“That’s it, I’m booking the pitch for 6am till 6pm practice this weekend. Time for quidditch boot camp.” James said with exasperation.
Sirius rolled his eyes in return and gave James a rough nudge with his elbow as well. “Sure, some people read for fun, but not you. Not unless that fun includes flirting with bookworms.” Sirius put his feet up on the table, knocking the books over. “Oops.” He shrugged with a smile.
James flipped the book over to show Sirius the spine. It was a quidditch annual talking of all the best plays.
“I read for fun when it’s quidditch.” He replied with a shrug.
“But flirting with bookworms, now that’s a fun challenge.” James watched as his friend made a mess and his foot flicked out to kick Sirius deftly.
“Yes, they grow back, but it’s rather traumatic experience for an eleven year old, don’t you think?” Making a face back at his mimicking, it took all Lily had to not resort to stomping her foot in her frustration.
“But why does it need livening up in the corridor? Why couldn’t it be outside? Where a spark won’t bounce of a wall and onto someone’s face.”
“Honestly, I did them a favour. Did you see the size of those eyebrows? Someone was bound to do the same sometime soon.” James shrugged, before crossing his arms.
“You always have to ruin the fun, don’t you?” He quipped, raising an eyebrow.
“And anyway, how’s it any of your business?”
“You’re the reason that first year is blubbering about to Madam Pomfrey?” Lily crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. “Honestly James, if you absolutely have to blow something up, can’t it at least be outside? Someone could have gotten seriously hurt.”
“Oh come on, it was just a singed eyebrow or two, they can cope with that! Eyebrows grow back!” James replied, rolling his eyes at Lily Evans, before raising an eyebrow at her crossed arms.
“Someone could have gotten seriously hurt.” He mimicked her, making a face.
“The school needs livening up, and I’m the only one offering to do it.”
Andromeda rolled her eyes, but passed him the quill regardless. “If that was all you wanted, you could have reached around and got it yourself, James.” She sighed shaking her head. “Why are you so huffy?” she asked.
“Thought I’d make you move.” He smiled sickeningly.
“I know you are but what am I?” James gave the ever childish response, challenging her to rise.
“I still have to give you detention,” Augustus replied coolly. It didn’t matter what was happening between them, it was clear who had set off the firework…. And if Augustus didn’t handle it, someone else would.
“Two days,” he said, watching James. “It should be more, but.. two days. With Slughorn.” Finally, he sighed, shaking his head. “So why the fireworks display? If you wanted my attention, there are easier ways to get it.”
“Bloody hell, lighten up.” James moaned, frowning at Augustus. Nope, he wasn’t going easy, and that was frustrating. But, even so, a little detention was nothing to James.
“Ol’ sluggy? Ah that’s fine, I can clean a few cauldrons, no problem.” He quipped, with a shrug of his shoulders.
“Why would I need to try and get your attention? I always have it.”
He’d doubted for a moment that James would be happy to see him but was quickly proved wrong. He relaxed a little as he got comfy on the sofa. “I was going to offer you some lemon tart slices but I ate them all on the way here.” He didn’t have a particular topic in mind so went with something lighthearted. He looked at the table. “What are you doing? Homework?”
“Course you did.” James rolled his eyes and nudged him a little. He was glad that they fell back into an easy rhythm without much hassle for either of them.
“No, some of us can read Sirius, you know, a..b..c, and we like to do it for fun.” He stuck his tongue out, a quick grin finding his lips.
She wanted to protest but she was feeling too lazy to. Instead, she shuffled over as much as she could to give him room before nuzzling into his side. “Y’know what they say, sharing is caring.”
“Don’t taunt me. I blame you entirely for the fact that I can’t feel my right arm right now,” she replied, sticking her tongue out at him childishly.
“Yeah, I remember mum tried to persuade me that was the saying, but when I took your broom, you seemed to be less than pleased.” He gave her a teasing grin.
“You don’t need it, it’s fine.”

“Honestly you’d think the world had ended, the way everyone is acting.” James rolled his eyes, making an over exaggerated arm waving movement.
“It was only one, incredibly minute firework, and no one was injured...apart from the eyebrows on that one first year, and that third years robe. Agrippa, calm down all of you.”
“Hold on… Give me two seconds. Two seconds, I promise.” Andromeda wrote faster, trying to get her thought down before she lost it, and then looked up. “Okay, my attention is all yours.”
“All I wanted was for you to pass me my quill, but now I have your attention, well I feel damn special.” James rolled his eyes.
“I’m not really in the mood to talk now, or ever really.” Bellatrix continued her reading without looking up at the person that invaded her personal space. Realising the person hadn’t left, she slammed her book shut and looked up at the person. “What do you want? ”

“Oh my dear Bella, we all know how anti social you are, you don’t need to continuously remind us of how little anyone wants to be your friend.” James gave his sickliest, sweetest smile.
“I just wanted to let you know that there’s a strange mark on your face, just there.” He pointed with his wand, putting paint on her face.
“Last I checked it’s not a bloody crime to lay here. So just sod off, yeah? It hurts to move so I’m not going anywhere,” Marlene grumbled before simply rolling over.
“You’re in my space.” James nudged her up a little, and crawled into the space with her, slinging an arm around her neck. He cosied up to Marls and pouted at the lack of space.
“Big ol’ lump aren’t you Marls?” He teased gently.
The days since she had returned to Hogwarts had been a blur, with the only prominent memories being of her first evening back. She’d managed to avoid engaging in conversation with anyone, her gaze that little bit more unapproachable than usual any time she was in the vicinity of anyone else. She needed the time to right herself again, and she couldn’t let anyone get in the way of that.
Of course, in a school, people only avoid you for so long, so it was only a matter of time before Ilona knew that someone would approach her.
“How can I help you?”
Really, James had kept himself to himself for as long a time as he could manage, and now that he and Sirius were back to speaking terms it was time for the seventeen year old to go out and cause a little havoc. Twirling the dungbombs in his pocket, James walked along musing upon the perfect place to create a complete mess for Filch to deal with.
“Oh, nothing.” He whistled, innocently.
“Nice day, isn’t it?”
“I’m sorry, you lost me there–” Remus shook his head, resting it on his arms against the table. He was far too tired to be having this conversation. “I apologize, but can you repeat that whole bit please?” The deep circles under his eyes were plenty enough to show that he was not getting enough sleep, at least not the past few nights. He couldn’t quite figure out why, but it was certainly awful.
“Bloody Merlin, Moony.” James replied.
“I’ve said it like five times now and you’re still not getting it.” He nudged his friend, giving him a cheeky grin.
“What...is...the...other...name...for...wolfsbane?” James asked, purposefully slowly.

James and Sirius hadn’t really spoken since their argument. Sirius had been trying to keep it to himself, not wanting to let another person in and have it backfire on him. He missed James though and he didn’t want this distance between them to last. Somewhat reluctantly, he decided to be the ‘bigger man’ and go over and try to make up with James. He figured it would go one of two ways; either they’d act like nothing had happened or they’d talk it over and possibly end up fighting again. It was worth a shot.
“Hey deer.” Sirius greeted, plopping down into a seat next to James and hoping he sounded like his normal self.
Really, it was unusual for the two best friends to fight and therefore James has made a promise to keep it to himself. Though of course people had noticed, when more than one day passed without the two joking and laughing together, others were bound to assume that there was something wrong.
But Sirius was making a move, and James grinned, looking up from his book.
“Mutt!” He slung an arm around Sirius, glad to act as if it was all over. He’d missed Padfoot.
James had tried to kiss Lily? Really? Augustus had so many questions, so many jokes on the tip of his tongue, but he held them back. He had said he would only laugh if it was funny, and this… Well, it wasn’t funny. James looked pretty upset about the situation, and that made it very clear to Augustus that this was not a time for teasing, but instead, probably for support.
Finally he nodded. “Okay…. So was it bad timing? Or misread signals? What’s the context here? Start at the beginning and we’ll figure out what went wrong.”
“Rookwood, I make it a point not to misread signals. And I certainly can read Lily Evans, I know exactly when she’s saying no to me.” James replied, a frown crossing his face.
“I’d rather not talk about it.”
“Anyway, that’s not what you’re here for.”
