identity! I hope you guys would consider supporting the blog because my friend has worked super hard on it. Plus, we're always looking for more staff writers and even article readers!
Can you do some research on omegaverse and its impacts?
Omegaverse and Its Impacts
WARNING! This contains NSFW topics. If this is not your thing, scroll away now!
Before we look at bigger picture about the impacts the Omegaverse genre has had on fandom as a whole, there are some general terms we must define. These come from a multitude of sources, with each definition being summarized based on commonalities I find. Firstly, in order to understand the dynamics each fanfiction has, we must discuss the sexes.
Omegaverse is a notable part of modern fanfiction. Known for its sex-heavy content and secondary gender identification, it has taken websites like Archive of Our Own, Fanfiction.net, and Wattpad by storm. Known for its wolf-like hierarchies and systems, the genre got its start in 2010 in the Supernatural fandom. This fic featured actors Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles in what is now known as Real Person Fiction (RPF). The fandom's previous fan works were known for their werewolf and knotting kinks. In fact, werewolf fanfiction was an excuse for people in the Supernatural fandom to write smut about male pregnancy (also called mpreg). Now, the omegaverse has become an alternate universe (AU) with both SFW and NSFW works despite the genre being best known for its smut fics. It has since expanded with sub-sexes, such as Gammas, Deltas, Sigmas, and Betas. I will only be covering betas for the sake of the prompt only covering general and well-known aspects.
Primary sexes work the same as one does in real life. These consist of male and female most of the time, but there are exceptions in which someone may have both reproductive organs. There are also rarer cases of dual-sexed individuals. "You may find fan works tagged with 'intersex' to describe this kind of Omega genitalia, but the community is purposefully moving away from that terminology because it fetishizes intersex folks" (Winters, par. 24). While this statement talks about omegas, this can be applicable to just about any secondary sex classification. Secondary sexes, unlike primary sexes, is where the categories of alpha, beta, and omega came from. Now, it's time to understand each secondary sex.
Alphas are commonly the most territorial and dominant secondary sexes. They exhibit knots and go into ruts. In a rut, an alpha goes through a period of time (typically 3-5 days) where they become more possessive and territorial than normal. While this happens often after a mating session, this is more of a protective state in which alphas do not require a mate to have. I will explain knots in a little bit. The alpha sex is not limited to primary sex. Males and females can be alphas.
Omegas are at the bottom of the hierarchy. These are individuals that are commonly the most submissive and least territorial. They experience heats, which are a 3-5 day period where an omega experiences increased sexual arousal and become more fertile, and have a womb/womb-like structure. Omegas can also be both male and female. Omegas are often common amongst characters who are transgender.
Betas are the ones in the middle. They do not possess biological/reproductive urges of alphas and omegas, but they can detect scent and scent others. Betas can be male or female. There are two types of betas: Beta-A and Beta-O. One has more alpha characteristics, while one has more omega characteristics. In other words, betas are 'normal.'
Now that we know the classifications, we can get into the NSFW aspects. If this is not your cup of tea, I recommend either clicking away here or scrolling down a couple paragraphs (I will specify when this talk ends). Now, time to go through sex-ed: Omegaverse edition.
In order for an alpha and omega to be able to have sex, an omega goes into heat while an alpha goes into a rut. Omegas and Alphas release pheromones, or scents. When an omega goes into heat, their pheromones change scent to easily attract an alpha. From there, an alpha has the opportunity to claim a mate. "During heats, Omegas are also susceptible to a “claiming” or “marking” bite by an Alpha. This bite, located on the throat, scent gland, or the nape, puts the Omega under the Alpha’s power. Often, the bite protects Omegas from other Alphas’ commands; in some settings, they make sex physically painful or nauseating with anyone but the claiming Alpha. The permanency of the bite varies by setting; in some works, bites only become permanent after multiple instances, while others depict it as a one-and-done deal" (Winters, par. 35-36). Biting doesn't always happen, but when it does, the Omega is now owned.
Bites also typically establish a “bond” between Alpha and Omega. It may be as literal as giving the parties telepathy or as metaphorical as the two parties feeling compelled to be together.
During my explanation of alphas, I mentioned exhibiting knots. What does this mean? A knot is a bulge of muscles at the base of an alpha's penis. It swells when the alpha is either erect or pre-orgasm. This is to keep the alpha and omega from separating during and after ejaculation to ensure that conception occurs. These knots typically last from 30 minutes to an hour. Sounds painful, huh? Not as much when slick is involved! Slick is self-lubricant made by omegas when in heat. This is an omega exclusive thing and can maybe only happen to an alpha if they are bitched to an omega. Sounds like an insult, but that's a real term.
Bitching is when an alpha is turned into an omega and vice versa. This can happen both consensually and non consensually. This has caused a lot of pushback from some fanfiction writers and readers. While in the Western heterosexual script men are seen as the active initiators of sex and women as passive gatekeepers (Ménard and Cabrera 2011), the Omega’s mating cycle or ‘heat’ in A/B/O fiction complicates these roles. Omegas in heat are often seen as the initiators of sex, though in a parallel with the Western male sexual script, Alpha males are often represented as unable to control themselves around Omegas in heat. This is variously presented as a 20 biological inevitability or a social construct, but in both cases serves to further underscore the power imbalance between Alphas and Omegas" (Popova, pg 19). This imbalance is the line of consent. In the aspects of dubious consent in some cases of bitching, some may compare this to a "dark romance," seeing as many Omegaverse fics takes the form of romance novels. "Becoming aware of a subliminal desire like attraction towards the same gender—especially for someone who experiences internalized homophobia—is a complex situation and can make the boundaries10 of consent confusing. Dub-con fics impose on those developing boundaries, implying that there is an expected submissiveness from one or more characters and that the sex can still be enjoyable, even if one party was not originally interested in it; it implies that the trans/non-binary readers (who identify with one of these protagonists) should expect this aggressive form of sex, and that they should just say 'yes' when being pressured, inadvertently harming the very people these fics are supposed to represent" (Seifrit, pg. 46). These fics can stereotype transgender people into being sexual deviants. Seeing the state of the world now, I don't think this should be the case (speaking from a trans person myself).
Finally getting into more of the impacts, the Omegaverse also showcases a lot of power inequalities in both legislation and hierarchies. "Laws may exist that protect omegas from discrimination and/or harm, and may be very harsh on those who hurt omegas. On the opposite end, omegas can legally be the property of an alpha, their pack or their family. These may exist in the same universe- with a distinction between free omegas and claimed/owned omegas. In some universes, it is alphas instead who are treated as property of their omega, pack or family, and in some both alphas and omegas are property or under the guardianship of betas" (Fanlore). Some fics involve real-life parallels to social inequalities, such as legislation for and against medications and even classism. "Being an omega was no cakewalk, while equality movements had changed the laws in the last century, discrimination was still present. Old way thinking and stereotypes still surfaced from time to time and it was hard when someone would off handedly suggest Jensen belonged under someone, under an alpha, even a beta, just under" (Miss_Lv, 2011). This is an example of an omegaverse fanfiction bringing attention to the inequalities put into the worldbuilding. For the early 2010s, it parallels what people experience in the modern day.
For the final impact, let's talk healthcare and suppressants. These omegaverse exclusive medication helps suppress heats and scents. According to Fanlore, "Heat & rut suppressants usually exist, but may be hard to access, especially for those with a bonded mate and even more so for omegas. Scent blockers are more common and typically come in the form of patches and deodorants which go over the scent glans, they may also server a dual purpose of suppressing heats and ruts. Birth control is common but condoms may not work as well for alphas with a knot." This directly parallels the difficulty for AFAB individuals to get abortions/birth control due to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. I should note that when I mean AFAB individuals, I do not intend to be transphobic. I am aware of trans men (and maybe intersex people?) being able to conceive. I am simply talking about people who have a womb that allows them to give birth.
This is getting extremely long as it is for a general bit of research. If I got anything wrong, I am open to being politely corrected!
