How to Grow Out a Bad Haircut
It happens to everyone. You get out of the stylist's chair completely unhappy. Color can always be fixed, but what do you do if you're given a terrible haircut? In the beginning of October, I had my hair cut by a very famous stylist at a hair show. I was told prior to sitting down that he wasn't going to take off much length, and he would basically trim up what I already had into something better. This is not what happened. I left with an EXTREMELY short, EXTREMELY uneven and EXTREMELY embarrassing haircut. So I got to thinking...how long DOES it take to grow out your hair? I will be chronicling my journey to grow my hair out long again, and sharing my experiences and tips along the way.
Here's my hair the day of and the day after that fateful cut (and I can't believe I'm actually sharing these):
First things first: as much as it pained me to do so, I had my hair trimmed again by another stylist at my salon to even it out a little and remove some of the choppiness. Even though scissors at your head again may be the last thing you want after a hackjob, its the best thing to do before you let it grow. You're stuck with it, so you need to have something that at least looks like you cut it that way intentionally, and not like it was a mistake.
Next: figure out how to style it. This may take some trial and error...experiment with products, styling tools and styles to see what works. Change up the part, the bangs, and the direction you style it in. Blow it forward, back, left right, upside down....every which way until you get it right.
After a new cut and a good blowout:
Next: color. Make sure your color is fresh. Touch up the roots, highlight, darken, or lighten...whatever makes you happy, just make sure you keep up with it. Nothing makes a bad haircut look worse than bad or neglected haircolor.
And now, let it be. Here is my hair approximately one month later:
(and, there i go, breaking my rule about neglected color with my faded out red/violet lowlights...I have since colored my hair). So one month later...its fuller, my cowlick (cursed cowlick...it was never a problem until now!) is finally laying down, and my hair is touching the tops of my ears. I've also discovered that my hairline at the nape is also one, big cowlick that grows straight out and off to one side. I paste it down with my hand as I blow dry to tame it. This is the only part of my hair I plan to trim as it starts to get long and mullet-like. Resist the urge to trim any parts of your hair until absolutely necessary. I added some purple lowlights to my hair, only to discover that it would fade out too quickly...with my hair this short, I find it easier to wash it every day instead of restyling it inbetween shampoos. Turns out that when I wake up, i look a little like Sid Vicious (and not in an awesome way), and its easier to just wash and blow again than to try to fix it.
So, with trial and error, I'm figuring out the best way to manage my hair as it is now. As always, vitamins, fluids and a healthy diet are all key to hair growth.
