There’s this dumb thing I do every year: Coachella unveils its poster, and I write a way-too-long thing about all the little narratives hidden in that lineup, and in the way the poster lays that lineup out. It’s not something you should take too seriously, but I love the way this festival — the biggest of them all in America — gets cold-blooded and mercenary with its font-size discrepancies and its lineup placements. Every year, that poster shows us an of-the-moment music-business pecking order, or at least the music-business pecking order as it’s perceived by the extraordinarily successful festival bookers at Goldenvoice.

Coachella’s lineup also gives us a pretty good idea of what we’re going to see during the entirety of the American 2020 festival season, since most American music festivals are now slight, off-brand versions of Coachella. This year, a bunch of those festival have already unveiled lineups. But Coachella remains the big dog, the ruler by which all others are measured. Nobody cares about the font sizes in the Shaky Knees or Hangout posters. Coachella still matters.

This year’s lineup is out now. So let’s get into this year’s stories.

7. BIGBANG! The coolest thing about this year’s lineup might be the inclusion of K-pop overlords BIGBANG. You could make the argument that the group is the most important boy band of the last decade, though One Direction might have something to say about that. (Calling it now: The reunited One Direction will headline Coachella 2027, and it will be lit. We will dance all night to the best song ever.) Coachella got BLACKPINK to play last year, and this one is a bigger, cooler deal than that.

BIGBANG made a lot of extremely catchy music and a lot of wild, vivid music videos during the mid-’00s. Then they went on hiatus so that the members of the group could serve their compulsory South Korean military service. They’ve finished that, and now they’re back. K-pop moves fast, so it could be tough for a group even as big as BIGBANG to come back. But leader G-Dragon is a maximal pop futurist of the highest order, and he knows the power of a big stage.

[010320] BIGBANG Begins Their Activities→To Perform at Coachella, “First Official Performance After Being Discharged from Military Service”

[동아닷컴=홍세영 기자] BIGBANG was confirmed to perform at ‘Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival’, which is the largest music festival in the United States. It will be the group’s first official performance since the members were discharged from the military, which matches their ‘world-class’ level.

On January 3, YG Entertainment revealed, “BIGBANG(G-DRAGON·TAEYANG·T.O.P·DAESUNG) was invited to perform at ‘Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival’, being held in Indio, California from April 10th until the 19th”.

Coachella also announced this year’s lineup through its official social media account on the same day. According to the lineup poster, YG’s representative group BIGBANG will perform on April 10th and on the 17th. BIGBANG will perform on two Friday nights, which are the highlights of the festival, and receive the attention of global music fans.

Global artists have been included in the lineup along with BIGBANG. The group will perform at the festival along with artists such as Rage Against The Machine, Travis Scott, Frank Ocean, Calvin Harris, and Lana Del Rey. One can realize BIGBANG’s global popularity and influence despite their recent vacancy.

Coachella began in 1999 and has continued its tradition while remaining prestige. 200~300 thousand audiences participate in the festival every year. It is known as the ‘dream stage’ for numerous artists since they invite artists with not only popularity but also musicality. Celebrities and Hollywood stars often visit the event as the audience. It is also a festival to interchange the overall cultural trends of not just music but also fashion and lifestyle.

Numerous records set by Coachella proves the festival’s dominant presence. Coachella has won the Top Festival Award 7 times at Billboard’s Touring Awards, currently known as the Billboard Live Awards, since back in 2011.

As a result, global music fans pay keen attention to Coachella’s lineup announcement every year. Global artists such as Radiohead, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Eminem, Ariana Grande, and Kanye West have previously performed at the festival to raise its presence.
