* * * **
The body is a place of violence. Wolf teeth, amputated hands. Cover yourself with a cloak of leaves, a coat of a thousand furs, a paper dress. The dark forest has a code. The witch sometimes dispenses advice, sometimes eats you for dinner, sometimes turns your brother to stone… — Introduction to The Body in Fairytales by Jeannine Hall Gailey

22-acre Southern Island, off the coast of Maine, was purchased in 1978 by Wyeth’s mother, Betsy, complete with the Tenants Harbor Lighthouse. She and her husband, Andrew Wyeth, summered on Southern Island from 1978-1990. Having bought two more islands in 1979 (450-acre Allen Island and the much smaller Benner Island), in 1990 the Wyeths passed ownership on to their son Jamie with whom it remains.
The lighthouse is one of only 15 privately-owned lighthouses in Maine. Built in 1857, it was renovated by Betsy Wyeth. There is no working light, the lighthouse having been decommissioned in 1934, replaced by a lighted bell buoy offshore.
Rosa rugosa, the beach rose, is a native of eastern Asia and well-suited to growing on sand dunes.

"I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow; but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing."
