The second year

I came back at the start of this year wanting to grow my artistic practice and develop my skills in the medium i felt comfortable in. Now usually you get told to move out and expand your practice to other media, but in the project mostly i want to really refine what i know. Having not been given any real classical training in drawing i feel like it's the most important thing on my plate right now so i don't become the age old..

Primary research

While writing the essay I've found that i can actually contact one of the artists i'm talking about, due to the illustration being quite recent and not exactly super famous despite the skill of said artist.

It's like i'm really studying now, because I've read the books and the articles on one piece, but that's easy because its so famous. With this illustration, there's no articles or books on what he's doing, just the artist...

And i can speak to him, it's the patient zero of artist reference, the best sort of research, I can actually have his opinion and a gaze into his intentions to support my inquiry. To me, that's pretty damn exiting.

To battle such enemies as Daemons, creatures that are not of this realm but formed of sorcery and madness, a Grey Knight must embrace the power of the Warp to battle a Daemon with its own weapons. The Grey Knights hold a unique honour among the chapters of the Adeptus Astartes - in over ten thousand years of service, not a single one of their number has ever defected to Chaos.

Their armour is left unpainted, leaving the silver-grey of the ceramite exposed. This tradition is thought to have originated from their desire to lead lives of absolute purity. Acid-etched into their left gauntlet, as well as tattooed upon the flesh beneath, is the sigil of Malcador the Sigilite[22a]. Upon achieving the rank of Justicar one may display their personal heraldry on a shield on their shoulder. In contrast to this their armour is highly decorated, encrusted with protective symbols and engraved litanies[6].

Practice paragraphs for the essay

In the last few years games have become a much more prevalent part of the average Joe’s life and they are continuing to grow in popularity and diversity.  The technological revolution and evolution of digital culture have brought upon what Charlie Brooker has described as a “renaissance” in the gaming industry and a broadly debated question has arisen, Are games art?

Games combine the Practices of writers, illustrators, animators, filmmakers, architects and designers. Does each of these disciplines not create work that we see as art or at least as artful? By bringing together all these it looks like games should be the pinnacle of artful expression, being interactive and engaging but also mysterious and cryptic. But due to their fairly recent birth and evolution games have only a little pull in artistic culture, which when you consider the first point is baffling.

A lot of work goes into the artistic style and theme of the top tier of games, for example in ‘Journey’ the whole world is designed to resonate with the experience and music, each feature of the character strengthens social aspects and the architecture supports the textless and speechless story. Some argue that games are a waste of time or a simple distraction from more cultured forms of art, but these are opinions that were formed in the early days of video games when “In the 1970’s, video games were so simple as to be almost abstract” (Jesse Schell ‘The art of game design’ 2008) but its easy to see in modern games how artistic form and expression can be the founding aspects of a game.
